Chapter 5. Song Huai dreamt of the day he first met Bai Xiao, a dream he hadn't had in a long time.
After Bai Xiao left, Song Huai forgot to clean up the dishes and stood there stunned for a long time, unable to believe his ears: He just... was apologizing to him? If he understood correctly, what happened last time was about their wedding night, right? Bai Xiao actually apologized to him for what happened that night. Did this mean that perhaps he didn't hate him that much?
A surge of joy welled up in Song Huai's heart. He felt as happy as if he were floating on a cloud, and he couldn't help but smile.
He only calmed down when he inadvertently noticed the necklace around his neck.
The necklace was a gift from Song Huai to his younger brother. To celebrate Song Huai's admission to his dream music academy, Song Boyu used his savings to buy the necklace for his older brother.
At that moment, upon suddenly receiving such a precious gift, Song Huai was at a loss. He stared wide-eyed at the dazzling blood-red gemstone before him. After a while, he said to his younger brother, half delighted and half reproachful, "Why did you buy such an expensive gift..." Song Boyu did not answer him, but smiled slightly and helped Song Huai put the necklace around his neck, while whispering in his ear, "No gemstone is as precious as your brother."
Song Huai didn't hear what his younger brother said, but he felt his brother blowing air into his ear, which tickled him. He couldn't help but laugh and said, "Song Boyu, stop messing around!" The two then started playing and laughing like they did when they were children.
Bringing himself back to reality from his memories, Song Huai felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over his head. He reminded himself again that his relationship with Bai Xiao was at most a partnership; he absolutely could not have any inappropriate thoughts about her, not even just a fleeting thought.
That night, Song Huai dreamed of the day he first met Bai Xiao, a dream he hadn't had in a long time. After Song Boyu's death, Song Huai rarely dreamed of Bai Xiao anymore.
That day, he and Song Chengping had an unprecedentedly fierce argument. Song Chengping disapproved of him being obsessed with the piano all day long, just like his biological mother. Instead, he hoped that he could go to a good university and study economics or management so that he could help him manage the company in the future.
As the argument escalated, Song Chengping realized his son was utterly hopeless. He gradually calmed down, looked coldly at Song Huai, his eyes filled with disappointment: "Song Huai, are you really sure about this?"
“Yes, I’ve made up my mind.” Song Huai looked at his father defiantly.
"Fine...you're very good." Song Chengping laughed angrily, then left Song Huai's room without looking back, adding before leaving, "How did I end up with a son like you!"
From then on, the already strained father-son relationship between Song Huai and Song Chengping deteriorated further.
Watching Song Chengping's retreating figure, Song Huai felt a tightness in his chest for some reason. He had long understood that his father did not support his future development in the music field, but he still insisted on going his own way. Today's situation was an inevitable result, but he still felt very uncomfortable. He felt that he could breathe but could not catch his breath, and he wanted to cry but could not squeeze out a single tear after holding it in for a long time.
After being frustrated for a while, Song Huai finally decided to leave this chaotic place and go for a walk.
Song Huai wandered aimlessly until he reached a nearby park.
The air was filled with the scent of damp earth, and the sun after the rain was still a little lazy. The gentle sunlight reflected on the lake, like scattered diamonds on the water, and the dazzling light attracted people's attention.
Song Huai felt fortunate that he had not wasted such a beautiful time and scenery, and his gloomy mood from before had become much brighter.
Suddenly, a boy of similar age to Song Huai approached. He wore a simple white shirt and black trousers; the crisp, wrinkle-free shirt accentuated his tall and straight figure. His soft hair shimmered chestnut brown in the sunlight, and his eyes were bright, with thick eyelashes and slightly upturned corners, giving him a deep and captivating gaze. In that instant, the shimmering lake, the swaying willows—all the beautiful scenery—fell in comparison to the boy's picturesque features.
Song Huai stared at him, stunned, and impolitely stared intently at the boy in front of him.
Perhaps sensing Song Huai's intense gaze, the boy glanced at Song Huai casually, then continued walking as if nothing had happened, brushing past Song Huai.
The moment their eyes met, Song Huai's heart was pounding wildly. It wasn't until the boy had been gone for a long time that Song Huai came to his senses. He hurriedly ran back, wanting to chase after the boy who had made his heart flutter—as for what he would do after catching up, Song Huai had no idea.
Unfortunately, fate can come and go as it pleases. Song Huai searched for a long time in the crowd that day, but still couldn't find the boy. Song Huai lost all interest in appreciating the scenery and went home dejectedly.
That night, Song Huai finally finished composing the piece he had only started writing. Every note in the piece spoke of the throbbing longing of a young man experiencing his first love. Song Huai named the piece "At the moment."
Later, this piece became a hit across the country, and Song Huai, as the son of pianist Liang Hui, entered the public eye and gradually became well-known. It was from this piece that Song Huai truly began his musical journey.
There is a beautiful woman, whom I cannot forget once I have seen her. If I do not see her for a day, I am driven mad with longing.
Afterwards, Song Huai could never forget that boy, so much so that most of his life was trapped in the few seconds of their encounter. He didn't know whether this was a blessing or a curse.
Song Huai's connection with the boy continued. Three years later, he met the boy again and learned that the boy's name was Bai Xiao.
At this time, Bai Xiao had become Song Boyu's boyfriend. His younger brother and Bai Xiao entered the same university and majored in the same field. They joined the school basketball team together and the school debate team together, winning many awards for the school. It was only natural for them to be together.
Song Huai no longer remembered how he felt when he first learned that Bai Xiao and Song Boyu had just gotten together. He only vaguely remembered that the sunlight in the music room that day was so bright that he couldn't even see the sheet music clearly. He just sat there blankly on the piano bench for the whole afternoon without even bothering to close the curtains.
Some might think that love at first sight is pure nonsense, while others might think that with so many beautiful faces in the world, the reason you've chosen one in particular is because your genes match theirs. In other words, it's not just that you chose him, but that your genes chose him.
After thinking about it carefully, Song Huai felt that he should be considered the latter.
Perhaps, Song Huai was destined to fall in love with Bai Xiao.
This fate is a tragic one.
