She wanted to say something more, but Liu Dekai smiled and put a piece of meat on her plate. "Alright, Mom isn't feeling unwell. You should eat. Mom is just so happy. Come on, try my cooking."
He subtly diverted Su Yueya's attention, refocusing it on the dishes on the table.
Su Yueya tasted the food and then gave a sweet smile. "Delicious! I didn't expect you to be such a good cook, honey. I thought you were just teasing me during the day!"
To be honest, Liu Dekai's cooking skills are just average, but he's generous with the amount of oil and seasonings he uses. In this era of meat and oil scarcity, no one will complain about any meat.
Su Yueya ate happily, as if she could already see a happy future beckoning to her.
"Mom, honey, I'll do the dishes in a bit. You two get some rest, and I'll take care of the rest."
Zhang Cuihua absentmindedly ate her rice, not noticing what she said.
The smile on Liu Dekai's lips faded. "It's okay, I'll wash it."
Su Yueya wanted to argue, to tell Liu Dekai that she couldn't just eat and drink for free. Since Liu Dekai cooked the meal, it was only right that she wash the dishes.
But for some reason, before she could finish speaking, she felt a wave of drowsiness wash over her.
The drowsiness came on strong, and she yawned several times in a row. Her mind was foggy, and she suddenly became unclear-headed.
She tried to sit up straight, but her body swayed uncontrollably.
Her vision blurred, and everything spun around her. Su Yueya mumbled groggily, "Honey, why am I feeling sleepy?"
"Go to sleep if you're tired..." Liu Dekai's voice was ethereal and elusive, carrying an irresistible allure.
"Snap!"
Her head slammed heavily onto the table, and Su Yueya drifted off to sleep, her consciousness fading.
Zhang Cuihua was so startled by the loud noise that she jumped up from her chair. "Is she...is she alright?"
It's no wonder she was worried; Zhang Cuihua had never done anything like this in her entire life. She was also afraid that since she and Dekai lacked experience, what if they administered the medicine too aggressively and harmed Su Yueya?
In stark contrast to her was Liu Dekai's composure and calmness.
His gaze was calm and unhurried as he reached out and shook Su Yueya. "Yueya, Yueya? Go back to your room and sleep if you're sleepy."
But the only response he received was the quiet, silent night.
Liu Dekai finally showed his first genuine smile since returning home.
"Mom, it's alright. The medication has taken effect, and she won't wake up for a while. Let's hurry and pack our bags and leave."
He spoke these words in a calm tone, almost with a hint of lightness. It seemed he was celebrating that he had finally gotten rid of such a burden.
As night fell outside the window, Liu Dekai urged his mother to hurry up and carried the luggage that had been prepared in advance.
"Let's go, or it will be too late."
Zhang Cuihua and her son walked out the door, glancing back uneasily at the silent house.
"Dekai, is this really a good thing for us to do?"
She looked anxious. "She's a young woman, all alone here. The rent is almost up, what will happen if she gets evicted?"
Zhang Cuihua felt really guilty, so the two of them just packed up and left. But what would Yueya do if she had nowhere to go?
She checked; her family hadn't left Yueya any money, and when the lease expired, she'd be penniless. She didn't know how she'd survive.
“No, maybe we should take her with us…” Zhang Cuihua turned around and wanted to go back to wake up Su Yueya.
Liu Dekai's eyes turned cold, and he immediately grabbed his mother's hand, his eyes icy.
He lowered his voice and threatened, "Mom, do you want me to be ruined?"
Zhang Cuihua was almost in tears. "That's not what I meant, Dekai. It's not safe for her, a grown woman, to stay here."
"Mom!" Liu Dekai interrupted his mother forcefully, "She's so beautiful, she can have everything just by spreading her legs, we don't need to worry about her."
Zhang Cuihua was stunned. She couldn't believe that these words had come from her son's mouth.
Liu Dekai forced a smile, trying to appear gentle. "What I mean is, she's not bad-looking. Even if we leave, she'll be able to remarry soon, so we don't need to worry about her."
“Mom, I know you mean well, but you have to think about me too. I’m already dating the brigade commander’s daughter. If we take her along now, everything I’ve worked so hard for will disappear.”
"Everyone looks out for themselves, and we're family." Liu Dekai's smile faded as he looked at his mother with heartache. "It wasn't easy for you to raise me all by yourself. I just want you to have a good life. Mom, nobody else matters. We're family!"
These words completely moved Zhang Cuihua.
She's worked so hard all these years, isn't it all for her son?
Su Yueya is a good person, but she is, after all, an outsider.
Her son was right; she shouldn't have been soft-hearted.
Zhang Cuihua's gaze gradually hardened. "Alright, let's go!"
This time, neither of them looked back.
Although Zhang Cuihua felt guilty, when she thought about her son's future, she could only choose to let Yueya down.
Liu Dekai boarded the train, and a huge weight was finally lifted from his heart.
Just thinking about Su Yueya's pretty face made me feel a little regretful.
To be honest, Su Yueya was really beautiful. Even in the army, he had never seen a girl more beautiful than Su Yueya.
The brigade commander's daughter was of average appearance; if it weren't for her wealthy father, he would never have been interested in her.
But no matter how beautiful she was, it was useless; Su Yueya couldn't help herself.
