Chapter 16 Help

Her favorite toy had a small nightlight on it. She turned it on and, by the moonlight, slowly moved to the edge of the cliff: "I have some food here, do you want some?"

"want!"

He had been hungry all day.

Xiang Jin raised the nightlight a bit, trying to illuminate the boy's position, and threw the already hardened corn cake next to him.

The boy wolfed down his food, then suddenly asked halfway through, "You gave it to me, do you have any left?"

Xiang Jin was stunned; this was the last one he had received.

If her mother hadn't come looking for her, that might have been her last food source.

“Eat it, you need the strength to live. I’ve been abandoned by my family, it doesn’t matter whether I live or die.” She didn’t understand why, even though they were both her mother’s daughters, Xiangqi got the best, while she only deserved to wear the tattered dress that Xiangqi had worn.

It's their birthday today, but none of them remember; while Xiangqi's birthday is celebrated with a grand party and lots of delicious food.

"Don't be afraid, there will always be someone who will be good to you." The boy sensed her frustration and began to comfort her.

"Will anyone love me?" She felt as if she didn't deserve any good things; those belonged to Xiangqi.

Yes, it will!

"When I grow up, I'll marry you, okay?" The boy's voice changed, filled with unwavering determination: "I'll be good to you, okay!"

Xiang Jin was stunned.

Someone was willing to marry her and treat her well... This was the first time she had ever heard of such a thing.

A childhood joke turned into a vow, and she inadvertently took it seriously: "Okay!"

………………

In her memory, they talked a lot that night, but Xiang Jin couldn't remember what they said later, only the vow.

I remember the firmness in his words.

She later drifted off to sleep, and when she woke up, she was in the hospital. Jiang Anqing found her that very night and carried her back home, where she was feverish and unconscious. Meanwhile, Li Shuhui and Xiang Deming were already fast asleep in the hotel.

Xiang Jin remembered the boy in the cave. Taking advantage of the fact that no one was paying attention, she pulled out the water pipe and ran back to the cliff pit based on her memory, but there was no one there anymore.

The boy was rescued.

The pit was a mess, with many footprints erasing the original traces. As Xiang Jin was about to leave, he saw the writing left on the wall.

The handwriting was elegant, like someone who wasn't bound by reality. The name "Murong Xiao" was written densely on it.

Later, Xiang Jin was admitted to Huadu No.1 Middle School.

The name of the top student in Class 6 of Grade 12 at Huadu No. 1 Middle School is Murong Xiao.

……………………

Before she knew it, Xiang Jin had been working for half a month.

For the past two weeks, she has been working from dawn till dusk, extremely busy, but she has basically figured out the warehouse work and is now more adept at it.

"I've never seen a girl like you, so hardworking." After a long day of work, Sister Ding sat on the ground, exhausted, but Xiang Jin picked up a broom and began cleaning the warehouse.

“I’m not tired,” Xiang Jin gestured.

"How could that be?" Sister Ding wiped the sweat from her forehead with a tissue. "Even if you were made of iron, you couldn't avoid getting tired. Xiangjin, don't push yourself too hard."

Xiang Jin smiled gratefully and said nothing.

"Sigh, if only we had her life, we wouldn't have to work so hard here." Sister Ding looked at the TV, which was broadcasting the grand occasion of the 38th Jewelry Art Festival. Under the spotlight, a girl from China stood on the stage.

She wore a veil, deliberately obscuring part of her face, but Xiang Jin still recognized her; it was Xiang Qi.

Xiang Qi won the silver award with a jewelry design that embodies the concept of "idealism." Holding the trophy, wearing a beige evening gown, she stood on the stage under the spotlight, receiving praise from all over the world.

So luxurious, so unparalleled.

"Yes." I wish I had that kind of life.

Xiang Jin gestured casually and continued sweeping.

If I hadn't given up my spot at Columbia University, hadn't gone to jail, hadn't been forced into a marriage of convenience... right now, I might be the one standing in the spotlight.

Such was her fate; how could she not hate it?

After finishing her work, Sister Ding went home, where her children and elderly relatives were waiting for her to cook. Xiang Jin thought it was still early and Feng Jianian should not have finished get off work yet, so she planned to finish cleaning before going home to cook.

Just then, the public telephone in the warehouse rang.

Xiang Jin panicked and quickly answered the phone. The other end immediately started rattling off, "Sister Ding, are you still at the company? I forgot to deliver an urgent package today, and the client is urging me like crazy. I can't leave here. Can you deliver it for me?"

It was Liu Peng, a courier. Apparently, his wife was about to give birth, so it must have been a very urgent situation for him.

Just as Xiang Jin was thinking about how to answer, the other end of the line shouted anxiously again: "Sister Ding, please help me, I beg you, I'll treat you to dinner when I come back another day."

"Knock knock knock—" Xiang Jin quickly knocked on the table a few times.

The person on the other end was stunned for a moment before reacting: "It's Xiang Jin?"

Xiang Jin knocked twice more to indicate his response.

"Xiangjin, could you please deliver this to me? It's on the 12th floor of Yunhong Building. Please, please, if you can't deliver it before 8 o'clock, I'm going to get a complaint."

Xiang Jin was a little anxious. She wanted to help, but her driver's license had been revoked, so she couldn't ride a bike!

If President Yu finds out, she'll lose her job!

"Xiang Jin, you can't even help with this little thing? We've always spoken highly of you in front of President Yu. You know how hard it is for us to earn this money. If our wages are docked, I..."

Xiang Jin hung up the phone and sent a text message: "Recipient's contact information."

After sending the packages, she grabbed the parcels, hopped on the warehouse motorcycle, and sped off towards the Yunhong Building.

At 7:50, she arrived downstairs and, while running towards the elevator, typed a text message to the recipient, asking him to prepare to sign for the package.

The elevator had stopped working for some reason and would not be running again for another ten minutes. Xiang Jin held her breath and climbed up to the 12th floor, sweating profusely, and arrived at the door at 7:58.

But there was no one at the company entrance, and pressing the access control button had no effect.

The company doors didn't open until after 8:10.

"A delivery person?" A stylishly dressed woman walked in, glanced at Xiang Jin with disdain, and then froze.

"Xiang Jin?" the woman exclaimed in disbelief.

Xiang Jin stood frozen in place, at a loss for what to do. He never expected that he would run into his college classmate, Lin Miaomiao, while delivering a package.

"Xiang Jin, are you... delivering a package?" Lin Miaomiao was extremely surprised.

Xiang Jin pursed her lips tightly, her face pale with nervousness and embarrassment.

After a long, long time, she finally took out a pen and paper and wrote: "I'm sorry, my colleague had something to do today and couldn't deliver it earlier, but I delivered it before 8 o'clock. It's just that you didn't come out to check it, so... please don't complain about him."
