Chapter 59 Defense System Planning
Lin Che looked at the floor plan of the shopping center drawn by Lu Zhao, thinking about how to make better use of this rare safe area.
Inside the coffee shop, four people sat together, with various sketches and notes spread out on the table.
Su Wanqing leaned back in her chair and looked around the space that would soon become their new home.
"I have an idea," Su Wanqing suddenly sat up straight, "We can build a three-layer defense system."
The other three turned to her, waiting for her to continue her explanation.
"The first floor is set up as a trap area, the second floor is our living area, and the third floor is converted into an observation post."
Su Wanqing pointed to the floor plan drawn by Lu Zhao and said, "This way, even if the first floor is breached, we still have the second floor as a buffer."
Lu Zhao pushed his glasses and said, "It's a reasonable design. We can indeed set up some traps on the first floor and make use of the existing structure."
“Like those revolving doors and escalators?” Lin Che asked.
"That's right," Lu Zhao drew a few marks on the map, "The revolving door can be transformed into a one-way entrance, so that the zombies can't get out after entering. Although the escalator is not running, it can be turned into a trap to trap the zombies in the middle."
Xiao Ran nodded in agreement: "At the same time, we need to set up a quick evacuation passage at each emergency exit in case of emergency."
“Regarding the second floor,” Su Wanqing continued, “we can divide it into several functional areas.
The coffee shop serves as the command center, a kitchen and restaurant are set up next to the supermarket, and other shops are remodeled as needed.”
Lin Che pointed to a clothing store on the map and said, "This can be used as a rest area and bedroom."
"The bookstore next door can be our research center," Lu Zhao added, "We need a quiet place to study the materials brought out from the laboratory."
Su Wanqing marked various areas on the map: "Pharmacies can be used as medical stations."
"Regarding the third floor," Xiao Ran said, "we need to set up a 24-hour surveillance post there to observe the surrounding movements."
Su Wanqing touched the jade bracelet on her wrist: "I can buy some high-powered telescopes and surveillance equipment from the system."
"We also need to reinforce all the entrances and windows," Lu Zhao said, "especially the glass doors and windows on the second floor, which are the weakest points."
Su Wanqing nodded: "Let me see what the system has to offer for purchase."
She began to work on the jade bracelet, browsing the list of available items. "Barbed wire, iron plates, nails, electric saws, electric drills... We can buy a whole set of tools."
“Buy it,” Lin Che said, “With these tools, we can transform this place more effectively.”
Su Wanqing placed an order quickly, and a few moments later a large number of tools and building materials appeared in her space.
"Let's get started," Xiao Ran said as he stood up, "Time waits for no one."
The four of them acted separately. Lu Zhao took tools to check the revolving door and escalator on the first floor and began to design traps.
Su Wanqing was responsible for reinforcing the partitions between the shops on the second floor and installing barbed wire for additional protection.
Lin Che and Xiao Ran went to the third floor to set up an observation post.
A few hours later, the four met again in the coffee shop to report their progress.
"The trap system on the first floor has been preliminarily designed," Lu Zhao said, "I modified the mechanism of the revolving door. Now it can only rotate from the outside to the inside, and anything that comes in can't get out. A tripwire is also set on the escalator. Once triggered, the zombies will be trapped in the middle."
"The partition of the second floor is basically completed," Su Wanqing wiped the sweat from her forehead, "I installed wire mesh doors at each entrance, which can be closed quickly."
"The observation post on the third floor has been built," Xiao Ran reported, "We have set up a temporary platform on the roof, which can see a range of several kilometers around."
"I also found enough bedding and clothes in the clothing store," Lin Che added, "and I have sorted them out and distributed them to the various rest areas."
Su Wanqing nodded with satisfaction: "It's going very smoothly. We need a more detailed plan next."
She took out a new piece of paper from the space and began to draw a more detailed area division: "Command center, living area, medical station, research center, material storage area, training area"
“Training area?” Lin Che asked doubtfully.
Xiao Ran explained: "We need basic self-defense skills. I can teach you some basic self-defense techniques and how to use weapons."
"That's a good idea," Su Wanqing agreed, "We can't always rely on these physical defenses."
"I saw some equipment that can be used for training at the sporting goods store," Xiao Ran said, "I can design a simple training plan."
Lu Zhao nodded: "Make rational use of existing resources. We can also set up a workshop next to the training area to make and repair tools and weapons."
Su Wanqing added these suggestions to the diagram: "In this way, we basically have all the functional areas needed for a small community."
"We should establish a set of rules and regulations," Lu Zhao suggested, "including resource allocation, shift guard, task division, etc."
"I agree," Xiao Ran said, "Order and discipline are more important than anything else. I can be responsible for security planning."
"I don't think we need overly complicated rules at the moment," Su Wanqing said, "but a basic division of labor is indeed necessary."
Lin Che suggested: "Everyone can be responsible for different areas according to their expertise."
The four of them continued to discuss their respective division of labor. Lu Zhao was responsible for design and technical issues, Xiao Ran was in charge of security and training, Lin Che was responsible for medical care and daily life management, and Su Wanqing was responsible for overall planning and resource allocation.
After the discussion, Xiao Ran stood up and said, "I'm going to the sports store to prepare some training equipment."
“I’ll go with you,” Lin Che said, “so we can see if there’s anything useful for the medical station.”
After the two left, Su Wanqing turned to Lu Zhao: "Do you think this plan is feasible?"
Lu Zhao pondered for a moment: "It is feasible in theory, but we need time to implement it.
In the short term, we should first ensure basic defense and survival needs.”

Su Wanqing nodded: "Take it one step at a time."
At the same time, Xiao Ran and Lin Che arrived at the sporting goods store. Xiao Ran began to select various equipment that could be used as weapons - baseball bats, golf clubs, tennis rackets, etc.
"These can all be transformed into effective self-defense tools," Xiao Ran explained, "In the absence of firearms, we need to make use of all possible resources."
Lin Che picked up a tennis racket and tried to swing it a few times: "I never thought that one day I would use this to fight zombies."
Xiao Ran observed Lin Che's movements: "Your wrists are very flexible and your reactions are pretty good. I guess you've played a musical instrument before?"
Lin Che looked at him in surprise: "How do you know? I learned the violin."
"The movement and coordination of your fingers," Xiao Ran explained briefly, "is an advantage. We can train you to use weapons that require precision."
He took a dart and handed it to Lin Che: “Try it.”
Lin Che took the dart, aimed at the billboard on the opposite wall, and threw it.
The dart hit the target accurately.
"Not bad," Xiao Ran nodded, "You have talent."
The two continued to collect training equipment. Xiao Ran found some protective gear - knee pads, elbow pads, gloves, all of which could provide extra protection in battle.
Back at the coffee shop, Su Wanqing and Lu Zhao had completed a detailed defense plan.
"We need to set up an alarm system at the entrance to the first floor," Lu Zhao said, "Any intruder will trigger the alarm and alert us."
Su Wanqing took out some electronic equipment from the space: "This is the motion sensor and alarm I just bought. It can be installed at each entrance."
Xiao Ran and Lin Che put down the equipment they had collected and joined the discussion.
"The training area has been preliminarily planned," Xiao Ran reported, "I plan to start teaching from the basics of combat."
Lin Che showed the equipment they found: "These can all be used as training and defense equipment."
The four continued to refine the plan and determined the work priorities for the next few days: strengthening defenses, organizing supplies, setting up an alarm system, and starting basic training.
"We've accomplished a lot today," Su Wanqing said, "but there's more work to do tomorrow. We should take turns to rest and stay alert."
Xiao Ran arranged the shifts: "I'll be on the first shift, then Lin Che, then Lu Zhao, and finally Su Wanqing. Four hours each."
As night fell, the shopping mall became quiet. The four of them had a simple meal at the coffee shop, which they had brought from the supermarket, and then they prepared to rest.
Xiao Ran took his weapon and went to the observation post on the third floor to begin the first shift of guard.
Before taking a break, Lin Che went to the pharmacy to sort out the medicines and medical supplies there in preparation for possible injuries.
Lu Zhao set up a simple workbench in a corner of the coffee shop and continued to improve the defense design.
Su Wanqing sat by the window, looking at the dark world outside through the observation hole.
She touched the jade bracelet on her wrist and felt a little comforted.
