Mu Qiu subconsciously shook his head, "No, no! How could you let me witness my father being executed, Song Ci, you are so vicious!" Mu Qiu grabbed the cup of tea on the table and was about to throw it at Song Ci. Song Ci dodged it and quickly picked up the untouched cup of water in front of him and poured it on Mu Qiu's face.
The tea was cool and splashed on her face, making Mu Qiu shudder. She wiped the tea off her face and vaguely saw Song Ci walking towards her.
Song Ci pinched Mu Qiu's chin. She wiped her eyes again, and only then could she see Song Ci's face clearly. Song Ci's expression was cold, and he looked at her with extreme disgust, as if he were looking at a stink bug. "I wanted to do this a long time ago. I wonder if this cup of tea woke you up?"
Mu Qiu stared at her unwillingly without saying a word.
Song Ci suddenly dragged Mu Qiu towards the mirror hanging on the entrance wall. Song Ci was tall, and her arms were strong from regular exercise. She looked much more energetic than the sickly Mu Qiu. She easily dragged Mu Qiu to the mirror.
Song Ci asked Mu Qiu to stare into the mirror.
Mu Qiu looked up at the mirror and saw her embarrassed self and the high and mighty Song Ci who could not be desecrated.
Song Ci stared at Mu Qiu in the mirror and said, "Mu Qiu, take a good look in the mirror and see how dark your heart has become! Look at how beautiful and fair you are, but your heart is the darkest I have ever seen in the world!"
"I really feel sorry for my mother. She loved you until her death and wanted to give you her heart. But you, you even harmed your own mother. How can there be such a person as you in this world?"
"Look at me in the mirror and take a good look at me. Just how dark is your heart? Is it made of flesh?"
Mu Qiu stared at himself in the mirror in a daze, but found that his eyes were evasive and he didn't dare to look directly at the girl in it.
As he watched, Mu Qiu suddenly burst into tears. He didn't know whether he was scared by Song Ci or because he felt regret for the stupid things he had done.
Song Ci let go of Mu Qiu, and Mu Qiu just sat down on the floor.
"Mu Qiu, if you don't go to the execution ground tomorrow, I will send this video to Cheng Yanmo, to our shared WeChat group, and to my Weibo homepage, so that everyone can see how hypocritical, despicable, and disgusting this innocent and kind-hearted eldest daughter of the Mu family really is!"
Song Ci returned to the living room, picked up her white thermos, and left without looking back.
Mu Qiu looked at the beautiful girl in the mirror and for the first time felt like a stranger. When did she become someone who would do anything to survive?
-
The night before his execution, around 11 o'clock, Mu Mian was taken out of his cell. He was guarded by two armed police officers, a judicial officer, and a public security officer, who chatted with him.
This is called the beauty before death.
Normally, at this time, criminals could make some requests, and as long as they weren't too rude, they would be granted. But Mu Mian just sat quietly in the chair, not crying, not making a fuss, and not feeling sad. His calmness hardly seemed like that of a criminal about to be shot.
Several public servants who were in charge of guarding him looked at each other and felt that this man was the quietest and most cooperative death row inmate they had ever met since they started working.
By two o'clock in the morning, the staff were all a little sleepy. They finally perked up and asked Mu Mian, "If you have any last words to say, you can tell us."
Mu Mian glanced at them and shook his head.
Last words?
He has none of that.
There was no one in this world worthy of his final words. Although Mu Qiu was still alive, in Mu Mian's heart, his and Du Tingting's daughter was already dead.
"Well, is there anything you want to eat?"
Mu Mian was about to shake his head, but just as he did so, he suddenly stopped. After thinking for a moment, he said, "I want to eat a bowl of beef noodles."
"Okay, we'll do it for you right away!"
Twenty minutes later, a bowl of fragrant beef noodles was served to Mu Mian's table. They also considerately brought a small bowl of chili sauce. "If you want chili, add it yourself. The chef is worried that you don't like spicy food."
Mu Mian shook his head. "I don't eat spicy food."
He stared at the bowl of noodles in silence for a while before picking up his chopsticks and putting a mouthful of noodles into his mouth. As he chewed, Mu Mian's movements became slower and slower.
Seeing that he looked dissatisfied, the staff patiently asked, "Why, it's not to your liking? How about we change the chef to cook for you?"
Tears suddenly welled up in Mu Mian's eyes. He stared at the bowl of noodles, gazing at the garlic fruit inside, and suddenly whispered, "My wife knows I don't like garlic, so she never puts garlic in the beef noodles she makes for me."
Everyone in the room fell silent and no one responded.
Mu Mian still finished the bowl of noodles.
After eating the noodles, he said nothing and closed his eyes as if he was going to sleep.
It wasn't until dawn that he finally opened his eyes, staring at the dazzling morning light outside with a bit of photophobia. This was the last time he would see the sunrise in his life. The sunrise was beautiful, but it couldn't be as magnificent as the sunrise he and Du Tingting saw on their first trip to Huangshan.
At that moment, the armed police opened the door and walked in. They began to tie Mu Mian up, using a tight, rigged method they called "execution ropes." After tying him up, they inserted a sharp wooden sign into the back of Mu Mian's neck. It read "Shoot the murderer, Mu Mian," with a red cross through it.
After the forensic doctor came to verify Mu Mian's identity, he was taken to the public trial. As soon as the trial was over, Mu Mian was taken by the executioners to a Jiefang brand truck and rushed to the selected execution ground.
The batteries were fast-paced and the security was tight.
