Chapter 14 The Eleventh Blind Date

Phalaenopsis, azaleas, chrysanthemums, small potted orange trees, peach blossoms, and daisy fruit—even though the flowers and oranges were a bit pricey this year, the three of us still bought a wide variety and loaded them onto the tricycle. We heard someone nearby asking for a tricycle and asked the price. It cost 50 yuan for the four-kilometer journey. It seemed like our decision to drive the tricycle to the flower market had been a wise one.

After returning home, Su Jinyuan and Sang Yimei also came back. Su Zhihao and Li Yunling moved and arranged the flowers, and Su Tiantian hurried to the utility room to find a vase to put the peach blossoms in.

Seeing Su Tiantian coming back so quickly, Sang Yimei asked, "Tiantian, didn't you introduce that boy to the flower market with Third Sister-in-law? Where is he?"

Su Tiantian filled a vase with water while answering, "I was stood down. They said there were no cars, so I won't come."

Su Jinyuan said, "Maybe the other party doesn't want to continue to get along with him. Let's introduce another one to Tiantian."

Su Tiantian said: "My third sister-in-law called and said that Guang really didn't come because he didn't have a car."

Sang Yimei said: "This reason is really hard to accept. In today's society, it is so easy to call a taxi. Don't you even have a motorcycle or electric scooter at home?"

Su Tiantian said: "Whether you believe it or not, my third sister-in-law said that A Guang's brother drove away the motorcycle. A Guang only has one motorcycle at home."

Li Yunling put down the flowers in her hand and said, "A family with two brothers and only one motorcycle is not suitable for Sister Tiantian, right? A good motorcycle costs about 10,000 yuan, and a worse one would only cost 5,000 or 6,000 yuan. Can't you even afford a motorcycle?"

Su Zhihao said, "I'd better ask someone to introduce other boys to me. I don't need them to come from wealthy families, but they can't be too poor either."

Sang Yimei said, "I originally thought that Tiantian and that Ah Guang were going to the flower market and have lunch together, so I turned down a blind date that was supposed to be arranged at noon. I'm going to call and ask about another time."

Su Tiantian said, "Can we not go on a blind date today? I've already met ten guys in two days since I came back. I'm exhausted." Sang Yimei said, "No, let's continue with the blind date." Then she went to the kitchen to make a phone call.

Su Jinyuan took out a box of red envelopes and a stack of one-yuan bills and handed them to Su Tiantian: "Pack the red envelopes and hang them on the peach blossoms." What else could Su Tiantian do? She did as he was told.

Sang Yimei walked out of the kitchen and said, "This time, the introducer is Teacher Feng, the teacher from your aunt's neighbor's house. Teacher Feng said she has a cousin from the next village, about a 15-minute drive from home. He's the same age as you, has a bachelor's degree in computer science, and currently works as a computer repairman at a computer company. He's hardworking and meticulous, and earns a good income. You can go to your aunt's house for dinner later. Teacher Feng will bring her cousin to your aunt's house, and we'll all have dinner and meet below."

Su Tiantian looked at her phone and saw it was almost half past eleven. She said, "Are we going to my aunt's house now?"

Sang Yimei said, "Get there before midnight. It only takes five minutes to get to my aunt's house on your motorcycle. I'll get a chicken and a goose, and you can bring them to my aunt."

Su Tiantian waved her hand: "I won't take them. I'm afraid they will bite me."

Su Jinyuan said: "They won't bite. When I went to the market this morning to buy them, they had them slaughtered. It's almost Chinese New Year, and prices have gone up. It's 5 yuan to slaughter a chicken, and 10 yuan to slaughter a goose. They used to be only 2 yuan and 5 yuan."

Su Tiantian felt relieved after hearing this. She thought that many rural children had experienced being chased by geese.

A red plastic bag contained a chicken, and another contained a goose. Just as Su Tiantian was about to drive away, Su Jinyuan chased after her and said, "If your aunt and uncle bring the things back to you, don't take them." Su Tiantian smiled and said, "If I don't take them, my uncle will bring them to my house himself." Su Jinyuan said, "That's true. He always puts them down and leaves."

My aunt married into the family nearby and lived in the same village as Su Tiantian. The drive took less than five minutes and they arrived quickly. My cousin Ma Yiqiang was standing at the gate to the courtyard. Seeing Su Tiantian, he quickly walked to the side of the gate and motioned for her to drive into the courtyard. Su Tiantian turned off the engine, removed the key, and said to Ma Yiqiang, "Cousin, come and help me get it. This is for your mother. We're going to put it in the kitchen." Ma Yiqiang took the two red plastic bags, weighed them, and found them quite heavy. He said to Su Tiantian, "Cousin, check your WeChat. I guess you weren't able to see them while you were driving." Su Tiantian opened WeChat and saw three messages from Ma Yiqiang: "Cousin, my mom said you should come to my house for a blind date later." "Cousin, Teacher Feng and that guy are here. He's very short." "Cousin, wear some high heels." Looking at her feet in flat black boots, Su Tiantian didn't quite understand what Ma Yiqiang meant by asking her to wear high heels.

Su Tiantian walked into the living room. Seeing her arrival, her aunt called out, "Tiantian, come sit over here." Three people sat at the coffee table: her aunt, a middle-aged woman (presumably Teacher Feng), and a man. Her aunt beckoned Su Tiantian over to sit. The woman was stylishly dressed, with long, French-style waves, a vibrant, thin lipstick, a long red wool coat, a black sweater, and a red skirt. The man was a bit short and old, with large eyes and noticeable dark circles. He wore large glasses and a rather old-fashioned look. He wore a dark gray hooded fleece sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and black sneakers. He was said to be the same age as Su Tiantian, but he didn't look like one.

When Su Tiantian approached, she was about to say hello when her uncle came out and said, "Tiantian is here, dinner can begin, let's talk while we eat." Then he asked everyone to come to the dining table, and all six of them sat down and started eating. Su Tiantian lowered her head and ate slowly. Teacher Feng was very enthusiastic. Her aunt chatted with her and asked her questions, mainly about the two young people. The man rarely spoke, and so did Su Tiantian. Teacher Feng suddenly said loudly, "Tiantian, what do you think of my cousin Feng Wenchao? He is very filial, has a good job, and earns a high income. Whoever agrees to marry him will have a new house built immediately. Don't miss out on this good man." Her aunt quickly said, "This is the first time they've met, why would you talk so long-term."
