Chapter 55 The Flowers Fall, Helplessly
Inside the main hall, expensive ambergris incense burned in a gilded bronze incense burner, filling the room with an air of extravagance.
Chu Huaiyu leaned back on the dragon throne, toying with a white jade wine cup between his fingers, the amber liquid inside swirling gently with his movements.
Below the stage, the dancers, dressed in fine silks and brocades, moved with the lightness of butterflies, yet they could not completely dispel the unease between Chu Huaiyu's brows.
Chu Huaiyu casually put down his wine glass, his gaze sweeping over the charming dancers, and suddenly, the scene of Lu Zhaoxue performing the Dance of the Startled Swan from many years ago flashed uncontrollably through his mind.
"Your Majesty..." A soft and charming voice rang in his ears, pulling Chu Huaiyu back to reality from his memories.
Chu Huaiyu looked up and saw a rather bold dancer gracefully walking towards him. The dancer held a golden cup in her hand, her slender fingers gripping the handle. She slowly brought the cup to his lips, her beautiful almond-shaped eyes curving into charming crescents.
The dancer's face was covered by a veil, revealing only a pair of affectionate eyes. The dancer's eyes were somewhat similar to Lu Zhaoxue's. Chu Huaiyu's heart skipped a beat, and he reached out and tore off her veil.
But the moment Chu Huaiyu saw the dancer's full face, the expectation in his eyes instantly turned into deep disappointment. In terms of the eyes alone, there was indeed a resemblance, but the resemblance was ultimately not her.
A cruel smile crept across Chu Huaiyu's lips. He shoved the dancer aside, looked down at the woman who had fallen onto the gold bricks, and said in an icy tone, "Who told you to come up here?"
"In reply to Your Majesty, it was this servant who saw that Your Majesty was depressed and wanted to cheer you up."
The dancer hurriedly prostrated herself at Chu Huaiyu's feet, a clear look of panic flashing across her face. She timidly called out, "Your Majesty..."
Chu Huaiyu stared blankly at the dancer's eyes, which bore a resemblance to Lu Zhaoxue's.
Just then, the woman seized the opportunity to climb onto his arm, her voice alluring and seductive: "Your Majesty, let this servant serve you..."
Chu Huaiyu disgustedly shook off the dancer, a strange sense of irritation rising within him. "Get out! All of you, get out of here!"
The dancer was terrified and scrambled out of the hall. Chu Huaiyu took a deep breath, turned around, and strode out of the hall, heading straight for Lu Zhaoxue.
Lu Zhaoxue had just lain down and was not yet fully asleep when she heard the respectful voice of Eunuch Wei outside the door, and knew that Chu Huaiyu had arrived.
Lu Zhaoxue turned to the side, her back to the palace door, and slowly closed her eyes, pretending to be fast asleep. She really didn't want to see Chu Huaiyu.
Chu Huaiyu pushed open the door and entered. The only light in the room was a dim night lamp. He walked straight to the bedside and sat down, staring at Lu Zhaoxue without moving.
Although Lu Zhaoxue had her eyes closed, she could clearly feel a burning gaze falling on her, making her feel extremely uncomfortable.
The next moment, Chu Huaiyu's lips landed on Lu Zhaoxue's forehead, from her forehead to her eyebrows and eyes, and then to her cheek. His kiss was tinged with a rare tenderness. Lu Zhaoxue kept her eyes closed, not wanting to give Chu Huaiyu any reaction.
Chu Huaiyu kissed Lu Zhaoxue intently. As he kissed her, he pulled her closer and buried his head in her neck, his warm breath spraying onto her skin.
After a while, Lu Zhaoxue quietly opened her eyes and reached out to push Chu Huaiyu away, but as soon as she exerted force, Chu Huaiyu tightened his arms.
Lu Zhaoxue looked helpless. Oh well, she was already a puppet to be manipulated by him anyway, so what else did she care about?
After an unknown amount of time, Chu Huaiyu's brows suddenly furrowed tightly, a look of pain appeared on his face, and fine beads of cold sweat even seeped from his forehead.
Lu Zhaoxue heard Chu Huaiyu calling her name softly. She quietly opened one eye and looked at Chu Huaiyu in the dim light. A dark light flashed in her eyes.
Suddenly, she involuntarily reached out and placed her hand on Chu Huaiyu's neck. Beneath the warm skin, she could feel a strong pulse beating.
If she were to use force now and strangle Chu Huaiyu to death in his sleep, would everything finally end? Once this thought arose, it grew wildly in Lu Zhaoxue's mind like a vine.
But then Lu Zhaoxue thought again. She was afraid that if she acted impulsively, she would implicate Chu Siheng and Lu Zhaoxing. She herself was not worth dying for, but what about Chu Siheng and Lu Zhaoxing...
Lu Zhaoxue withdrew her hand, her eyes filled with sorrow. She stared blankly into the darkness until the sky began to lighten.
