Chapter 35 Birthday

Xiang Jin was cornered; she had nowhere left to retreat.

She knew he was just joking; he could have any woman he wanted, so why would he be interested in her? But those words shamefully made her heart race and she couldn't even control her breathing.

As the two drew closer, a cool, masculine scent enveloped them. Xiang Jin trembled, and with a clatter, the paper and pen fell to the ground.

The crisp sound cleared her mind considerably.

She bent down to pick up the pen and paper, steadying her trembling hands: "I'm sorry, I refuse."

"Why?" he asked, his expression deep and thoughtful.

"I'm married and have no intention of betraying my husband. As for the money I owe you for your medicine, I'll raise it for you as soon as possible. Thank you." She quickly finished writing and turned to walk towards the door.

This place is too dangerous; she has to leave!

"stop!"

An angry voice came from behind. Xiang Jin didn't care anymore. She went down the elevator she came from and went straight to the basement. She headed towards where Guan Ming had parked his car.

"What's wrong?" Guan Ming asked with concern when he saw that she was panting from running.

Xiang Jin shook her head: "Let's go quickly."

She gestured.

"Okay." Guan Ming opened the passenger door for her before getting into the car himself and driving away.

Murong Xiao witnessed the entire process from the elevator entrance not far away.

He watched the departing Chevrolet, his expression dark with anger, his fists clenched tightly.

"Boss, should we go after them...?"

"Who is that man?" Murong Xiao asked.

Su Ming, who arrived later, saw nothing and was completely bewildered. A man? Where did this man come from? Wasn't he here to pursue his wife? How did he turn into a man?

"never mind."

He gave a cold laugh and started to turn back.

That woman... he doesn't care at all!

……………………

Guan Ming delivered Xiang Jin to Fengjia Village.

"Thank you," she said in sign language.

"Xiang Jin, you don't need to be so polite." Guan Ming hesitated for a moment, then finally spoke, "I'm always here whenever you need me."

His ears were a little red.

"I'm sorry, I'm already married." Xiang Jin looked at him.

Guan Ming paused for a moment, then laughed: "If you're unwilling, that's fine too. You don't need to make up this excuse. Besides, I'm not the kind of person who gives up halfway."

Before Xiang Jin could reply, he had already started the car and headed towards the city.

………………

Xiang Jin didn't sleep well that night.

After thinking about it all night, I still couldn't figure out how to raise 100,000 yuan. The next day at work, I was completely distracted.

At noon, she returned the 1,000 yuan to Guan Ming and went outside to send a message to Bai Ningshuang: "Shuangshuang, do you have any part-time jobs you can recommend, preferably after get off work or on weekends?"

Bai Ningshuang quickly replied to the message: "Ajin, are you short of money? Did something happen? How much do you need? I'll transfer it to you."

"No, it's just that I want to earn more money." She didn't want her to worry.

"Are you sure everything's alright?"

"Don't worry, it's really nothing."

Just before leaving get off work, Sister Ding suddenly called out to Xiang Jin: "I saw you paying back Guan Ming at noon. What's wrong? Did something happen?"

Xiang Jin shook his head: "It's okay, I'll figure it out myself."

Although she has no clue at the moment, she believes there must be a way to solve it.

“If you’re short a thousand or so yuan, I can lend it to you, but I can’t come up with more than that. You know, we have children and elderly people at home, and expenses are high.” Sister Ding also comes from the countryside and doesn’t have much education. To settle down in the city, she has to work harder than others.

“I understand, thank you, Sister Ding,” Xiang Jin wrote.

……………………

When I got home that evening, Bai Ningshuang was already sitting at the door.

Xiang Jin was pleasantly surprised and quickly ran over.

"Ah Jin, is something wrong?" She took out a card from her bag. "There's 200,000 here. I don't know if it's enough. Take it and spend it."

Xiang Jin was startled and quickly pushed the card back, indicating that she didn't need it.

"If you treat me like a stranger, I'll get angry." Bai Ningshuang's face immediately darkened as she said she was angry.

Xiang Jin chuckled, "You're not shy at all, you really have everything you need." She gestured.

"real?"

"real."

After testing her several times to make sure she was alright, Bai Ningshuang finally smiled with relief. She said, "Wait for me," and ran to the car, then brought out a cake: "Ajin, happy birthday."

Xiang Jin was stunned.

Birthday.

Oh right, tomorrow is Qingming Festival, so today... is her birthday.

She's completely forgotten.

"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and make a wish and blow out the candles!" Seeing Xiang Jin's adorable appearance, Bai Ning Shuang laughed so hard her shoulders shook.

Seeing her smile, Xiang Jin's melancholy vanished instantly. She made a wish on the cake, blew out the candles, and felt a slight lump in her throat.

"Shuangshuang, thank you." Only she remembered her birthday.

"Oh, don't be so polite with me, you're my Xiang Jin." Bai Ningshuang's smile was extremely bright.

The two were eating cake in the house. "Why don't you send your husband a message and ask him to come back and eat cake? Look at all this, we can't finish it both of us."

Xiang Jin thought for a moment and nodded, but there was still no reply from the other end.

"That's so unfair! He doesn't even reply to your messages. Does he not care about you at all? How could he do this?" Bai Ningshuang started to get upset again.

“He’s been working overtime for almost a month now, something must have been holding him back,” Xiang Jin explained.

"Okay, but there's so much cake left, what are we going to do with it?" Bai Ningshuang had originally wanted to take this opportunity to test Feng Jianian's character, but it seems she won't have the chance.

"Why don't we send it to the slums?" Sharing it with Grandpa Liu would be better than wasting it.

Without hesitation, Bai Ningshuang drove the car, while Xiang Jin carried the cake, and the two headed towards the slums.

Grandpa Liu just got home.

He gathered the junk he had received that day into a pile and looked at the two of them with a kind expression.

"So today is Ajin's birthday..." Grandpa Liu sighed. "If my grandson were still alive, today would also be his twenty-sixth birthday."

Grandpa Liu's grandson was swept away by a flood. His son and daughter-in-law tried desperately to save him, but they both ended up drowning. The bodies of the family of three have never been found.

His wife couldn't bear the blow and passed away, leaving Grandpa Liu all alone. Living in the countryside was too lonely, so he came to the city.

"Life is truly unfortunate in its own way," Bai Ningshuang sighed.

For a moment, everyone fell silent.

After finishing the cake, the two prepared to go home.

As soon as I stepped outside, I saw a group of people walking towards the shed under the overpass. There were about ten of them, all men, and their clothes had the logo of the Urban Management Bureau.

"Who is Liu Guangyao to you?" asked the bespectacled man who was in the lead.

Liu Guangyao is Grandpa Liu's full name.
