Su Yueya was already very beautiful, and when she smiled, it was as warm as a spring breeze, leaving Meng Yingxin speechless.
“Dr. Su, you’re so handsome…” Meng Yingxin’s eyes were glued to you.
She knew what the female soldiers talked about her behind her back. They said she looked like a vixen, loved to seduce men, and complained about her lack of ability. She knew all of this because her sister and mother used to say the same things to her when she was at home.
Meng Yingxin didn't think she was particularly beautiful, but she felt that Su Yueya was truly beautiful at that moment.
Especially when she smiles, it makes people feel so warm, like their hearts are melting.
“Especially when you smile, it’s so gentle,” Meng Yingxin said.
Su Yueya's smile widened as she thought to herself that she was indeed just a child, her words and actions seemed silly, and she was so beautiful that it was hard for her not to be envied and ostracized.
Sometimes, for women who are not strong enough, an outstanding appearance is not their weapon, but rather a deadly lock that drags them into the abyss.
“You’re very pretty too,” Su Yueya said, reaching out to tidy up a stray hair at Meng Yingxin’s temple.
Up close, the little girl's skin is exceptionally fair and tender. Even with all the wind and sun during training, it hasn't made her rough; she still looks like a juicy peach.
Su Yueya looked on, feeling an itch to pinch her, but was afraid of scaring the little girl.
"Drink some water," Su Yueya reminded him, without actually pinching his cheek.
Meng Yingxin nodded with a smile and took a small bite.
"It's so sweet!" She looked at Su Yueya in surprise and asked in a low voice, "Dr. Su, is there a little bit of sugar added to this boiled water?"
"No, the sweetness of sugar water is different from this kind of sweetness. This tastes even better than sugar water."
Meng Yingxin recalled carefully that she had never drunk such delicious water before. Even compared to the sweet water in the mountain streams, this water was far superior.
"No sugar added, just plain water," Su Yueya said, thinking to herself that the little girl's tongue was really sharp.
Meng Yingxin nodded, finished the glass of water, wiped the kettle lid with a handkerchief, and returned it to Su Yueya. It was clear that she was very thoughtful.
At the training ground, there's basically nothing else to do besides the daily training sessions.
When Su Yueya was bored, she would go out for a stroll, which gave her more opportunities to chat with Meng Yingxin.
As for Meng Yingxin, thanks to Su Yueya as her first friend, the days during her training period didn't seem so difficult, and she could occasionally see a smile on her face.
So, the other female soldiers added another charge against Meng Yingxin: trying to please others.
"Look at her fawning way of doing things. I don't know what good it will do to please a military doctor. Will a military doctor improve her test scores? Or is she injured during training and wants the military doctor to take a look at her more often? Hahaha..."
"Why not just go and curry favor with the instructor? He might give her extra training and special attention!"
"She'd have to dare! The instructors are so fierce, and to ensure fairness, it's not allowed to ask the instructors for extra practice on the side."
"It's all in vain... No matter how well Meng Yingxin tries to please the military doctor, she'll still be forced to leave in half a month. No one can save her."
"A joke is a joke, no matter what you do, it won't change anything."
Hearing the new arrangement, Meng Yingxin felt wronged, but she didn't dare to argue with others, for fear of becoming the target of public criticism, even though she already was.
She just wanted to spend the rest of her days as peacefully as possible; as for whether she could stay in the army...
Let fate decide.
Su Yueya usually doesn't have much to do, so during her breaks she often chats with Meng Yingxin, hoping to keep her from being stuck in a bad mood.
As they talked more, the two became quite familiar with each other.
Meng Yingxin's smile became even wider.
"Since you were able to get into university, you must have read a lot of books, right? Do you read novels in your spare time?" Su Yueya asked.
“Yes,” Meng Yingxin nodded. “The teachers will recommend classic works to us, but I don’t have money to buy books, so I can only read the ones available at school. And I don’t dare to take them home, so I can only find time to read them at school.”
"Then you must not have read those really interesting novels?"
"No." Meng Yingxin looked envious.
She actually loves reading, but she lacks both the means and the resources, so she can only seize every opportunity to read during her school years.
"Dr. Su, you must have read a lot of books, can you tell me about them?" Meng Yingxin asked, her eyes full of envy and curiosity.
"Hmm... then let me tell you about some of the books I've read for leisure. Speaking of which, there's a type of novel that's quite similar to your situation," Su Yueya said deliberately.
"Yeah?"
"Yes, this type of novel is called a rebirth novel."
"Rebirth?" Meng Yingxin was completely baffled and asked stupidly, "What does that mean?"
"It means the protagonist dies, but retains memories of his past life, and is resurrected at a certain point in time, and then lives again," Su Yueya said.
"Is that even possible?" Meng Yingxin found it incredibly unbelievable. She had never even heard of such a novel before. It was as if a new world had opened up for her. She chased after Su Yueya and asked, "So, if you have your past memories, are you really that amazing? If you're reborn, you won't have to go through all those painful things from before?"
“Yes,” Su Yueya nodded, “These kinds of novels all have a fixed formula. For example, the protagonist is usually abused, tormented, and betrayed by his family, living a very, very miserable life until he is driven to his death…”
As Meng Yingxin listened, she felt a tightness in her chest.
Su Yueya was right; it was very similar to her situation. She had never felt any warmth from her family; all she had ever experienced was abuse, torment, and betrayal.
So at this moment, she felt a deep sense of empathy and even envied the protagonists in novels who could be reborn. If she could be "reborn" once, could she also escape her demanding family and live a wonderful life?
"Another major characteristic of rebirth novels is that the protagonist always shouts out a particularly classic slogan when he dies," Su Yueya said.
"What slogan?" Meng Yingxin asked.
She was completely captivated by what Su Yueya described, whether it was from a novel or in reality, she found it very enjoyable to listen to.
"Ahem—ahem—" Su Yueya cleared her throat, got into performance mode, and started acting right in front of Meng Yingxin. "Watch closely."
"If there is an afterlife, I will make you pay for your crimes in blood—"
Su Yueya deliberately dragged out the last syllable of "偿" (cháng, to repay), expressing her injustice and anger.
