"I know my wife has always been against Zhiyue. One time, she got jealous and slandered me and Zhiyue as having that kind of relationship. I was very angry at the time and felt that she had slandered the innocence of a little girl. In a rage, I slapped her."
"Later, my wife realized her mistake and apologized to me. I thought the matter was over. But I didn't expect a woman's jealousy and hatred could be so deep."
He had never expected that when a woman becomes ruthless, she can be so vicious.
"Zhiyue disappeared on a rainy day. Because of the heavy rain, no trace was left. Back in the millennium, the city's surveillance was far less sophisticated than it is now."
"Without surveillance and no clues, the police had no idea how to investigate the case. We were like headless flies, searching for her for more than two months."
"During that time, my wife comforted me every day, cooked me midnight snacks, and advised me to be at ease."
When Du Junfei recalled that time, his heart felt cold.
"Later, we found Zhiyue's schoolbag, and inside it, we discovered the recorder she had left behind. The police repaired the recorder, which had been soaked in water, and after listening to the contents of the recorder, we learned that she had argued with my wife before she disappeared."
In that audio file, his gentle and considerate wife used all kinds of filthy words to slander Zhiyue.
As a deaf-mute, Zhiyue could only cry helplessly.
The audio file could only prove but not convict his wife. The police investigated it for a long time but found nothing suspicious.
In the end, the matter was left unresolved.
Because of that incident, Du Junfei divorced his wife.
Du Junfei wiped his face with his hands and said, "I always thought that Zhiyue was dead..."
"Teacher Shen gave me the photo and asked me to find Zhiyue's whereabouts. He also wanted to confirm whether Zhiyue had passed away."
If Han Zhan can't find Zhiyue, then Zhiyue must be dead.
If Han Zhan finds it, that would be a good thing.
Du Junfei picked up the photo on the table with trembling hands. Looking at the woman in her thirties in the photo, Du Junfei's voice choked with sobs.
"Where is she now? You just said she was in a special situation, what's going on?"
Han Zhan fell silent.
His silence made Du Junfei feel uneasy.
"What's wrong?"
Han Zhan pressed his temples and sighed, "Zhiyue didn't disappear. She was sold to a mountain in Sichuan to be the wife of an old bachelor."
It was like a bolt from the blue, and Du Junfei was completely dumbfounded.
"What did you say?" Du Junfei was so angry that he clenched his teeth and his eyes turned bloodshot.
"She was sold to an old man as his wife?" The anger in Du Junfei's chest was about to burn out of his body.
He wants to kill someone!
"Han Zhan: "Well, she was smuggled back from outside by an old bachelor on a donkey cart. The old bachelor locked her in the house and imprisoned her for a year."
Imagine a deaf-mute girl locked up at home by an old man.
She won't call for help, how desperate she must be!
"Later, one day, the old bachelor was out farming when his house caught fire. When the villagers went to help put out the fire and opened the door, they found a girl locked in his bed."
"By then, the girl was already pregnant and the baby was five months old."
"After the girl was rescued by the police, they asked her about her background and address, but she just shook her head, saying she knew nothing."
"Zhiyue took the initiative to ask for an abortion of that child. Now, Zhiyue works as a dormitory supervisor at a school for the deaf and mute."
Du Junfei covered his face with his hands in pain, his shoulders shaking constantly.
Listening to Du Junfei's sad cries, Han Zhan closed his mouth and said nothing.
Du Junfei must be feeling very guilty and in pain.
Du Junfei cried for a few minutes before gradually calming down.
He rubbed his eyes with his palms, without raising his head, and asked Han Zhan in a crying voice: "She has lost her memory, right?"
"Um."
"Does she not remember what happened before she was abducted, or does she not remember what happened after she was abducted?"
Du Junfei hopes the answer is the latter.
But Han Zhan said: "She doesn't remember where her home is, and she doesn't remember if she has any relatives. She just forgot you."
Du Junfei felt heartbroken.
"Where is she now?"
Han Zhan turned the photo over.
Du Junfei saw the back of the photo and wrote a row of thin black characters with a fountain pen:
Special Education School of XX County, XX City, Sichuan Province.
Du Junfei put the photo in his pocket.
He wiped his tears hastily and when he stood up, he tripped over the chair behind him. Du Junfei picked up the chair and looked up to see Song Ci walking towards him lightly.
"Second Master, I'm ready, let's go!"
Song Ci saw Du Junfei's eyes were red and there were traces of tears on his face. She stopped where she was. "Second Master, are you crying?"
Du Junfei was too embarrassed to look up, and hurriedly said, "You guys eat, I have something to do." Then he left in a hurry.
At first, the pace was a little hurried, but later I just ran.
Song Ci was dumbfounded.
She turned around in confusion and looked at Han Zhan, "Brother Han."
Song Ci pointed in the direction where the Second Master disappeared and murmured, "What happened?"
Han Zhan asked her, "Do you know Zhiyue?"
Song Ci thought for a moment and said uncertainly, "Is it the child that Second Master raised before?"
Song Ci heard from her teacher that the second master had raised a girl before, but the girl fell into the river and her whereabouts were unknown. The police determined that she was dead.
