Chapter 9 The Eighth Blind Date

Sang Yimei sighed and said, "This so-called blind date is to repay a favor. If it weren't for Ajin's mother begging me many times, and we were old neighbors, I definitely wouldn't agree to let you go. Tiantian, do you remember Ajin?"

Su Tiantian said, "Brother Jin? The blind date I'm supposed to meet is Brother Jin. Isn't this a waste of time?"

Sang Yimei said, "I also think it's a waste of time, but his mother came to our house many times before you came home, saying that Ajin likes you very much, and that his family lent money to your father when our family was poor, so she had to let you go and meet him."

Su Zhihao, who had just walked out of the room, heard that Su Tiantian's blind date this time was A Jin, so he said, "I want to go too."

Sang Yimei looked at him and said, "What are you going to do?"

Su Zhihao said, "Don't you think the atmosphere will be better with me here? If there's anything you're not comfortable saying, I can say it too."

Li Yunling asked, "Who is that Ah Jin? Why do you have such expressions?"

Sang Yimei said: "It's the son of our old neighbor. He's 30 years old and unmarried. His mother is worried."

Su Zhihao said: "A good girl wouldn't want to marry him, and a bad girl, neither his mother nor he wants to marry her."

Li Yunling asked: "Why is it like this?"

Su Tiantian said: "Brother Jin's family is well-off, and he is tall, handsome, and intelligent. He owns a restaurant and does good business. Five years ago, he met a girl from out of town. She got pregnant, and Brother Jin's family was very happy. They wanted to quickly hold a wedding banquet, bought many gifts, and drove four hours to the girl's house to discuss the marriage. However, the girl's family made three demands. The first was a 200,000 yuan betrothal gift, which was not to be taken back. The second was that the first child, regardless of gender, would take the woman's surname. If the first child was a girl, the second child would also take the woman's surname. The third was that the man would live with the woman and buy a house near the girl's home, paying in full."

Li Yunling asked, "200,000 yuan is a lot for a betrothal gift? Isn't 10,000 or 20,000 yuan enough here? What happened later?"

Sang Yimei said, "There are also some with 30,000 or 50,000, but the bride usually has a lot of dowry. Aling, don't get me wrong, I'm not asking you for a dowry or anything."

Li Yunling said: "I know you don't mean anything, Auntie, and my mother said that we are marrying our daughter, not selling her. She will give me what I deserve, just like you did to Sister Tiantian."

Su Tiantian said, "As for the betrothal gift, Jin Ge's family could afford it, but the second and third requests were unacceptable. It almost seemed like a live-in son-in-law, and he would have to bring a substantial dowry. Jin Ge's family only had him as their only son, so his parents definitely wouldn't agree, and neither would Jin Ge. His restaurant business was doing well, and moving there would mean starting over. Later, the woman insisted on having the child, a girl, with his surname, and registered with her household. Jin Ge paid child support every month, and if he wanted to see the child, he had to go to her house."

Sang Yimei said, "I don't want Tiantian to marry him. Tonight is just a formality."

At about 6:30 in the evening after dinner, Li Yunling drove her motorcycle home by herself. Su Zhihao said he would pick her up to go to the flower market tomorrow.

Su Tiantian changed into a black plaid long coat, a white round-neck sweater, and black woolen wide-leg pants, which looked casual, comfortable, and stylish. Then the family of three decided to walk to the old house. It wasn't far anyway, only five or six minutes away.

Ajin's mother was very enthusiastic. She stood at the door and looked out. When she saw the three members of the Su family from afar, she hurried over to welcome them into the house.

Everyone sat down, poured tea, and opened boxes of snacks, but the atmosphere was indeed not very good. Everyone was familiar with each other and knew the situation of both parties, so it was actually a bit awkward. For the sake of her daughter's happiness, Sang Yimei, even though she felt embarrassed, still opened up the wounds of Ajin's family and asked Ajin: "It's almost Chinese New Year, Ajin, didn't you go to pick up your daughter to play?" Ajin's mother burst into tears when she heard this: "Her mother didn't let us bring her here, saying that we could go and see her if we wanted to. It's been so long since we've seen each other, and she doesn't even recognize me."

Ah Jin was obviously unhappy too. He was silent for a while and then said, "I'll take more videos for you next time."

Ajin's mother said, "I don't care. For so many years, no one has celebrated the New Year at my house, and none of my relatives have ever seen my granddaughter."

Ah Jin wanted to stop his mother from talking any further: "Mom, why are you saying this? Aunt Su is here."

A Jin's mother's eyes were slightly red. She wiped her tears with a tissue and said, "Everyone in the neighborhood knows about my family's affairs. Are you afraid that others will hear something? I want a granddaughter. Why don't you get married quickly and give me a grandson?"

Then, Ajin's mother took Su Tiantian's hand and said, "Tiantian, I've watched you grow up. You're really getting better and better. Our whole family likes you very much. Are you willing to be with Ajin?"

This was too direct. Su Tiantian appeared calm on the surface, but was stunned on the inside. Just as she was about to speak, Su Zhihao said, "Aunt, my sister won't be a stepmother."

Ajin's mother said anxiously, "As long as Tiantian is willing to be with Ajin, I won't take my granddaughter back. Just give her some money every month. I'll help take care of your children. We've been neighbors for so many years, you know us well, and my family isn't bad either."

Su Tiantian pulled Ajin's mother's hand away, lowered her head to hide the dissatisfaction in her eyes, and said, "Aunt, I just treat Brother Ajin as my brother."

Seeing this, Ah Jin stood up and said, "Can I take Tiantian for a walk in the vegetable garden behind our house?" Sang Yimei agreed, and Su Tiantian followed Ah Jin to the small vegetable garden. The light in the small garden was a little dim, and they could see lettuce, white radish, green onions, two bananas, and a lemon tree growing there, all looking good. The moonlight was not bright, but it cast a shadow on the two of them.
