Chapter 16 Lingling keeps crying

As soon as these words were spoken, the daughters widened their eyes and looked at Guan Zhiyi in front of them.

"Miss Lu, is this true?"

Lu Baohua, facing the gazes of the other daughters, whispered, "It was my grandmother who verbally arranged the engagement."

The daughters discussed, "When did the verbal engagement made by Grandmother become a finalized marriage?"

"I heard that Prince Lu has always been filial and would agree to an engagement if Madam Lu arranged it. What's this girl's background? To be able to get engaged to Prince Lu is like finding a treasure."

"I know her. I've seen her at Xue Bo's house. She's the sixth daughter of the Guan family."

"Is it Miss Guan Liu who chose to marry Guan Zhiyi? No wonder, the Miss Guan family has always been known for her virtue. I heard that she was only sixteen years old and had been the housekeeper for two years. She is indeed worthy of being the Lu family's headmistress."

"His background is somewhat inferior, but he married a virtuous woman, and she is a good match for Prince Lu."

Qi Yuning sneered, "So it's Master Lu's future wife. How disrespectful!"

Guan Zhiyi just revealed her engagement in a hurry. She had no choice. She had been planning for the marriage for so long and she would never let Qi Yuning snatch away the ideal husband she had been planning for for so long.

Even though Lu Ze and Qi Yuning have a daughter, they have not yet married. She must not miss this good opportunity.

After the prince and Qi Yu'an took their seats, the lunch began.

The Crown Prince, Princess Pingrou, and her husband Lu sat at the main seat, followed by Madam Lu, Lu Ze, Qi Yu'an, and Qi Yuning who sat at the main table.

Qi Yuning stood up and toasted, "This glass of wine is for His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and His Royal Highness the Princess. My daughter has been granted the title of Princess. Thank you both for your honor."

Zhao Chong smiled and said, "Princess Qi, you are too polite."

Zhao Chong drank the wine in the cup in one gulp.

Princess Pingrou smiled and said, "I love Lingling very much."

Princess Pingrou glared at Lu Ze after she finished speaking. If Lu Ze hadn't been so foolish as to keep it a secret from her for so long, she would have been able to show off this well-behaved grandson in public.

Madam Lu said with a smile, "Princess, no matter how good Lingling is, she is not Ze'er's daughter. I have chosen a marriage for Ze'er. If they get married by the end of the year, you might be able to hold your grandson by the end of next year."

Princess Pingrou frowned and said, "Mother-in-law..."

Lu Ze repeatedly said: "Grandma..."

Qi Yuning didn't wait for the mother and son to speak, and said, "Is it Miss Guan? Miss Guan just said that she was the wife-to-be of Mr. Lu. I didn't recognize Miss Guan as Mr. Lu's fiancée and even called her a nobody. This glass of wine is for Mr. Lu. I hope Mr. Lu won't mind my disrespect to your fiancée!"

When Lu Ze saw Qi Yuning holding up the wine glass, he frowned. What do you mean by disrespectful? Qi Yuning had never shown him any respect.

Lu Ze said, "I don't have a wife yet, Grandmother. I've made it clear to the Guan family. I've already given the Sixth Miss Guan a thank you gift for saving you, but a verbal engagement doesn't count!"

Princess Pingrou listened to Qi Yuning's words and said repeatedly: "Yes, Yuning, you misunderstood. When it comes to marriage, parents have the final say. Ze'er's marriage is naturally decided by Prince Consort Lu and me. We haven't even arranged a marriage for Ze'er yet!"

Old Madam Lu's face turned dark, and she gasped in anger as she looked at Princess Pingrou.

Qi Yuning smiled and said, "I see."

Zhao Chong looked at his sister, then at her mother-in-law, and said with a smile, "I'm afraid it's not up to your sister and brother-in-law to decide Ze'er's marriage. Father and mother have always loved Ze'er, so the princess you choose for him must at least have their approval."

Princess Pingrou smiled and said, "My royal brother is right. Father and mother have always loved Ze'er. Ze'er's marriage must be granted by father."

Old Madam Lu was even more angry, but because these two were royal highnesses, she could only hold her anger in her heart.

No one at the main table knew about the conflict, but Guan Zhiyi, who was at the same table with the Lu sisters, received a lot of goodwill from the rich girls.

Guan Zhiyi thought that not all daughters of wealthy families were as contemptuous as Princess Qi.

By the time the banquet was over, the news of Prince Lu's engagement with the daughter of the Guan family had spread among the guests.

Lu Ze frowned when he heard many people coming to congratulate him, and explained that he was not engaged yet, but in the ears of others, it just meant that he was not officially engaged.

Lu Ze had never met Guan Zhiyi and had never had any feelings for her before, but she knew that he had come to cancel the verbal engagement, and still rashly took the initiative to acknowledge the unfounded marriage. Lu Ze was extremely disgusted.

Qi Yu'an had also heard the gossip. He glanced at Lu Ze coldly and said to the Crown Prince beside him, "Your Highness, I'm away from Shengjing for a while. I'd like to trouble you to help my sister find a marriage, but there's no need for someone with the surname Lu."

Zhao Chong said, "Okay."

As Zhao Chong and Lu Ze left the palace, they said, "It seems Yun'er's becoming a nun has infuriated the Qi family. I saw Prince Qi's eyes just now, and it looked like he wanted to kill you. What's going on with Princess Qi's child? How come he looks so much like you?"

Lu Ze said slowly: "Lingling is my daughter."

Zhao Chong raised an eyebrow and said, "You and Princess Qi used to get along well when you were little. I often saw her following you around and calling you Brother Ze. But later on, you two stopped playing together. When did you have a daughter?"

Lu Ze also used Qi Yuning's explanation to the Queen to explain to Zhao Chong, "We were young and ignorant back then, so we got together, and later we separated."

Zhao Chong's voice was filled with emotion and joy as he asked, "I see. Now, are you responsible for Princess Qi?"

"I want to take responsibility. Princess Qi seems to still have some resentment towards our Lu family because of Lu Yun's becoming a monk."

Zhao Chong said, "It's a blessing that Yun'er became a monk. If Yun'er hadn't become a monk, would you have just watched your child's mother become your brother's wife?"
