Chapter 64 The Car Crashed
The weather was unusually nice that day, so Wu Xinyue got up early to buy breakfast and ate with Lin Xiyin when she returned.
The boss is great in every way, except that his schedule is too regular; he goes to bed before 10 p.m.
Wu Xinyue followed suit and managed to get two early nights, which was rare for her. She's been in great spirits these past two days.
The defense was held in a small conference room. When she arrived, Wu Xinyue was extremely nervous: "I think I saw our vice dean!"
"What's wrong?" Lin Xiyin asked.
“He’s a notoriously strict professor!” Wu Xinyue said. “Oh my god, thank goodness it wasn’t my defense. When I saw his face, I was so scared I couldn’t speak.”
Today, they are not the only ones whose projects need to be defended.
Huo Yunying went to negotiate; they were third in line.
There are two more ahead of us. If nothing goes wrong, we should be able to finish by noon.
Lin Xiyin and Wu Xinyue sat outside waiting when her phone rang.
When she picked it up, she was surprised to find that it was sent to her by Huo Xianyang.
He said: Come to my office, it's urgent.
Lin Xiyin frowned and replied to him: What is it?
Huo Xianyang replied: Let's talk in person.
Lin Xiyin knew that Huo Xianyang wouldn't joke around easily; he was different from Chi Tianlin.
She had no choice but to ask Wu Xinyue, "Can I leave now?"
Wu Xinyue said, "It's fine if you don't defend your thesis and leave. If anything happens, I'll send you a message."
"OK."
Lin Xiyin said something to the other team members and then turned and left.
Huo Yunying watched her retreating figure and scoffed.
Lin Xiyin went to Huo Xianyang's law firm, entered the small building, and walked upstairs as if she knew the way well.
She knocked on Huo Xianyang's office door, and when the door opened from the inside, she saw Chi Tianlin's face.
Her face remained expressionless as she simply asked, "Where is Huo Xianyang?"
"We're in a meeting." Chi Tianlin stepped aside. "Please come in."
Lin Xiyin went into the office and sat down on the sofa.
Chi Tianlin sat opposite her and poured her a cup of tea.
Lin Xiyin said, "Thank you, but I don't want to drink."
"Don't mention it." Chi Tianlin placed the tea in front of her. "What have you been busy with these past few days?"
Lin Xiyin still remembers that day in the neighborhood when she said she didn't deserve to be his friend. The man said she was being sarcastic and then left in anger.
Judging from today's appearance, it seems like your anger has subsided.
If he didn't say anything, Lin Xiyin wouldn't be foolish enough to bring it up herself.
Lin Xiyin felt that there was nothing wrong with talking about her schooling.
She said, "I'm busy with school matters."
"I haven't congratulated you yet," Chi Tianlin said. "I hope you can graduate normally."
Many doctoral students will extend their studies, a fact that is widely known.
It's not hard to get a doctorate; the hard part is graduating normally.
Lin Xiyin nodded: "Thank you for your kind words."
"You must have had excellent grades when you were in school, right?" Chi Tianlin asked.
Lin Xiyin said, "It's alright."
Chi Tianlin said, "No wonder he didn't want to be friends with me. I didn't like studying, and my grades were consistently the worst in the class back then."
Lin Xiyin wanted to explain, but after thinking about it, she decided against it, realizing there was nothing to say to Chi Tianlin.
"Huo Xianyang is in a meeting," Chi Tianlin said again. "I wonder when it will end."
Lin Xiyin asked him, "When did you arrive? Do you know why he called me here?"
She couldn't keep waiting like this.
Chi Tianlin said, "I arrived early this morning. But isn't this preferential treatment a bit unfair? I had to make a bet with you to invite you out. You came as soon as Huo Xianyang sent me a message."
Lin Xiyin reminded him, "You were the one who suggested the bet."
"That's because you're ignoring me."
Lin Xiyin shut up.
She couldn't argue with Chi Tianlin.
Don't bother.
"Since we're just killing time anyway, how about we get together for lunch?"
Lin Xiyin also wanted to fulfill the bet as soon as possible, so she nodded and said, "Okay."
"But today's encounter was by chance, so it can't be counted in the bet."
Lin Xiyin's expression immediately changed: "Then forget it."
She wanted to go back to school at noon.
Chi Tianlin was furious: "Don't you want to get to know me better at all?"
"There are probably countless people who want to get to know President Chi better, so why should President Chi waste his time on me?"
"I don't care about those people!" Chi Tianlin said angrily, "I think you're doing this on purpose!"
“Yes, I use the tactic of feigning weakness to lure the enemy into a trap, retreating to advance, and casting a long line to catch a big fish. That’s the kind of person I am,” Lin Xiyin said. “So, has President Chi seen through my true colors?”
Chi Tianlin scoffed: "You think that by saying this, I'll do as you please, hate you, and stay away from you?"
Lin Xiyin fell silent. She subconsciously picked up her teacup, but halfway through, she remembered that she was pregnant and decided it was best not to drink tea.
She put it down again.
"What's wrong?" Chi Tianlin asked; "Don't you like black tea?"
Lin Xiyin nodded: "I'll pour myself some water."
"Do you want to have lunch together or not?" Chi Tianlin asked reluctantly with a sour face, "We can invite Huo Xianyang."
Lin Xiyin said, "I might not be free at noon, I might have to go to school."
“That’s not what you just said…”
Before Chi Tianlin could finish speaking, Lin Xiyin's phone rang.
She answered the phone: "Xinyue, what's wrong?"
Wu Xinyue's voice was urgent: "Sister, where are you? Come back quickly! There's been a problem with our defense!"
Lin Xiyin paused for a moment, then stood up and asked as she walked out, "Don't rush, tell me slowly."
Today's defense, which was originally scheduled to be conducted by the department head, was changed to be conducted by the college head.
The vice dean is extremely serious and meticulous about academics. It might not sound nice to call him nitpicky, but he is indeed very demanding.
“We failed the first two projects, so the atmosphere was already very tense,” Wu Xinyue said. “When our group went in, the boss suddenly stopped us and asked Huo Yunying how she calculated a certain number. Huo Yunying stammered and couldn’t answer, so the boss got angry…”
The vice dean was privately called the "Great Demon King" by the students, which shows how terrifying he was.
Wu Xinyue continued, "I'm sneaking out to call you now... Huo Yunying is so scared she's crying, she can't even continue her defense. The vice dean is still inside banging on the table, saying we're a bunch of trash..."
Lin Xiyin said, "I'm coming right now!"
Chi Tianlin followed behind her: "What's wrong with you? Where are you going?"
Lin Xiyin kept walking: "I have to go back to school, it's urgent."
"I'll go with you!" Chi Tianlin said. "What if I can help?"
Lin Xiyin didn't have time to joke with him: "You can't help me."
But as soon as she went downstairs and unlocked the door, Chi Tianlin got into the passenger seat.
Lin Xiyin had no time to argue with him, so she could only ignore him, start the car, and drive towards the school.
A moment later, Chi Tianlin said, "Your car is too small. Let's get another one."
Lin Xiyin ignored him.
She wasn't rich, and couldn't do what he did—talk about buying a car in the casual tone of someone buying a cup of milk tea.
In fact, she is currently in debt.
"Pei Muyi is too stingy."
Although she wants to divorce Pei Muye, this matter has nothing to do with Pei Muye.
Lin Xiyin explained, "This car was bought for me by my parents, so I've grown attached to it."
“You don’t need to defend him,” Chi Tianlin said. “If you have feelings for him, you can keep it in the garage and drive it occasionally. But in terms of both driving performance and safety, as Pei Muyi’s wife, you shouldn’t be driving a car like this. Doesn’t Pei Muyi feel ashamed?”
Lin Xiyin said, "He asked me, but I refused, and he hasn't said anything since."
"In the end, you're the one who's foolish," Chi Tianlin said. "Pei Muyi is stingy too. He would have bought it for you directly; I don't believe you would have refused."
Lin Xiyin said, "Stop talking about him, we're getting a divorce."
"Good riddance." Chi Tianlin laughed. "So, tell me, what happened at school?"
Lin Xiyin briefly explained the situation; there was nothing to keep secret anyway.
Chi Tianlin laughed in exasperation: "So you were the one who arranged everything, and then she went up there to show off, only to have it all go wrong?"
Lin Xiyin said, "I roughly guessed that would happen. Actually, it's nothing, she just has a bad temper and has been spoiled by her family."
“It’s only natural for her family to spoil her, but once she’s out of the house, who should spoil her? Why be polite to someone like her?” Chi Tianlin said. “You shouldn’t have let her go to the defense.”
Lin Xiyin said, "After this incident, she learned her lesson."
The two arrived at the school quickly. Lin Xiyin hurried to the place where she was defending her thesis, and Chi Tianlin followed behind her the whole time.
We arrived at the conference room for the defense.
When Wu Xinyue saw her, it was like seeing a savior: "Sister! You've finally arrived! The dean is still scolding! Huo Yunying is crying so hard she can't stop!"
She only noticed Chi Tianlin after she finished speaking, and was momentarily stunned by his beauty.
But at this moment, there's no time to care about anything else.
She pulled Lin Xiyin into the conference room.
Chi Tianlin, with his hands in his pockets, followed slowly.
The vice president's voice sounded strong and energetic.
"Is this your attitude? Is this what you've produced?"
"Today, every single one of you, if you don't give me a reasonable explanation, you can forget about graduating!"
"Academic work is not child's play! If all of you have this kind of attitude, Ocean University will not tolerate students like you!"
Wu Xinyue was terrified.
Lin Xiyin was also stunned, not expecting things to escalate to such a serious level.
Wu Xinyue couldn't help but feel worried for Lin Xiyin, and even wanted to pull her away to stop her from going over.
Lin Xiyin patted her hand and took a few steps forward: "Hello, Dean."
"What are you doing!" The vice dean looked over angrily: "Who are you?!"
"I'm here to defend my dissertation," Lin Xiyin said calmly. "I'm Professor Ji's doctoral student."
"You're going to defend the thesis? Then who is she? Who exactly is in charge of the defense?!"
Lin Xiyin explained, "I did some of the data, which she might not be aware of."
"Don't know? Is this your attitude? Sending someone who doesn't know anything to give a response?"
Lin Xiyin said, "Please give me a chance."
The vice dean slammed the documents in his hand on the table: "For Ji Mingtang's sake, you come!"
Lin Xiyin lifted her leg and walked towards the projector.
Huo Yunying's eyes were red from crying, but the look in her eyes as she looked at Lin Xiyin was filled with hatred.
She made a huge fool of herself today. Students from the other two programs were there, and in front of so many people, the vice dean berated her mercilessly.
She didn't understand that formula or that string of data at all.
It must have been Lin Xiyin who deliberately sabotaged her and made her look bad!
