Chapter 42 The Feast at Hongmen

"What?" asked the Marquis of Zhenbei, puzzled.

Ye Lanyin turned to face the Marquis of Zhenbei:

"How could that be the money that Zou's family has saved for their funerals?"

“My lord, Cousin Zou always says her husband is not here, but I have heard that Cousin Zou’s husband has always been here. She is a high-ranking official.”

"That amount of money is nothing to her; now, she is the envy of everyone in Bianjing."

"Besides, she's actually been living here all along. Her visit to visit relatives is probably just a cover; she's really here to steal things!"

Marquis Zhenbei's eyes widened in disbelief; he never expected that Zou Shuang'er would reveal his identity.

He looked somewhat guilty.

"But... did they say who it was?"

Ye Lanyin pondered for a moment, then shook her head and said, "That wasn't mentioned." She looked at the Marquis of Zhenbei with a puzzled expression.

"She's your cousin, Lord Marquis, don't you really know?"

"Cough, I've never heard her mention it. I always thought she was all alone." Marquis Zhenbei dared not look Ye Lanyin in the eye.

Ye Lanyin took in his guilty conscience and continued:

"My lord, I heard she has two sons, you didn't know that, did you?"

"Both sons revealed it?" The Marquis of Zhenbei couldn't help but ask anxiously, then abruptly shut his mouth and coughed: "What I mean is, how could the common people know about her private affairs?"

"What kind of private matter is this? We went out today, and it was the locals who told us. I reckon the whole area within a ten-mile radius knows about it now."

Upon hearing this, the Marquis of Zhenbei was thrown into turmoil, and the anger he had just suppressed flared up again.

Ye Lanyin secretly mocked.

Are you scared?

She insisted on pretending not to know.

"Oh well, this is their family matter, my lord. You shouldn't meddle too much, lest their husbands have objections."

"Okay...okay," the Marquis of Zhenbei replied absentmindedly.

Then, Ye Lanyin sighed again: "Actually, Cousin Zou is really something. I was just joking, but she actually took it seriously."

“Yesterday, when she was bidding, I told her in the middle that if she didn’t want to, she could give up. But she has a high-ranking official husband and doesn’t care about that little bit of silver. Who knew that she would bid a thousand taels at once.”

"Later, I said I wouldn't buy it."

Ye Lanyin shook her head, then stood up and looked at the Zhenbei Marquis, whose face was ashen.

"A thousand taels to buy a bolt of cloth? Cousin Zou is not as shrewd as the women of Bianjing. What ordinary legitimate daughter would spend so much money?"

"What a spendthrift woman! She's lazy, greedy, and dishonest. She claims to have a husband, but I've never even seen him. I wonder if she's someone's mistress."

"Given his wife's character, I reckon the man isn't any better."

"If you ask me, her behavior is like that of a petty thief, and she dresses like a caged bird all the time. It's just bad luck to talk about her!"

Mother, you're making me laugh so hard!

Hahaha, that's a feint attack!

[Wow, that's so kind of my mom.]

"Never mind, let's not talk about it anymore." Ye Lanyin blinked and asked casually. "My lord, would you like to eat something else?"

"No need!" Marquis Zhenbei was furious at Ye Lanyin's words.

Ironically, he didn't dare to utter a single word in response.

Realizing his words had sounded like a roar, the Marquis of Zhenbei quickly explained, "Madam, what I meant was, I've already eaten. You all enjoy your meal. I have other matters to attend to, so I'll be leaving now."

"Okay." Ye Lanyin said to his back.

Hua Xin and Hua Mei stood behind their wives, dumbfounded.

He originally thought Ye Lanyin would be scolded by him, but unexpectedly the Marquis fled in disgrace.

"Madam, when did you start speaking so playfully?" Hua Xin said involuntarily.

Naughty?

She took it as a compliment from the maid.

Ye Lanyin chuckled and reached out to stroke Lin Wanwan. "When did it happen? Ever since I gave birth to Wanwan, I feel like my heart has returned to the time when I was a young lady in my boudoir."

No wonder she did it.

My daughter's heartfelt words are filled with joy and childlike innocence.

She also contracted the virus to some extent.

Seeing that his mother wasn't upset, Lin Rui'an's worries lessened considerably.

The Marquis of Zhenbei's frustration was entirely his own doing.

He knew about what happened yesterday, and he was afraid that the Marquis of Zhenbei would blame his mother, so he stayed by her side all day.

"Wow, Mom, my goodness, you're amazing!" Lin Chang'an exclaimed with admiration.

"Alright, stop being so talkative. Eat up, and we'll have our reunion dinner tonight."

"Yes, Mother."

At this moment, news of Zou Shuang'er being beaten by officials at an inn quickly spread throughout Bianjing.

The people were secretly speculating about who it was.

This matter has become the talk of the town for the people of Bianjing these past few days.

Lin Wanwan licked her fingers, wishing she could bite off the skin too.

"Waaaaah..."

I bit my finger.

[Waaaaah...]

Even while crying, she showed no intention of letting go of her little mouth.

It's just that her body is so weak these days; she's clearly in pain, but she just won't pull it out.

She even continued to bite harder with her small mouth.

Hearing her cries, the group looked over together.

Ye Lanyin lowered her head and hurriedly pulled her finger out of her mouth.

Everyone burst into laughter.

At night, the reunion dinner for the Little New Year finally arrived.

The Marquis of Zhenbei was so hungry that his stomach was practically sticking to his back. He picked up his bowl and chopsticks and began to eat, completely ignoring the fact that the dishes had not yet been served.

Ye Lanyin covered her mouth and chuckled.

She did it on purpose, at lunchtime.

Judging from the fact that he kept clutching his stomach and swallowing, he hadn't eaten.
