Chapter Five: The Unscrupulous Merchant

Thomason's fierce face scrunched up.

"That's right, you know we make a living from illegal trade here."

"But once you become a duke of the Cold Emerald Duchy, you must abide by the ducal laws..."

"Otherwise, that duke will have us all beheaded."

"But we don't know how to do anything other than illegal businesses!"

Li Aili: "..."

Why do you speak so confidently about this?

Thomason said quietly, "Do you think he's already forgotten about this 'garbage dump' since he divorced you?"

"I'm leading my brothers back to our old ways. What if one day we're all put on the guillotine and beheaded one by one?"

The kettle on the stove boiled, and the spout made a whistling "whoosh" sound.

Thomason picked up the kettle and poured a bowl of hot water for everyone.

The simple house felt cramped, with more than a dozen tall knights crammed inside.

"My apologies, esteemed knights, we are too poor to offer tea, only hot water."

If you brought your own tea, put it in the water while it's still hot.

He even pushed his cup of hot water towards the knight.

Don't make your purpose too obvious.

Knights: "..."

Even those of them who had worked in the royal stables were seeing such...shameless scoundrels for the first time.

Li Ai Li was used to it. "Edward, there's some tea in the carriage."

Edward immediately strode out.

Li Aili said to Thomason, "If nothing unexpected happens, this place will soon become my territory."

Thomason's expression went blank, and even the bubble above his head went blank with surprise.

Li Aili changed the subject, "But let's not do those kinds of 'black streets' anymore."

Thomason snapped out of his daze. "Ellie, are you kidding me?"

"I'm serious."

Thomason: "..." [Damn it, I want a divorce too!]

Li Aili: "..."

Edward brought in the tea leaves.

Thomason had no time to think about the knights' tea anymore. "Ah! So we'll be your subjects from now on?"

Li Aili: "..." Thinking about it that way, it's true.

Thomason instantly 'came to life', "Hey! I could tell when you first came here!"

You're good at making money!

Hey! Working for you, we brothers make money much faster than murder and arson!

"So, what kind of business will we be doing from now on?"

Li Aili: "..."

Li Aili took a deep breath, reaching for the parchment, but her hand touched only her ring finger, finding nothing...

Li Aili pinched the bridge of her nose. "Speaking of which, the most urgent thing right now is to solve the problem of food here."

Campbell is a dark street, inhabited by outlaws with criminal records thicker than walls.

They don't do normal work, they don't farm, they live a life of constant risk and danger just to earn a living.

For Campbellians, looting and plundering are nothing new.

Unfortunately, they were still in the 'passage' where the various parties were meeting.

The merchants' guild was robbed by them many times, which eventually led to the merchants joining forces to drive up the price of Campbell's food.

Elsewhere, a loaf of black bread costs at most two or three copper coins.

But for the Campbellians, a loaf of black bread costs fifty silver coins, no bargaining.

As for personal shoppers, forget about it; nobody wants to be friends with a "rat in the gutter."

Back when Li Aili first arrived in Campbell, she only managed to get a foothold by doing "bread purchasing".

Later, she learned the whole story.

So Li Aili said, "Let's not wait any longer, let's do it now."

"Tomasson, call everyone out. I'll give you seeds, and we'll start planting."

Thomason looked bewildered. "What? Farming?"

He looked at Li Aili and felt a pain in his back molars.

“Ellie, although I’ve never farmed before, I know that this stuff is all about the months…”

"It's not like you can plant whenever you want."

"Also, even if we plant them now, it will still take a long time to harvest them..."

Li Aili interrupted him, "Just listen to me, I won't let you go hungry, so go ahead."

Upon hearing this, Thomason immediately went to fetch someone.

Li Ai Li then said to Edward, "Edward, could you make a trip to Tankar?"

"How are the trees they transplanted from the cloud giants doing?"

"If the fruit has already ripened, please bring some back for me."

Edward immediately took care of it.

The other golden knights looked at him with envy.

Li Aili then said to the knights, "Alright, I have something important to do, so please guard the gate for me."

"Do not let anyone in without my permission."

The golden knights immediately perked up, "Yes, madam!"

Li Aili saw this and understood that there was still a lingering resentment between them.

But now is not the time to dwell on that. After the knights went out to guard the gate, Li Aili immediately summoned the door of the alchemy room.

Enter the alchemy room.

Today just happens to be the day the stroller arrived.

It's hard to go from luxury to frugality. Having gotten used to the spatial ring, she's been incredibly annoyed these past few days without it.

After opening the delivery slip for the small truck, Li Aili quickly searched through it and finally found the spatial ring.

Li Aili was stunned the moment she saw the product description.

It was a pair of wedding rings, exactly the same style as the one the Duke had given her.

The design is simple and elegant, inlaid with beautiful gemstones, one red and one green.

However, the ring the Duke gave her was a somewhat old-fashioned green gemstone ring.
