Chapter 7 Gu Manman, You Are Just a Passerby After All
Lin Jinyun took off his coat and threw it to the servant who came over without even giving him a glance.
The light in the living room was soft, but it made the coldness in her eyes even more biting.
A man in a black suit stood respectfully by, holding a brown briefcase in his hand.
The man lowered his head and handed over the file bag: "Ms. Lin, this is all the information you want about Gu Manman."
Lin Jinyun nodded slightly, signaling him to leave.
She took out the contents of the file bag page by page and spread them on the coffee table.
There is a whole row of photos of Gu Manman, from childhood to adulthood, from immaturity to maturity.
She flicked the photos with her fingertips, her eyes examining them as if she were examining a substandard product.
"So he's an orphan."
She talked to herself, with a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
According to information, Gu Manman lost her parents at the age of six and was sent to an orphanage. She did not live independently until she was eighteen.
Lin Jinyun turned to the next page, which was about Gu Manman’s study experience. She received scholarships all the way and climbed up step by step with excellent grades and writing talent.
What follows next is how she and Feng Mingzhou got to know each other.
Lin Jinyun's hand paused for a moment on the last page.
"That's it? It's that simple?" She raised her eyebrows, a hint of disdain flashing in her eyes.
"Gu Manman, an orphan with a mediocre family background, how can she be worthy of the Feng family?"
She walked to the French window and looked through the rain at the faintly visible city lights in the distance.
There, the Feng family’s building stood in the center of the city.
Lin Jinyun and Feng family have been the two giants in the business empire since their fathers’ generation.
Since she was a child, she had been regarded as the future Lady of Feng, and the marriage between the two families was almost a foregone conclusion.
That Gu Manman was just a support and companion for Mingzhou during his blindness.
"Ridiculous." She said softly, her tone full of sarcasm, "How could Mr. Feng allow an orphan with unknown origins to enter the Feng family?"
Lin Jinyun returned to the sofa and looked at the information again, with even more contempt in his eyes.
No matter how much Feng Mingzhou dotes on that woman, in the end it's just a toy.
A satisfied smile appeared on Lin Jinyun's lips.
Her fingertips slid across the photo and finally stopped on Gu Manman's face.
With a little force, she tore the photo into two pieces.
"Gu Manman, you are just a passer-by after all."

As the night deepens, the neon lights on both sides of the street reflect blurry light and shadows in the puddles after the rain.
Zhao Yang's car slowly stopped on the side of the street. He turned to look at Gu Manman who was sitting in the passenger seat. She looked dazed, staring out the window with empty eyes.
"We're here, Yonghe Apartment." Zhao Yang reminded softly, interrupting Gu Manman's thoughts.
Gu Manman finally woke up from her dream and forced a smile: "Thank you."
Zhao Yang frowned slightly, with a hint of doubt in his voice: "You are still living here? Didn't Mingzhou already give you the villa? Why don't you move in?"
"Just received it, haven't had time to sort it out yet."
Zhao Yang smiled, with sincere envy in his eyes: "That villa is really nice, Mingzhou put a lot of thought into it. When he was choosing the location, I accompanied him to more than a dozen places, just to find a perfect location with mountains behind and water in front."
"The design was revised seven or eight times, and even the height of the kitchen countertop was specially customized according to your height."
Zhao Yang saw the emotions hidden behind Gu Manman's silence and said softly, "Don't think too much. Mingzhou and Lin Jinyun grew up together."
"Mingzhou has always treated Jinyun as his sister. Mingzhou's attitude towards Jinyun is more of a responsibility and protection, not what you think."
Gu Manman smiled bitterly and shook her head. She knew Zhao Yang meant well.
"Thank you for sending me back." Gu Manman pushed open the car door, and cold rain immediately hit her face.
She didn't hold an umbrella and let the rain wet her long hair and clothes.
"Hey, Gu Manman! Hurry up and get an umbrella!" Zhao Yang yelled at her in the car, his voice blurred by the rain, "If you go home in the rain and catch a cold, Mingzhou will definitely skin me alive!"
She turned a deaf ear and walked straight towards the apartment door.
The rain seeped from the top of my head all the way into my heart, which was good, as it helped to extinguish the nameless anger in my heart.
Returning to the apartment, she mechanically closed the door and even forgot to turn on the light. She just stood in the dark, letting the water droplets drip from the ends of her hair and gather into small puddles on the floor.
The sound of water in the bathroom started and then stopped. She casually wrapped herself in her nightgown, but her body began to tremble uncontrollably.
Her head felt increasingly heavy, and her body alternately hot and cold. She dragged herself to the bed, not even bothering to cover herself with the quilt.
In the morning, Gu Manman had a fever so severe that she couldn't speak and didn't even have the strength to hold a cup of water.
While she was half conscious, she heard the sound of a key turning.
"Manman?"
Feng Mingzhou stroked her hot forehead and his expression suddenly became extremely ugly.
"How did you get burned like this?"
Gu Manman opened her eyes slightly, looked at Feng Mingzhou's anxious face, and forced a pale smile: "Why are you here?"
Feng Mingzhou picked her up without saying a word, his movements mixed with anger and heartache.
He put on a thick coat for her and took out his cell phone: "Prepare the car, right away."

Hospital.
Feng Mingzhou sat beside the bed and watched the nurse put an IV on Gu Manman.
During the infusion, he held her hand the whole time, his brows furrowed.
"From now on, on rainy days, no matter where you go, the driver will pick you up at the door." His tone was irrefutable.
Gu Manman shook her head weakly and wanted to say something, but he held her down gently.
"Don't talk, and have a good rest."
His fingertips gently stroked the corners of her eyes.
During these days, Feng Mingzhou almost never left her side, personally cooking porridge, feeding her medicine, and even carefully peeling oranges for her one by one.
When it was late at night and everyone was asleep, Gu Manman couldn't help but gently stroke his black hair as she watched him sleeping on the bed.
She knew she couldn't let him go, so she decided to give each other some more time.
Maybe it’s to see the truth, or maybe it’s just that I can’t bear to let go.
On the third day, Gu Manman's fever finally subsided and she was discharged from the hospital and returned to her apartment.
/
The doorbell rang.
Feng Mingzhou stood up and opened the door.
Zhao Yang stood outside the door, holding an exquisite fruit basket in his hand, with a flattering smile on his face: "How is it, is sister-in-law's cold better?"
He looked past Feng Mingzhou and tried to look at Gu Manman inside the room.
"What are you doing here?" Feng Mingzhou's voice was cold.
Zhao Yang was stunned for a moment, his smile was a little stiff: "Come and see my sister-in-law, she got caught in the rain that day, I was worried-"
"I was going to walk her in that night, but she refused to let me get out of the car."
Zhao Yang defended himself, with a hint of grievance in his tone.
Feng Mingzhou's voice seemed to be squeezed out from between his teeth: "You're just going to let her walk alone in the rain?"
Zhao Yang was choked and speechless. He looked down at the fruit basket in his hand and scratched his head in embarrassment.
"Mingzhou, don't be like this." Gu Manman's voice came from behind, "I wanted to get wet in the rain."
Feng Mingzhou turned around: "Why are you up? Go back and lie down."
He strode over to her and held her shoulders gently but firmly.
"I'm much better now."
Zhao Yang stood at the door, his eyes shifting between the two of them.
"This is the fruit I bought for my sister-in-law to make amends to her."
He walked into the house, placed the fruit basket on the coffee table, and rubbed his hands uncomfortably.
Feng Mingzhou ignored him and helped Gu Manman sit back on the sofa, gently covering her with a blanket.
"If anything happens to her, do you think sending her some fruits will solve the problem?"
Zhao Yang shrank his neck.
"Is it not okay that I was wrong?" He raised his hands in surrender. "Next time I will definitely send you home and never let my sister-in-law get wet."
Zhao Yang finally fled in the face of Feng Mingzhou's cold stare, and before leaving, he did not forget to repeatedly remind Gu Manman to have a good rest.
