Chapter 91 I Have No Heart
It was because I had just touched Lin Xiyin's skin that I had a physiological reaction.
Pei Muye ignored her completely, filled another basin with cold water, and continued to wipe her down.
He placed his large hand on Lin Xiyin's forehead and felt the temperature drop slightly.
He put another towel on it, and couldn't resist touching Lin Xiyin's cheek again.
Just as he was about to get up, his hand was grabbed.
Lin Xiyin was still not fully awake. She grabbed his large hand, pressed it against her cheek, and rubbed it comfortably.
Pei Muye dared not move, nor was he willing to move.
Lin Xiyin hadn't looked at him properly in ages.
Let alone letting her touch it.
During her time in the hospital, although she agreed to stay and take care of him, her words and actions always kept her distance from him.
Let him know what unfamiliarity and indifference mean.
Now, Lin Xiyin took his hand.
Pei Muye sat by the hospital bed, holding her hand, reluctant to let go.
When Lin Xiyin woke up, she opened her eyes and found everything was dark. She blinked and then saw a dim yellow night light.
"woke up?"
The man's deep voice was somewhat hoarse.
Lin Xiyin's mind went blank.
What place is this?
What is Pei Muye doing here?
Her last memories were of her dormitory.
She had lunch with Wu Xinyue and Li Xingzhi, then went back to the dormitory for a nap.
how……
Pei Muye pressed the call button, and the doctor arrived quickly and turned on the room's main light.
Pei Muye placed his palm over Lin Xiyin's eyes.
"It's too bright, close your eyes first."
Lin Xiyin subconsciously closed her eyes, and after a few seconds, slowly opened them.
This is a hospital.
The doctor gave her a simple physical examination and said, "Your fever has gone down a bit, you can eat something now."
After the doctor left, she looked at Pei Muye and asked, "Am I sick?"
"Your fever is almost 40 degrees Celsius," Pei Muye said. "Are you feeling unwell anywhere right now?"
The congee that I had ordered to be delivered earlier has been kept warm.
Pei Muye took it and sat by the bed to feed her.
"Hungry."
Lin Xiyin felt her stomach was rumbling with hunger, so hungry she could eat a whole cow.
"Have some porridge first." Pei Muye held the porridge to her lips. "You can eat other things after you're done."
Lin Xiyin sat halfway down and reached out to take the bowl from his hand: "I can do it myself."
“You took care of me like this when I was sick before,” Pei Muyi persisted. “I’ll feed you.”
"No need," Lin Xiyin insisted on eating it herself.
Pei Muyi had no choice but to let go.
Lin Xiyin ate about half a bowl, but couldn't eat anymore. She felt her mouth was bland and wanted to eat meat.
Roasted meat, stir-fried meat, braised pork.
Any kind of meat is fine.
But she didn't want to say anything to Pei Muye.
"Aren't you going to eat?" Pei Muye took the food. "Then drink more water."
Lin Xiyin didn't even want to drink water. She forced down a few sips and then closed her eyes.
“I called you, and your classmate answered. He said you had a fever,” Pei Muye explained from the side. “So I went over and brought you to the hospital.”
Lin Xiyin said thank you, her tone indifferent and distant.
Pei Muye's lips moved, but after looking at her haggard face, he ultimately said nothing.
"Tell me what you want, and tell me where you feel unwell." Pei Muye tucked the blanket around her. "The doctor said you need to be observed in the hospital for at least three days."
Lin Xiyin opened her eyes and looked at him: "Could you help me hire a caregiver?"
"I can take care of you."
"It's inconvenient," Lin Xiyin said directly. "Help me hire a caregiver, or I can hire one myself."
"Soft..."
"Don't call me that." Lin Xiyin's voice was icy: "Our relationship isn't that good."
"I'll take care of you." Pei Muye's mind was firm: "When you're better, I still have something to tell you."
"There's nothing between us."
"You take good care of yourself, I'm going out... to make a phone call."
Pei Muye got up and left.
Lin Xiyin looked around but couldn't see her phone.
Pei Muyi returned quickly, and Lin Xiyin asked him, "Where's my phone?"
“It should be in the dormitory,” Pei Muye said. “You had a high fever at the time, and I didn’t have time to get it.”
"What time is it now?"
Pei Muye glanced at his watch: "It's almost twelve o'clock."
Lin Xiyin closed her eyes again.
Pei Muye asked her, "Are you going to sleep? If you are, I'll turn off the light."
Lin Xiyin shrank back down: "Sleep."
She belatedly realized, and sat up abruptly: "Where are my pants?"
"You have a high fever, we need to use alcohol to wipe your body down to lower your temperature," Pei Muyi explained. "Your pants are off. Do you want to put them back on?"
His expression and tone were very natural, as if taking off her pants was no big deal.
Lin Xiyin felt stifled, but didn't know what to say.
They've done the most intimate things together, so what's a little bit of taking off their pants?
She wouldn't be so dramatic as to hold a grudge against him over this.
But her complexion wasn't good either.
Seeing that Lin Xiyin turned her face away and didn't speak, Pei Muyi had no choice but to say again: "I was just wiping her body, I didn't have any other thoughts."
"It's getting late, you should go back and rest too," Lin Xiyin said. "Please find me a caregiver, thank you."
Pei Muye didn't respond to her words, but only said, "I'm turning off the lights, you can rest now."
The room quickly darkened, with only a small nightlight remaining.
Lin Xiyin closed her eyes and heard rustling sounds, then there was no more movement.
She had a fever and was in a coma, sleeping from a little after 1 a.m. until now, but she's not sleepy anymore.
His mind wandered, sometimes thinking about the Lin family, sometimes about Pei Muye's motives.
The last thing that lingered in her mind was the data she was organizing.
She didn't know how much time had passed when she heard a noise beside her—very light footsteps.
Lin Xiyin closed her eyes, pretending not to hear.
The voice grew closer, and then a warm, dry palm landed on her forehead.
Lin Xiyin forced herself to maintain even breathing.
What on earth is Pei Muyi up to in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?
His hand left her forehead, and Lin Xiyin had just breathed a sigh of relief when she sensed his breath approaching.
Pei Muye, carrying a faint, cool fragrance, drew ever closer.
Lin Xiyin couldn't help but feel an urge to push him away.
I don't want him to be so close to me.
But she was pretending to be asleep, and didn't want him to think she was awake.
She didn't want to talk to him.
The next second, his breath drew closer, and then something soft and warm touched her forehead.
Pei Muye kissed her.
Lin Xiyin raised her hand and touched the spot where he had kissed her, pretending to be disturbed. She then took the opportunity to turn over and face away from him.
She thought that this would make Pei Muyi stop.
But who knew that the next second, a wall would be pressed against his back.
Pei Muye got into bed, right behind her, and reached out to pull her into his arms.
Lin Xiyin could no longer pretend. She raised her hand to block him, then sat up and said angrily, "What are you doing!"
Pei Muye didn't expect that he would wake her up; he had been very careful.
He quickly said, "I'm afraid you'll get a fever again..."
"There's no need for this!" Lin Xiyin said, her voice filled with dissatisfaction. "Get out of my way!"
"Okay, I'll go down."
Pei Muye was afraid she would get angry, so he quickly got out of bed.
He was genuinely worried that Lin Xiyin might have another fever, and that he hadn't noticed it immediately, so he wanted to get closer to her.
"I didn't mean anything by it..."
Pei Muyi wanted to explain further, but Lin Xiyin had already lay back down, covered her head with the blanket, and refused to communicate with him.
"Don't do that." Pei Muyi reached out and pulled the blanket down. "It'll be stuffy. I'm right here. If you feel uncomfortable, be sure to tell me."
Lin Xiyin remained silent.
Pei Muyi remained silent.
Lin Xiyin fell into a deep sleep after an unknown amount of time.
Pei Muye sat by the bedside and stayed with her all night.
He was thinking about how he should get along with Lin Xiyin in the future.
Yesterday, Pei Muyi met Lu Zuofan and his young model girlfriend, and he felt like his eyes were about to go blind.
Lu Zuofan and the young model were being intimate, oblivious to everyone else. Judging from their expressions, it seemed like they were deeply in love and couldn't live without each other.
They say those sticky, intimate words without any restraint.
If Pei Muyi hadn't had enough self-control and genuinely wanted to learn, he would have left long ago.
During the meal, the young model went to the restroom, and Pei Muyi asked Lu Zuofan with a complicated expression, "Are you this affectionate with every girlfriend you've ever had?"
“Of course,” Lu Zuofan said. “When I was dating them, I genuinely liked them.”
"If you like someone so much, how could you bear to break up with them?"
Pei Muye felt that Lu Zuofan's longest relationship with a girlfriend lasted no more than two months.
Just one day, no, even a second ago they were deeply in love and inseparable, and the next second they said they wanted to break up and turned their backs on each other.
Lu Zuofan said, "Because my affection isn't genuine at all. I know they don't really like me either; they just like my money and the gifts I buy them. To me, they're like a watch or a car. If you don't like them anymore, you can just throw them away. Would you really feel bad about it? Oh, sometimes, they might not even be as valuable as a watch or a car."
For wealthy people like them, a watch or a car is something they can casually give as a gift to a friend at the dinner table.
Of course I wouldn't feel bad.
But Pei Muye still didn't understand.
They are human beings, living, breathing people, with thoughts, feelings, joys, sorrows, and everything in between.
“Because they have no heart.” Lu Zuofan took a drag of his cigarette and exhaled a smoke ring. “I have no heart either. They want money, I want happiness. It’s like buying something, money and goods exchanged, neither of us owes the other anything.”
Pei Muye sat by Lin Xiyin's bedside and finally understood what it felt like to fall in love.
Lu Zuofan always handled things with ease and composure, no matter what he did.
Unlike him, Lin Xiyin's single action or word could cause him serious injury and heartbreak.
The pain he experienced was something Lin Xiyin had probably gone through before.
Moreover, it happened more than once.
Whenever he thought of this, Pei Muye felt even more tormented.
He decided that no matter what it took, he would keep Lin Xiyin by his side and not let him leave.
He wanted to clarify those misunderstandings one by one.
He did not cheat on his wife, nor did he have any ambiguous relationships with other women.
The only person he ever loved was Lin Xiyin.
He had to tell Lin Xiyin all of this.
He would speak once Lin Xiyin's condition improved.
