Chapter 82: Life and Death Factory
Su Wanqing and Lin Che crawled along the drainage pipe with difficulty. The pipe was narrow and damp, and the air was filled with a foul smell.
Lin Che's breathing became more and more rapid, and the gray lines on his arms spread at a speed visible to the naked eye.
“How is it?” Su Wanqing asked in a low voice. She tried not to look at Lin Che’s arm, but the spreading lines still made her feel uneasy.
“I can still hold on.” Lin Che’s voice was a little hoarse. He clenched his teeth and tried hard to control the fluctuations of the supernatural power in his body.
The pipe finally reached the end. Su Wanqing used a flashlight to illuminate the front and found that the exit was blocked by a heavy metal door.
There was a small observation window on the door, and through it she saw an abandoned factory area outside, with collapsed buildings and scattered vehicles everywhere.
"This is the outskirts of the factory." Su Wanqing said, and she began to check the control panel on the metal door.
"Wait." Lin Che suddenly said, "I have an idea."
"What do you think?"
"There must be a large number of zombies outside. If we rush out directly, it will be difficult to avoid them. But we can use sonic equipment to attract the zombies away from here, and then take the opportunity to get out."
Su Wanqing was stunned for a moment. She remembered that Lin Che's ability could control water molecules and produce high-frequency sound waves.
"Are you sure?"
“Let’s give it a try.” Lin Che replied, and took out a small sound wave transmitter from his backpack and began to adjust the frequency.
Su Wanqing nodded. She knew there was no better way than this.
Lin Che activated the sonic transmitter, and a piercing noise instantly spread throughout the entire factory area.
“Successful.” Lin Che said. He saw through the observation window that the zombies that were originally wandering around the periphery of the factory began to be attracted by the sound waves and gathered in the direction of the sound source.
"Let's go!" Su Wanqing decisively opened the metal door, and the two rushed out quickly.
They followed a hidden path, carefully avoiding the zombies, and moved towards the interior of the factory.
Su Wanqing carefully observed the surrounding environment and found that the layout of the buildings outside the factory was a bit strange, as if it had been specially designed.
"Something seems to be wrong here." Su Wanqing said with a frown.
"What's wrong?" Lin Che asked.
"Look, this abandoned convoy is arranged too neatly. Moreover, the tires of these vehicles have been removed, as if they were deliberately damaged."
Lin Che followed Su Wanqing's gaze and nodded.
"You're right, there is something strange here."
Su Wanqing continued to observe the surrounding environment, and she suddenly discovered that there was a hidden wellhead in the deepest part of the convoy.
The well mouth is blocked by some abandoned vehicles and is difficult to be found.
"Found it!" Su Wanqing said excitedly, "This should be the entrance to a tunnel."
“Tunnel?” Lin Che was a little confused. “What kind of tunnel is there here?”
"I don't know, but my intuition tells me that there must be some secret here." Su Wanqing said. She walked to the edge of the well, stuck her head out and looked down carefully.
The well was very deep and dark, and it was impossible to see clearly what was at the bottom.
"Let's go down." Su Wanqing said.
"Be careful." Lin Che reminded.
The two of them slowly descended along the rope on the well wall. The well mouth was very narrow, so they could only descend side by side.
“It’s very quiet here.” Lin Che said. He looked around and found that there was no sound in the tunnel.
"Be careful." Su Wanqing reminded again. She always felt that there was something unusual here.
The tunnel was very long and it took them about ten minutes to reach the bottom.
"We're here." Su Wanqing said. She used a flashlight to illuminate the front and found that they had come to a wide underground passage.
The walls of the passage were lined with wires and pipes, and the air was filled with a pungent chemical smell.
“This is the factory’s underground passage.” Lin Che said, observing the structure of the passage carefully.
"Let's go." Su Wanqing said, and she began to walk forward along the passage.
They walked along the passage for about a few hundred meters and suddenly found a large amount of bloodstains on the ground of the passage.
The bloodstains had dried but were still clearly visible.
"What happened here?" Lin Che asked.
Su Wanqing used a flashlight to illuminate the surrounding environment, and she found some damaged experimental monitoring devices on the walls of the passage.
"It looks like there has been a serious riot and battle here," said Su Wanqing, who had a bad feeling.
They continued walking along the passage and suddenly heard a noisy sound coming from the front.
“Someone’s here!” Su Wanqing whispered, and she motioned for Lin Che to stop.
They cautiously approached the source of the sound and found a heavy metal door at the end of the passage.
There was a small observation window on the door, through which they saw a huge laboratory.
The laboratory is filled with various experimental equipment, and various charts and data are hung on the walls.
Several people in white lab coats were busy working.
"Who are they?" Lin Che asked.
"I don't know." Su Wanqing said, she felt a strong sense of crisis.
At this moment, Su Wanqing suddenly discovered that there was a control console in the corner of the laboratory with a magnetic stripe pass card on it.
"Wait, what is that?" Su Wanqing said, pointing at the console.
Lin Che walked forward and picked up the magnetic stripe pass card.
“Lu Zhao?” Lin Che said in surprise, “Lu Zhao’s name is written on this card.”
"Lu Zhao?" Su Wanqing was also surprised, "He's here?"
Lin Che inserted the magnetic stripe card into the console's reader, and a brief record appeared on the console screen.
"'Lead Final Experiment Plan', a certain department at the top of the base provided resource support for this project." Su Wanqing read the contents on the screen, her face becoming more and more solemn.
“‘Fuse’? What on earth is this?” Lin Che asked.
Su Wanqing shook her head. She didn't know. But she knew that things were far more complicated than they imagined.
They continued to move forward and suddenly found a huge transparent container deep in the laboratory.
Inside the container, there is a suspended specific infected body.
The infected body was twice the size of an ordinary zombie. Its skin was a strange purple color and its body was covered with various mutated organs.
The label on the container clearly reads: "First Evolutionary Form, Project Zero".
Su Wanqing and Lin Che took a deep breath at the same time. They realized that they had discovered the real secret of this factory.
Su Wanqing and Lin Che stood in front of the transparent container, staring at the suspended infected body inside.
It was like a twisted sculpture, its purple skin covered with blood vessels and deformed protrusions, as if silently accusing something.
"Project Zero...what is this?" Su Wanqing's voice was very soft, with a slight tremor.
Lin Che did not answer her. He walked to the control console in the laboratory and tried to read more information.
The console screen was badly damaged, but one of the computers still managed to work.
He tapped away at the keyboard, and the screen began to flash with jumbled codes.
“Found it.” Lin Che’s voice suddenly became serious. “This is the detailed data of the ‘first generation evolution’. The virus… the virus is not naturally produced, but artificially designed. This is consistent with the information we found before.”
Su Wanqing walked over to Lin Che and looked at the densely packed text and charts on the screen.
"Layered mutagenesis...what does that mean?"
The latest novel is published first on Liu9shuba!
“They induced mutations in the virus by constantly changing its genetic sequence. Each layer of mutation was more aggressive and contagious than the previous one, and eventually, they created this uncontrollable super-evolved virus,” Lin Che explained, his fingers moving rapidly on the keyboard as he spoke.
"Uncontrollable?" Su Wanqing repeated the word, and a chill surged in her heart.
“The data shows that the purpose of this virus is to screen and strengthen humans. Only those who can resist the virus can survive and become the rulers of the ‘new world’.” Lin Che continued, his face becoming increasingly ugly.
Su Wanqing was silent. She thought of the warning before "Night", the people infected by the virus, and everything she had experienced.
"Is...is this one of the sources of the virus?" Su Wanqing asked, her voice a little hoarse.
"Yes. The data shows that this factory is one of the virus's research and development and production bases, but the real launch order most likely came from the top of the base." Lin Che replied. He stopped what he was doing and looked up at Su Wanqing.
Su Wanqing felt dizzy. She initially thought that the outbreak of the virus was an accident, but now it seems that everything was planned by humans.
"We were used." Su Wanqing murmured to herself, her heart filled with anger and disappointment.
“Be careful!” Lin Che suddenly shouted, and he pulled Su Wanqing to his side.
A dark figure flashed from outside the control room, and a red laser beam hit where they had just been standing, burning a hole through the wall.
"Someone!" Su Wanqing exclaimed, and she quickly looked around, looking for cover.
The dark shadow appeared again. He was wearing a black special uniform and a fully enclosed mask on his face, so his expression could not be seen clearly.
He held a peculiarly shaped rifle in his hand, and the muzzle flashed with a cold light.
"You have broken into here and violated safety regulations. Stop your actions immediately, otherwise you will bear the consequences." The black shadow's voice was processed by a voice changer and sounded emotionless.
"We just want to know the truth." Su Wanqing replied, her voice firm.
“The truth? You are not qualified to know the truth.” The black shadow said coldly. He raised his rifle and aimed at Su Wanqing and Lin Che again.
At this moment, Lin Che's body suddenly trembled, his eyes became empty and lifeless, and a strange smile appeared on his face.
“He’s going to lose control!” Su Wanqing was shocked. She knew that Lin Che’s second personality “Ye” was awakening.
"The enemy's action pattern is singular, they lack reconnaissance, and their retreat route is the tunnel entrance."
The voice of "Ye" came out of Lin Che's mouth, his tone was calm and decisive.
Lin Che suddenly grabbed Su Wanqing's hand and ran towards the tunnel entrance.
Seeing this, the black shadows immediately opened fire, and dense laser beams swept past them rapidly behind them.
"Ye" seemed to know the enemy's movements very well. He led Su Wanqing through the laboratory and avoided all attacks.
"Hurry, we're at the tunnel entrance!" "Ye" said. He pushed open the iron door of the tunnel entrance and pushed Su Wanqing inside.
The black shadow followed closely behind, and he used a long-range weapon to break the fingerprint lock at the entrance of the tunnel, blocking their retreat.
"We are trapped!" Su Wanqing exclaimed, her heart filled with despair.
"There are other ways." "Ye" said, and he quickly scanned the environment in the tunnel, looking for alternative escape routes.
"There is a ventilation duct here. Although it is narrow, it can lead to the outside of the tunnel."
Ye said, pointing to a narrow ventilation duct on the wall of the tunnel.
"Let's get in." Su Wanqing said. She knew there was no better way now.
Lin Che climbed into the ventilation duct without hesitation, and Su Wanqing followed closely behind.
The ventilation duct was so narrow that they could only crawl forward.
"Be careful, there is a turn ahead." Night warned, his voice echoing in the narrow pipe.
Su Wanqing carefully turned the corner and found a metal grid at the end of the ventilation duct.
"How do I open this grid?" Su Wanqing asked.
Night was silent for a moment, then said, "Use your spatial ability to break the grid into pieces."
Su Wanqing nodded, she concentrated her mind and injected spatial power into the metal grid.
The metal grid began to tremble, and then quickly broke into countless pieces, scattered in the tunnel.
"Okay, we can go out." "Ye" said, and he was the first to climb out of the ventilation duct.
Su Wanqing also crawled out, and she found that they had arrived outside the tunnel, in an abandoned warehouse.
"We escaped successfully." Su Wanqing said with a sigh of relief.
"It's not over yet." "Ye" said, his voice suddenly became low, "Not only is the factory laboratory a trap, but even Lu Zhao's mission may not be entirely to save us, but there is another hidden story."
Su Wanqing was stunned. She had always trusted Lu Zhao, but "Ye"'s words made her feel uneasy.
"You...how do you know?" Su Wanqing asked.
"Ye" did not answer, his body began to tremble, and his eyes gradually regained clarity.
"Lin Che?" Su Wanqing asked tentatively.
Lin Che looked at Su Wanqing blankly, with a confused expression on his face.
“I…what happened to me just now?” Lin Che asked, his voice a little weak.
“You…you’re out of control.” Su Wanqing replied. She didn’t dare to tell Lin Che about the existence of “Ye”.
“Out of control? I…I don’t remember anything.” Lin Che shook his head, his face pale.
"Night" fell into hibernation and returned to Lin Che's personality state.
Su Wanqing knew that she had to be more careful. She couldn't let Lin Che know about the existence of "Ye", nor could she let Lu Zhao know about their plan.
