Chapter 56 A Friendship That Runs in Both Directions

More than half a month has passed since my last visit to Kasuga Garden.

These days, Jin Wuyou arrives at her door on time every day, always appearing before her to greet her when she has free time after her afternoon nap.

"Miss, Miss Jin has arrived."

"Okay, tell her to wait a moment, I'll be right out."

Fang Ruotang changed her clothes and went to meet the person.

"Your Excellency, Imperial Preceptor."

We met every day, and I treated everyone with utmost respect.

Fang Ruotang had said more than once that there was no need for such a grand ceremony, but Jin Wuyou just wouldn't listen, so Fang Ruotang simply stopped caring and let her be.

"The shop at home just got some new soft gauze yesterday. I thought the goods were pretty good, so I brought over a few bolts. Summer is almost here, so I'll use them to make mosquito nets to keep mosquitoes away. Do you think they're suitable, Grand Preceptor?"

"Not bad, it's pretty good." Fang Ruotang had just woken up and was not in much interest.

She didn't react, but the peach-red and apricot-white girls behind her exchanged a glance. Miss Jin must have overheard their conversation a couple of days ago, which is why she immediately found the soft silk gauze and sent it over.

They had only casually remarked that summer was approaching and they needed to prepare new tents, never expecting Miss Jin to take it so seriously.

During their interactions, Jin Wuyou gained some understanding of Fang Ruotang's preferences. Like most women, she loved dazzling jewelry, glamorous dresses, and all kinds of delicious food.

Compared to the first two, food is more likely to win her over, especially food that she has never tried before.

“I just passed by Babaozhai and saw that the pine nut and lily pastry had just come out of the oven, so I bought a box. Please try it.”

Babaozhai was the most popular pastry shop in the capital. Every day before it even opened, servants and maids from various households would line up to buy freshly baked pastries, which happened to be Fang Ruotang's favorite.

"I just woke up and I'm a little hungry." Fang Ruotang's eyes lit up.

Upon seeing this, Jin Wuyou's smile became even more gentle.

Zhang Lu opened the box and touched the edge of the box; it was still slightly warm, so it shouldn't have affected the taste.

"It's delicious."

Fang Ruotang took a big bite, her eyes squinting happily. She ate three pieces in a row, and Xingbai immediately handed her a cup of tea to her lips.

"Miss, please moisten your lips."

Fang Ruotang took a sip from Xingbai's hand, then ate two more pieces. A box of pine nut and lily pastries contained only six small, delicate pieces.

Jin Wuyou naturally wouldn't just buy one box; there were several other boxes of different flavors on the side. Seeing that Fang Ruotang had stopped eating, he brought up the important matter.

"The Zhuang and Ding families have arrived, but each family sent more than one person. They didn't know which child was suitable, so they sent several over, hoping that the Grand Preceptor could make the decision. Would you like to take a look?"

"Sure! Where are they?"

"They're all waiting at the door. If the Grand Preceptor wants to see me, I'll let them in now."

“Okay!” Fang Ruotang agreed.

Jin Wuyou immediately sent Chunfen to fetch people.

The Prime Minister's residence would never actually allow guests to stand outside the gate, but it's unclear whether the Sixth Miss would receive any guests.

Therefore, everyone was settled in the side hall of the outer courtyard.

Before long, the young masters and ladies from both families arrived, and at a glance, there were more than ten of them.

"Greetings, Grand Preceptor."

The group of people greeted each other respectfully. Fang Ruotang nodded slightly to signal them to stand up, and then gave the spirit-testing stone to Jin Wuyou.

Jin Wuyou had tried before; his spiritual roots were quite mixed, but he had no talent.

Although she was disappointed, she was only down for two days.

On the bright side, given her status and talent, the fact that she qualified for the sect before many other exceptional talents is already an opportunity.

"Let's give it a try." Fang Ruotang didn't say much to them because she was currently asking Xiao Jingzi about the group.

Are there any among them of questionable character who should be eliminated first?

Do you see that little girl in the pink dress?

The little girl in the pink dress glanced down at the color of her clothes, then looked around and realized she was the only one wearing pink, and her expression immediately changed.

Has she become so wicked that she's registered under the spirit's name?

She's not a bad person... right?

Is she of questionable character?

No, she's dying. In the original timeline, she'd live for less than a month.

The girl in pink breathed a sigh of relief and immediately picked it up again.

Her little face was all crestfallen.

It's more accurate to say she's a bad person.

Does she have some serious illness?

No, she was murdered.

Fang Ruotang's eyes widened as she looked at the girl in pink, noticing that she looked like she was facing a terrible disaster.

What's wrong with her?

[No spiritual root, so I won't be selected.]

Oh, that's a bit tragic.

Fang Ruotang withdrew her gaze and pressed for details about why the girl in pink with the small mirror had been murdered. After hearing the story, she couldn't help but feel compassion.

"Come here." Fang Ruotang felt a pang of pity seeing the little girl in pink with tears streaming down her face.

After all, she was just not selected, but she looked like she had lost her parents. What she was about to say would probably be hard for her to accept.

Fang Ruotang was unaware that the little girl in pink had heard her innermost thoughts, which was why she acted as if the world was collapsing.

“Grand Preceptor, her name is Zhuang Fu’er, the only legitimate daughter of the Zhuang family.” Jin Wuyou spoke up at the right moment, and gave Zhuang Fu’er a warning look.

Zhuang Fu'er wiped away her tears and stepped forward.

"I'm sorry to have made you laugh, Grand Preceptor. Fu'er, Fu'er..." Thinking of her tragically deceased friend, Zhuang Fu'er lost all decorum.

Fang Ruotang already felt sorry for the girl, so she naturally couldn't take offense. However, she couldn't remain silent; she couldn't just watch them act like the cartoons Xiao Jingzi was showing her.
