Chapter 16 You shouldn't embarrass Jinyun for this kind of thing

Chapter 16 You shouldn't embarrass Jinyun for this kind of thing

The door of the director's mother's ward was gently pushed open, and the doctor walked out with a heavy face.

"Miss Gu, can we talk for a moment?"

They stopped at the corner of the corridor. The doctor took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes tiredly: "To tell you the truth, the patient's condition is not optimistic."

"The liver cancer has spread to the advanced stage, and coupled with the trauma to the brain, it's a blessing that he can survive for three months."

Gu Manman felt her legs go weak and she could barely stand. She held onto the wall, her throat tight. “Is there no other way?”

The doctor shook his head: "We will do our best, but please be prepared."

"Thank you, doctor."

Walking back to the ward, the director's mother was lying quietly with her eyes closed, her chest rising and falling slightly.

Gu Manman thought about how she had been immersed in false love over the past few months and had ignored the dean's mother's increasingly thin face and more frequent coughing.

Those clues that she ignored have now become knives that cut her heart.

How ironic! The love she pursued was just a mirage, while the person who truly loved her was silently bearing the threat of death.

She took out her cell phone and dialed Su Yu's number.

"Hey, Manman, I was just about to call you about going abroad--"

"Su Yu, I can't leave." Gu Manman interrupted her.

"What? What happened?" Su Yu's tone immediately became tense.

Gu Manman took a deep breath and told Su Yu about the situation of the dean's mother.

There was silence on the other end of the phone for a long time before Su Yu's hoarse voice came: "Don't worry about the money, I'll transfer another sum."

"I'm not worried about money..." Gu Manman could no longer control herself and her tears burst out.

Once upon a time, she was heartbroken over the five-year relationship, but now she finds how insignificant the pain was.

The distance between life and death is the real chasm. The cruelest thing in the world is not being unable to get the love you want, but the separation between life and death.

Su Yu: "I will finish the work at hand as soon as possible and go back to accompany you."

"Su Yu, I'm so scared..." Gu Manman curled up on the plastic chair in the hospital like a helpless child.

"Manman, you are the strongest girl I have ever met. You will get through this."

After hanging up the phone, Gu Manman walked back to the bedside and gently held the rough hand of the director's mother.

These hands once wiped away the tears of countless orphans, but now they are so emaciated that only skin and bones are left.

"I'm sorry, Mother Dean," she whispered, "I've been so selfish during this time."

"Dean Mom, you once told me that life will not always be cruel to anyone, and now I want to say the same thing to you."

In the following days, she stayed by Dean Wu's bedside without leaving.

The sun was still shining brightly outside the window, people were coming and going in the hospital corridor, but her world was left with only this small ward and the increasingly frail figure on the bed.

The phone vibrated, displaying an unfamiliar number.

Gu Manman tiptoed out of the ward to answer the call.

"Ms. Gu, I'm Lin Jinyun."

"I think we should talk about the orphanage."

Gu Manman held the phone tightly: "Okay, where is it?"

"It's at the cafe across from the hospital. I'm already here."

After hanging up the phone, Gu Manman looked back at Director Wu who was sleeping in the ward, took a deep breath, and tidied her messy hair.

In the coffee shop, Lin Jinyun sat by the window.

"Please sit down." Lin Jinyun gracefully gestured to the seat opposite.

Gu Manman sat down expressionlessly, with her hands flat on the table: "Ms. Lin, just speak frankly."

Lin Jinyun gently stirred the coffee with just the right smile: "The land of the orphanage is very important to our Lin family. That piece of land is the last piece of the puzzle in the planning of the entire commercial district."

"I have already raised the purchase price. You should know that the land will be purchased sooner or later. Why put up a pointless resistance?"

Gu Manman's eyes were cold: "That piece of land is more important to the children, it is their home."

"Home?" Lin Jinyun sneered, "A bunch of unwanted children following an old lady, you call that a home?"

She tapped the tabletop lightly with her slender fingers, and said in a disdainful tone: "You should know better than anyone what kind of home that kind of place is."

A trace of pain flashed across Gu Manman's eyes, but it was quickly suppressed: "Ms. Lin, please be careful with your words."

"This project was jointly developed by Feng Group and Lin Group." Lin Jinyun's eyes flashed with malice, "Mingzhou doesn't care about you at all, otherwise why would he let my company touch the orphanage you cherish?"

Gu Manman clenched her fists, her knuckles making slight crackling sounds. She tried to stay calm, but her chest was already aching.

Lin Jinyun stood up and looked down at her: "I'll say this for the last time, the orphanage must be moved. Fortunately, the old lady is about to die..."

In an instant, Gu Manman's eyes turned blood red. She couldn't bear to hear Lin Jinyun insulting the dean's mother.

She stood up suddenly, raised her hand and gave Lin Jinyun a loud slap in the face.

The crisp "pop" sound was particularly harsh in the coffee shop, and the surrounding customers all looked sideways.

Lin Jinyun covered his face, but a strange smile appeared on the corner of his mouth.

Only then did Gu Manman notice that Feng Mingzhou was standing quietly ten meters behind her.

His eyes, which had once intoxicated her, were now ice-cold, and he looked at her expressionlessly.

Lin Jinyun immediately stepped forward and took Feng Mingzhou's arm, tears streaming down her cheeks: "Mingzhou, I just told her about the orphanage..."

Feng Mingzhou didn't look at Lin Jinyun, his eyes were always fixed on Gu Manman.

"Manman," he began, his voice low and calm, as if he was handling an insignificant document, "The matter of the orphanage was decided after a business evaluation. We will provide adequate financial compensation. You shouldn't make things difficult for Jinyun for this matter."

His tone was businesslike, as if he was explaining a project plan to someone he had just met.

There was no warmth, no emotion, no regard for their past relationship.

Gu Manman stood there, watching Feng Mingzhou protect Lin Jinyun behind him.

She didn't say anything, her lips were tightly pursed into a line, and her eyes were red.

Lin Jinyun's trick was too obvious. To her, it was like a TV drama plot that she had watched a hundred times - the victim's face was filled with fear, tears rolled down his cheeks, and the perpetrator stood aside with a ferocious look on his face.

What a cliché script! Even a child can see through it, but some people are willing to buy into it.

She looked at Feng Mingzhou's face, which had once made her heart beat fast. His handsome features were now tense and his brows were furrowed.

The eyes that always looked at her with tenderness now only showed blame and alienation.

What's the point of explaining? Gu Manman asked herself.

She watched Feng Mingzhou patting Lin Jinyun's back with his big hand and felt a dull pain in her chest.

He stood by Lin Jinyun without hesitation, protecting her from the wind and rain, while he was always the one who needed to explain and prove his innocence.

Love is never fair, just like the two ends of a scale. Once there is a preference, the other side must bear more weight.

Every scene carefully designed by Lin Jinyun can achieve the desired effect, not because she is so smart, but because Feng Mingzhou is willing to believe her.

Gu Manman lowered her eyes and decided not to argue. She picked up her bag and turned away, her back straight.

The glass door of the coffee shop closed behind him, blocking out all the sounds from inside.

This time she really understood that where there is favoritism, there will always be someone destined to be wronged.

Unfortunately, that person was her.

She looked at the once familiar figure and suddenly felt an unprecedented sense of fatigue and relief.

She turned and left the cafe without looking back at them.
