In a brightly lit mansion in the inner city, manager Clay is busy preparing for the birth of his third child.
"You're so lazy, can't you even slow down?"
A few minutes later, Jelli lay on Clay's fat belly, her face full of lingering pleasure.
Clay, however, embraced his wife and began talking about another man.
He couldn't help but laugh and said, "It's past midnight, everything is normal in White Dove City. That Mr. Glorious Adventurer should have nothing to say now, right?"
"Hmph, why talk about him? Clay, let's do it again, I'm still full of energy."
Jieli's gaze was intense.
When Clay's legs went weak and he was caught in a dilemma, a mournful horn sounded outside the window, saving him.
"What's going on? Citywide alert?"
Jellie wondered, "When was the last time the whole city was on alert?"
“Anyway, I haven’t experienced it.” Clay opened the window and looked outside.
The magic lamp atop the clock tower in the city center turned a blinding red.
The light flashed, accompanied by a sharp horn blare.
"I'm Kami, a reporter from the White Dove Morning Post—to repeat, I'm Kami, a reporter from the White Dove Morning Post..."
"You bastard, stop showing off your name at a time like this!"
An angry male voice blared from the loudspeaker, echoing throughout the city.
Seemingly having snatched the microphone from Kami, the man said seriously:
"Adventurers of White Dove City, I have some terrible news to announce. All adventurers of level 10 and above, please grab your weapons and assemble north of White Dove City. A bloody battle for survival is about to begin."
"What on earth is going on?"
Clay scratched his head in confusion, thinking it had nothing to do with him. He closed the window, preparing to go back to rest, when...
A heavy male voice boomed from the magical loudspeaker: "A monster tide has erupted on the Qingfeng Riverbank!"
The moment the words left his mouth, Clay and his wife Jerry both stopped in their tracks, their hearts skipping a beat.
The two looked at each other, their faces filled with disbelief.
The monster tide... has really erupted!?
Late at night, in the inner city's Adventurers' Guild.
"Um, Lord Velen, it seems there's been a monster tide at the Breeze Riverbank..."
In front of a magic mirror used for remote communication, Clay kept wiping the fine beads of sweat that appeared on his fat face with a handkerchief.
Behind him was his wife, Jellie, who was equally uneasy.
When news of the monster tide broke out, the two of them nearly fainted.
Linda requested to meet with the chairman twice, but they suppressed her requests both times. The couple is largely to blame for this.
If exposed, the lightest consequence would be that the Clays would be dismissed from their jobs.
In slightly more serious cases, they will be taken to court and face a severe trial!
Using this magic mirror is quite expensive; depending on the distance, it costs at least several hundred thousand gold coins per use.
Clay had kept the news a secret because he was worried about the cost of the Magic Mirror and the guild master's punishment.
Today, the distance between the president and White Dove City is even greater, and the use of the Magic Mirror once will cost at least a million gold.
But in order to mitigate his punishment, Clay had to contact President Velen immediately, even if it meant bearing the entire cost of the gold coins himself!
"What? It 'seems' that an outbreak has occurred? Clay, explain yourself clearly, is there a monster tide or not!"
A middle-aged man with strong facial features was reflected in a circular magic mirror with a radius of 20 centimeters.
President Viren, with a square face, short blond hair, and a thick, bushy beard, said with a furious expression:
"You're describing a monster tide as 'seems'? Clay, does it actually happen?!"
"Uh...yes, yes! And they'll be at the gates of White Dove City in no more than a day."
Clay forced a smile that looked more like a grimace, his forehead dripping with sweat that soaked his handkerchief.
"Go and inform Mayor Adel that I will return as soon as possible! Listen carefully, you must stop the monster tide ten kilometers away from White Dove City, and you absolutely cannot allow the city walls to be damaged! Otherwise, you, me... and everyone in management will go to jail!"
Viren roared as he threw on his trench coat.
"yes...!"
Before Clay and Jerry could even catch their breath, a staff member banged on the door and shouted:
"Sir, news has come from the city hall that Mayor Adel will be arriving soon and will take command of the Adventurers' Guild!"
Hiss—
Clay and the other man both shivered simultaneously.
Adel knew about Linda's situation.
When this guilt is handed down, the first to suffer will be this couple.
The two went downstairs with trepidation.
Most of the union members were gathered in the hall, waiting for Mayor Adel's instructions.
When everyone saw the Clay couple looking like wilted eggplants, they couldn't help but wonder, "So this couple are such responsible people?"
When a monster tide breaks out, the people who should be most worried are the higher-ups and the adventurers. These people working behind the scenes are the safest.
When asked by his colleagues, Clay couldn't even manage a forced smile.
The couple walked forward tremblingly, like condemned prisoners about to be executed.
While everyone else was thinking about how to manage the adventurers, the Clays were completely blank-minded, thinking only about how to plead with the mayor.
A short while later, a carriage from the city hall arrived at the union's gate.
More than a dozen vehicles followed closely behind.
Two people stepped out of the lead carriage, which bore the emblem of White Dove City.
One of them was Mayor Adel.
The old man had a solemn expression, leaned on his cane, and exuded an aura of authority that commanded respect without anger.
