Chapter 52 Receiving the Imperial Decree

"Your sister is just happy for you. Don't overthink it. You'll have a good life from now on!"

It was rare for Imperial Physician Wen to hold Aunt Zhao's hand. He was usually engrossed in his medical studies and didn't have much of a need for sex, so he only had one wife and one concubine.

This Aunt Zhao was a patient she had saved years ago. She said that she was the only one left in her family and insisted on marrying him.

He thought it was just a matter of a meal, no big deal, and he could save one more person before accepting the offer.

He led the two back to the lobby, where his wife and eldest daughter were already seated.

Imperial Physician Wen sat in the main seat, his face full of smiles: "Everyone knows about what happened today, so I won't say any more."

"The main reason is that the child is getting married in three days, and to a prince no less. We can't mistreat her. We must provide her with everything she needs and not bring shame upon her!"

No sooner had she finished speaking than Zhang slapped the table hard!

With a snap.

Everyone flinched.

Zhang was the first wife of Imperial Physician Wen, and their eldest daughter was named Wenrou.

"You old scoundrel! Where do you get the nerve? What business is it of mine that she gets married? She's not my daughter! Besides, I only have one daughter, and that's Wenrou."

Zhang has had enough of this over the years, and her voice is very loud.

Wen Taiyi's smile vanished, and she looked at Zhang Shi coldly, saying, "How can you speak like that? You have no manners at all. As your legal mother, she calls you 'Mother,' how could you say such hurtful things!"

Zhang looked at him expressionlessly, a chill running through her: "What do you mean? Don't you have any idea what the situation is like at home?"

Imperial Physician Wen felt that Madam Zhang had become increasingly unreasonable over the years, and said helplessly, "I'm just asking you to prepare the child's dowry so that she can have a dignified marriage. Is that so difficult?"

Zhang picked up the teacup in front of her and splashed it over his face, roaring, "You dog! I've had enough!"

"We're struggling to even put food on the table, where am I supposed to find the money to prepare a betrothal gift for her?"

"Damn it! We might as well have the whole family cleaned up, tied with red ribbons, and go as part of the dowry!"

When Doctor Wen was splashed in the face, Aunt Zhao quickly went over and wiped his face with a handkerchief.

"Incomprehensible! You're a complete shrew, Zhang! Do you even remember who you are? You used to be the young lady of the Zhang family, how could you have become like this!" Doctor Wen was furious.

Zhang gave a bitter smile: "Look at what I'm wearing now? What kind of clothes is my Wenrou wearing? Where is the air of a noble lady?"

Wen Taiyi glanced at it, feeling a little guilty: "Is this my fault?"

Zhang has endured so much for so many years, but suddenly she doesn't want to endure it anymore!

Why should bad people have good reputations and live good lives?

But he and his daughter had to live like beggars.

She looked at the gentle girl, who was the daughter she had carried for ten months and given birth to. The girl's face was yellow, and she looked malnourished.

He was wearing coarse cloth clothes and looked at her obediently.

She used to be a young lady of the Zhang family. The Zhang family used to be generals, and she was their only daughter. After she got married, her father took the family to the frontier.

When she first got married, she had a generous dowry from her family, and she lived a pretty good life.

Later, after Aunt Zhao came into her life, she gave birth to Wen Nuan.

First, the child was in poor health, and it cost a lot of money to raise the child well.

That's fine.

This person has been kind-hearted since childhood and loves to take his own things to distribute and help others.

If you keep giving them away like this every day, you'll have given away all your family's assets over the years.

Outsiders see her as warm, kind, and loving, but she's spending her own money!

Zhang slapped Doctor Wen across the face: "Have you been blind all these years?"

She pointed at Wen Nuan angrily and said, "All these years, she's been spending money outside every day, and it's all my money she's spending!"

"When she was little, she would take food from home and give it away!"

"When they get a little older, they become even more powerful, taking all the family's money and giving it away!"

"Later, she even gave away the clothes and jewelry she owned!"

"I only said a few words to her and you called me heartless, damn it! I have no heart, but she certainly did, scattering everything in the house! That shameless thief!"

Physician Wen's eyes flickered, and he was speechless.

Wen Nuan's face was already covered in tears. Her white clothes and aggrieved expression made her look as pitiful as a little white flower swaying in the wind.

She shook her head, looking as pitiful as if her entire family had died, and said in a trembling voice:

"I didn't! I just felt so sorry for them! We're family, how could you say that to me? It breaks my heart!"

“I gave them food because they were starving; one bite could save a life.”

"I gave them money because their family was so poor that they would have to sell their child if they didn't give them money!"

"I didn't tell you later because you would always scold me, so I secretly took it!"

"Everything I've done has been a good deed, and I have a clear conscience!"

"I wear white clothes every day because only white clothes won't fade. If it were other colors, they would have faded long ago."

"We are a family, with parents, and we are a hundred times happier than those poor people. We should know how to be content!"

Although Wen Nuan felt wronged, there was not a trace of regret in her eyes when she looked at Zhang Shi!

Zhang was about to vomit blood. Where did this idiot come from?

She regretted it long ago. Back then, the child was still young, and she thought she was doing a good deed, so she tolerated it.

But as time went by, all the money, including her dowry, was gone, and she felt increasingly ashamed to ask her father for help.

It would be very difficult for a frail woman with a child and no money to survive.

So I kept enduring it.

Yesterday I gave her money to go out and buy some medicine for Wenrou to help her recover.
