Chapter 29 I hope you and I will never meet again in this life
St. Laurent's Church, one of the oldest and most magnificent churches in the city, is now decorated like a fairy tale wonderland.
Tens of thousands of white roses and champagne-colored tulips, airlifted from the Netherlands, wrapped around the ancient stone pillars and covered both sides of the red carpet leading to the altar.
Outside the church, the lawn was meticulously trimmed. Under the huge white tent, the champagne tower sparkled with crystal light and the band played melodious classical music.
The guests were all well-dressed and looked either rich or noble.
This is the marriage of the century between the Feng and Lin families, an event that concerns the territory of the business empire and the structure of the upper class society.
In the bridal dressing room, Lin Jinyun sat in front of a huge floor-to-ceiling mirror, wearing a high-end wedding dress worth tens of millions. The layers of lace looked like piles of snow, and the diamonds inlaid on the hem sparkled under the lights.
Her makeup was exquisite and perfect, with an irrepressible smile on her lips and undisguised victory and pride in her eyes.
The stylist was adjusting her veil. The antique crown was said to have once belonged to a royal family in Europe.
"You are so beautiful, Jinyun," her mother, Madam Lin, stood beside her, her eyes full of satisfaction, "After today, you will be Madam Feng in the full sense of the word."
Lin Jinyun looked at herself in the mirror, gently stroking her still flat belly, her smile becoming more and more proud.
She finally got everything she wanted.
At the other end of the church, in the exclusive lounge.
Feng Mingzhou stood in front of the huge stained glass window, his back as straight as a pine tree.
He wore a custom-made black tuxedo that was cut to perfectly frame his broad shoulders and slim waist.
The sunlight filtered through the stained glass, casting mottled shadows on him, but it was unable to dispel the subtle chill that lingered around him.
There was no expression on his face, but his eyes were deep as he looked at the bustling crowd outside the window. No one knew what he was thinking.
"Mr. Feng, it's almost time." Li Xu reminded in a low voice.
Feng Mingzhou took a deep breath, turned around, and his face had returned to its usual indifference and calmness.
The wedding march sounded solemnly.
The heavy church door slowly opened, letting in light.
Lin Jinyun held her father's arm and walked slowly on the red carpet covered with flower petals, her face flushed with happiness under the veil.
Everyone's eyes were focused on her, and exclamations of praise rang out one after another.
Feng Mingzhou stood in front of the altar, looking at Lin Jinyun who was slowly walking towards him, perfect like an emotionless sculpture.
Airport terminal.
The grand wedding of the century was being broadcast live on the huge LCD screen.
"...For better or worse, for richer or poorer, in health or sickness, are you willing to love her and cherish her until death separates you?" The solemn voice of the priest came through the speakers.
The camera gave Feng Mingzhou a close-up.
He looked at Lin Jinyun, paused, and then uttered three words clearly: "I do."
The voice was steady and firm, without any trace of hesitation.
Next came Lin Jinyun's vows, her voice filled with excitement and sweetness: "I do."
They exchanged rings and put champagne-colored diamond rings on each other's ring fingers.
There was warm applause and cheers in the church.
The scene on the screen switched to the smiling faces of the guests.
/
Fragments of memory came to my mind.
"We'll hold our wedding here."
Feng Mingzhou hugged her from behind, resting his chin on her neck, his warm breath brushing her skin. Gu Manman could smell his clean woody scent mixed with a hint of tobacco.
At that time, they were curled up on the sofa in the apartment, watching a documentary about an island. He pointed at the incredibly blue sea on the screen and said, "Right here, I'm going to have someone buy it, and it will be our island in the future."
Gu Manman's eyes widened at the time and she poked his sturdy arm, "Boss Feng, isn't your operation a bit too 'inhumane'?"
He chuckled, his chest vibrating, making her feel itchy. "How can I be considered 'inhumane' if I spend money on you?" He tilted his head and rubbed his nose against her cheek. "Besides, my wife deserves the best."
He began to describe it with great interest. His usually deep and sharp eyes were now surprisingly bright. He was completely different from the Feng Mingzhou who usually had the final say in the business world.
He said that in the evening, when the sun was about to set, he would build a pure white flower arch on the beach, and the ground would be covered with gardenia petals, a thick layer that would be soft to step on, because she liked the scent of gardenias.
"Guests..." Feng Mingzhou pinched her face, "Just the two of us, at most... plus Su Yu, that light bulb." He paused and added, "Let her be your bridesmaid, so she won't keep complaining that I'm not nice enough."
Gu Manman was amused by him, "Just the three of us? What should we eat? We can't get married on an empty stomach, right?"
"Silly girl," he scratched her nose lovingly, "We've already arranged it. We invited that old French Michelin three-star guy to fly over and cook a seafood barbecue for us. There will be plenty of lobsters and oysters, as well as your favorite mango sticky rice. The dessert chef was hired from Italy, I guarantee you'll want more after you've had it."
He described it so specifically, as if the romantic scene could come true in the next second.
The setting sun dyed the sea golden, the slightly salty sea breeze blew up her veil, he wore a simple white shirt, with the sleeves casually rolled up, revealing the smooth lines of his forearm muscles, holding her hand, and stepping barefoot on the soft beach. There was only the sound of the waves and their heartbeats around them.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" He noticed her stunned gaze and raised the corners of his mouth proudly, "Are you impressed by your husband's handsomeness?"
Gu Manman's cheeks flushed, and she turned away awkwardly, "Stop being so conceited."
But he refused to let her go. He stretched out his hands and gently turned her face over, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Manman," his voice became low, his eyes were terribly focused, and there was a deep affection in them, "On the wedding day, you belong to me from head to toe, inside and out."
He lowered his head and kissed her.
Let her indulge in it, forget all the anxieties and doubts, and be left with only joy and anticipation in her heart.
She could even imagine the champagne bubbles dancing in the golden sunset, reflecting his eyes that were gentle enough to drown people as he gazed at her.
/
A sudden voice jerked her back to reality.
"Ms. Gu, the plane is about to take off, it's time to board."
A short-haired woman wearing a black business suit and with a stern face walked up to Gu Manman and leaned over slightly.
Gu Manman turned her head and looked at the female bodyguard sent by Feng Mingzhou to "escort" her to Paris.
"Let's go, Miss Gu."
Gu Manman's gaze fell back on the screen.
In the picture, Feng Mingzhou was holding Lin Jinyun's hand and accepting everyone's blessings. His profile was perfect and there seemed to be a polite smile at the corner of his mouth.
He finally, completely, belonged to someone else.
She took one last look at the screen and turned away resolutely.
[Feng Mingzhou, I wish that you and I will never meet again in this life]
