Chapter 60 Meeting is fate

"No, it's normal for children to cry. Why should I go and see?"

Yan Cheng slowly put down his hands and slowly poured himself a cup of tea.

He muttered to himself, in Leng Yan's mind, was he the kind of person who was extremely curious about everything?

Leng Yan raised his eyebrows and smiled slightly, his expression seemed to silently say "That's what I think."

Yan Cheng glared at him angrily, turned around and walked inside angrily.

When he reached the bed, he lay down on it immediately, pulled the quilt over him and turned around a few times. His whole body seemed to be wrapped in a cocoon, and he curled up in the quilt and sulked.

He admitted that he was a little curious, but he wouldn't be so curious as to go and find out what was going on just because he heard a child crying.

Isn't it just a little kid crying outside? He would never pay any attention to it, absolutely not!

However……

Yan Cheng tossed and turned and couldn't fall asleep, rolling back and forth in bed several times.

Suddenly, he opened his eyes abruptly, crawled out from under the quilt, turned over and sat up, put on his shoes swiftly, and walked towards the door with his head down.

Leng Yan raised his eyebrows, with a faint smile on his face, he slowly stood up and followed him.

Yan Cheng's room was on the side of the second floor. The crying child was squatting at the end of the corridor. His voice was low, like a cat's meow, and trembling.

Yan Cheng came out with a lantern and saw the small figure at a glance.

"Kid, why are you crying?"

In the middle of the night, the startled crying of the child disturbed people's sleep.

"Woo woo, Master..."

The sudden voice of the young man startled the child, and he fell to the ground with a thud, and the tears in his eyes almost fell out of fear.

He looked up confusedly, his face full of panic.

The corridor at night is particularly dim, with weak lights coming on.

The child first saw the intricately patterned and gorgeous brocade robe, and he couldn't help but calm down and think about how many of himself this robe was worth.

When I looked up again, I saw a young face.

The child had never been to school and did not know how to use those fancy words to describe the outstanding appearance of the visitor. He could only struggle to think of the words "very good-looking" in his mind.

——The clothes this brother was wearing were made of exquisite materials that he had never seen before, and they looked very handsome. He must have come from a wealthy family.

However, as soon as this thought came to mind, the child seemed to have thought of something, and his expression changed visibly.

The little face, which already looked pale from crying, now looked even paler. She sniffed and was about to cry again.

"Sir, am I disturbing your sleep? Can you please not go to the shopkeeper? I can get this month's salary if I work for two more days."

The child apologized with trembling lips, his voice full of fear and anxiety.

"Monthly wages? You work in this inn?"

Yan Cheng carefully inferred the child's age from his appearance and body shape, probably around six or seven. This inn actually employed child laborers, how outrageous!

"My mother is sick, and I need to earn money to take her to the clinic. Other shops are unwilling to take me in because I am too young, but the innkeeper is the only one who is willing to take me in. He lets me do odd jobs in the inn and pays me one hundred copper coins a month.

In a couple of days the shopkeeper will give me my monthly allowance, and then I can take my mother to the clinic. I beg you to forgive me this time, and don't let the shopkeeper drive me away."

The child begged for mercy timidly, his voice full of pleading.

Not only do they employ child laborers, but the monthly wages they pay are also extremely low.

If you take this mere hundred copper coins to the clinic for treatment, you will probably only be able to see the basics.

But what does this have to do with him?

"Why are you crying here?"

This was the key issue that Yan Cheng was most concerned about. In the quiet night, the child's crying kept lingering in his ears, making it impossible for him to fall asleep.

"The woodshed where I live is leaking. It rained just now and all the firewood in the woodshed is wet. Brother Xiaoer said it was all my fault and asked me to buy some dry firewood tomorrow, but I have no money and cannot afford to buy firewood. Woo woo."

As the child spoke, he couldn't help crying again.

Yan Cheng's eyelids twitched at the sudden crying. "Isn't it just to buy firewood? I'll give you money, go buy it tomorrow. Just one piece, and don't cry at my doorstep."

If you want to cry, go somewhere else and don't bother him here.

Yan Cheng searched his body but couldn't find his wallet, so he turned and reached out to Leng Yan. Leng Yan understood and put his wallet in his hand.

Yan Cheng took it and flipped through it. He saw only two or three copper coins inside, which was not enough to buy firewood. He picked up a piece of silver at random and put it into the child's hand.

"Okay, go to bed! The child should be asleep by this time."

The child was well-educated. Although he was very tempted by the change in his hand, he remembered what his mother once said: "One should not be too greedy, otherwise one's life will be in danger."

So he gritted his teeth, wanted to say no, and return the silver to Yan Cheng.

Yan Cheng didn't give him this chance, he threw the purse to Leng Yan, yawned, and waved the child away. The child kept looking back, but Yan Cheng glared at him fiercely several times.

"Now you can go back to sleep."

After Yan Cheng entered the room, he saw Leng Yan was about to follow in, so he quickly raised his hand to stop him.

"Leng Yan, go back to sleep. You must be tired after walking all day. Don't guard me anymore. It's not like I don't have the ability to protect myself."

"I'll sleep at your place."

"Can't you sleep in your own bed? Why do you have to squeeze in with me?"
