Chapter 115 Secret Intelligence
Xiao Ran left the core area of the survivor base alone. He did not choose to return to the team directly, but went straight to the old site of the black market mentioned by Lao Kui.
Although it has become a ruin, there are still some scattered businessmen active there, walking on the edge of law and morality.
The ruins were filled with the smell of decay and dust. Xiao Ran calmly moved among the shattered walls, looking for a familiar figure - a black market merchant called "Glasses" by Lao Kui. It was said that this man was well-informed and could get anything.
Finally, behind a pile of collapsed concrete slabs, Xiao Ran found the target.
A thin middle-aged man wearing a pair of thick glasses was squatting in front of a shabby table, counting some sundries in his hands.
He was surrounded by a few ragged survivors, who seemed to be bargaining.
This man is “Glasses” Zhao Ming.
Zhao Ming raised his head and saw Xiao Ran coming towards him, a look of vigilance appeared on his face.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?"
"I have something to talk to you about." Xiao Ran's voice was low and hoarse, with an unquestionable majesty.
Zhao Ming hesitated for a moment, and asked the people around him to disperse. "Follow me."
They walked to a relatively secluded corner. Zhao Ming took out a folding chair from under the table and motioned Xiao Ran to sit down.
"I heard that you are well-informed. I want to ask you something about the virus sample." Xiao Ran said straight to the point.
Zhao Ming narrowed his eyes and looked at Xiao Ran. "What do you want to know? Information about virus samples is not something that anyone can know."
"I need to know the source of the virus sample and its relationship to this survivor base." Xiao Ran's attitude was very clear, he would not beat around the bush.
Zhao Ming was silent for a moment, as if he was considering something. He took out a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, and took a deep breath.
“Everyone actually knows what you want to know, but no one dares to say it.
The real source of that virus sample was not a natural mutation, but an abandoned laboratory.
That laboratory is directly related to the forces behind leader Chen Ming."
"Laboratory?" Xiao Ran frowned. "What kind of experiment is it?"
Zhao Ming shook his head. "I don't know the details, I just know that the lab has been conducting some secret research, and the research is very dangerous.
Later, the experiment went out of control, causing the entire laboratory to be destroyed, and all the people... mutated. "
"Mutations?"
"Yes, mutation. Those experimenters were infected by the virus and turned into terrible monsters.
In order to cover up the truth, the laboratory chose to abandon it and transferred some related samples here." Zhao Ming said.
A chill ran down Xiao Ran's heart. He vaguely felt that this survivor base was not as simple as it seemed.
"Is there any connection between the sample generation mechanism and those evolved zombies?" Xiao Ran asked.
Zhao Ming's face turned a little ugly. "This... I'm not sure. I only know that the generation mechanism of the sample is very complicated, involving multiple fields such as genetic engineering and virology. Those evolved zombies seem to be affected by the sample to some extent. But I can't explain the specific principle."
Xiao Ran could sense that Zhao Ming was hiding something. "If you know anything else, you'd better tell me."
Zhao Ming sighed. "I've told you everything I can tell you. I don't know any more details. And even if I knew, I wouldn't dare tell you. This matter is too sensitive, and there are too many people involved."
Xiao Ran knew that it was useless to ask further questions. He took out a stack of banknotes from his pocket and placed it on the table.
"This is for you. I hope you can keep an eye out for me. If there is any new information in the future, you can come to Lao Kui to find me."
Zhao Ming took the money and showed a grateful expression on his face. "Don't worry, I will."
"There's one more thing." Xiao Ran added. "Is there a map that can lead me to a hidden area deep inside the base?"
Zhao Ming hesitated for a moment, took out a crumpled map from an iron box and handed it to Xiao Ran.
"I got this map from a dead man. It is said that it can lead you to more hidden spaces deep inside the base. However, I don't know what is in the places marked on the map."
Xiao Ran took the map and looked at it carefully. The map showed the locations of some secret passages and hidden warehouses, which seemed to be the entrance to a secret network.
"Thank you." Xiao Ran stood up and prepared to leave.
"Be careful." Zhao Ming warned. "This base is deep in water."
Xiao Ran nodded, said nothing more, turned around and left the black market site.
At the same time, Su Wanqing and Lu Zhao were still in the core area of the survivor base, discussing the retreat plan.
"The situation is not optimistic." Su Wanqing frowned and said, "The zombie activities around the base are becoming more and more frequent. It seems that the time for retreat is no longer optimistic."
Lu Zhao looked at the map in his hand and said, "We can use the space of the jade bracelet to quietly move to other places. This can avoid direct conflict and reduce casualties."
"That's a good idea." Su Wanqing nodded. "But we can't take everyone away. After all, the space in the jade bracelet is limited."
"We can transfer the core personnel first, and then find a way to deal with the others." Lu Zhao said.
"Okay." Su Wanqing sighed. "Let's do it this way."
Just as they were about to implement their retreat plan, Lin Che's voice suddenly rang out.
"Chief, I sense... danger."
Lin Che's face was pale, and his forehead was covered with beads of sweat. He seemed to be in great pain.
"What's wrong?" Su Wanqing asked.
"I...I smell a conspiracy in the scent."
Lin Che said, "This base hides a huge secret."
Su Wanqing was shocked. She realized that this survivor base might be much more complicated than she thought.
"Lu Zhao, scan the surrounding situation." Su Wanqing ordered.
Lu Zhao immediately activated his special ability and scanned the surroundings.
"We've found something unusual," Lu Zhao said. "Some unknown heat sources have appeared around the base and are approaching quickly."
"Zombies?" Xiao Ran asked.
"No, they're not zombies." Lu Zhao shook his head. "Those heat sources seem to be... people."
Su Wanqing's expression became somewhat solemn. She realized that a crisis was quietly approaching.
