Chapter 38 The Disappearing Corpse

Chapter 38 The Disappearing Corpse

In a large wheat field, a cordon was drawn in the distance. The police handed Lu Bai and Li Ziyu a pair of gloves each.

His furrowed brows explained the strangeness of this case. "There was only a small amount of human tissue at the scene."

In other words, the body disappeared.

Lu Bai put on gloves and lifted the cordon. "Have you checked the road surveillance?"

The police officer nodded and said, "We have checked. This is a wheat field in the village. There is no surveillance except for one at the entrance of the village."

"But there are many small paths in the village. We have sent people to check and see if there are any useful clues."

Lu Bai looked at the wheat field in front of her that had been burned to the ground. She looked around and asked, "Such a big fire, no one noticed it?"

The police officer explained, "Although burning wheat is now prohibited, there are still villagers who burn it. They may think they are burning wheat, so they don't pay attention."

Li Ziyu said calmly, "Do they not care, or do you think they don't care?"

These are two conclusions.

The police officer's eyes were obviously a little evasive. "You may not know this at the city police station, but we received a lot of reports of wheat burning at this time of year in previous years."

He wanted to say something else, but Li Ziyu had already walked past him and entered the scene.

Lu Bai gave the police officer a meaningful look and said, "I think it's the most taboo to be cautious when handling a case."

These three words are completely groundless and cannot even be considered the most basic reasoning.

Li Ziyu squatted beside Liu Zhengfeng, looking at the burnt finger and the carbonized clothes on the ground.

She asked, "Was this finger formed before or after death?"

Liu Zhengfeng looked at the pitifully small amount of human tissue at the scene and said, "It was caused after death. After the body was burned, it might have been moved by someone, so this finger was broken in the process."

"These charred skins should also have fallen off during this process."

Li Ziyu observed the carbonized clothes on the ground, "Pure cotton."

Lu Bai was much bolder now. She pressed close to Li Ziyu and asked, "Is there anything strange about pure cotton?"

[Pure cotton clothing is not really strange, but wearing pure cotton all over the body indicates that this person has high standards for quality of life.]

This is the most basic psychological profiling.

Lu Bai looked at a dirt road not far away and said, "If I were the murderer, I would go that way."

A road with no surveillance and large enough for traffic.

Li Ziyu, however, has a different view, "Will the murderer choose to commit the crime outdoors?"

[If the fire can be covered by burning wheat, then what about the rest? How was the person killed? Is this the first crime scene? The remains of the corpse? ]

These questions may not be answered solely by the clues left in the wheat fields.

Zhang Hai trotted over and said, "Captain Lu, the surveillance camera found a white BMW car that drove into this place early this morning."

"We asked the villagers, but none of them knew the car."

The villagers lived very close to each other and knew each other's cars. If they hadn't seen such an unfamiliar car in the early morning, they would have reported it to the police.

Lu Bai took off his gloves and asked, "Can you see the license plate clearly?"

Zhang Hai nodded, "We are already checking."

Lu Bai and her group walked outside the cordon. She wanted to survey the surrounding situation again, but the look of an old lady caught her attention.

She walked up to the old lady and asked, "Grandma, do you have anything to say?"

According to her previous experience in handling cases, the information that such village intelligence personnel can provide to the police is often full of surprises.

The old lady pointed at the scorched wheat field and said, "I woke up last night and saw a car driving in. I was curious and went to take a look. Then I saw a woman getting out of the car."

Look! Surprise!

Lu Bai further asked, "Did you see what she looked like? Or were there any other people?"

The old lady shook her head. "It was too dark. I could only see her car parked there, and then a woman got out, but I couldn't see anything else."

Lu Bai waved to Zhang Hai and said, "Take a statement for grandma."

She looked for Li Ziyu in the crowd, only to see that familiar figure wandering on an inconspicuous path.

She limped over there step by step.

Li Ziyu seemed to sense something and looked back. When he saw Lu Bai's expression, his brows wrinkled unconsciously.

There was a hint of blame in her voice, "Don't walk around with a lame leg."

Although he said this, Li Ziyu couldn't hide his concern.

Lu Bai waved his hands nonchalantly, "I was injured worse when I was on a mission before."

Li Ziyu was silent.

She didn't say anything, but there was a feeling in her heart that she had never experienced before, which was slowly disturbing her thoughts.

Lu Bai stretched out his hand, "You don't even help me."

Li Ziyu took two steps towards her and leaned his shoulder against her.

[Who told you to hold that bomb? It would have been better if you just gave it to me in the beginning. ]

The corner of Lu Bai's mouth twitched. Did this seem to be what Li Ziyu was thinking?

Is she still a burden to her?

[I am a useless person in this world, with no ties or concerns. I am supposed to be the one committing suicide.]

Lu Bai was stunned.

This was the first time she heard Li Ziyu speak so pessimistically since she heard her inner thoughts.

She pursed her lips, "Nannan..."

[Drag marks?]

Li Ziyu's inner voice interrupted her words, and Lu Bai followed her gaze.

There was indeed a trace of dragging in the grass.

Lu Bai narrowed his eyes, "Someone is dragging a corpse here?"

Li Ziyu shook his head, "Probably not."

[The traces of human tissue residue show that the body was burned very thoroughly. The slightest movement would cause carbonization to fall off, but this is very clean, and it doesn't look like the traces of being dragged after burning.]

It got dark quickly, and Lu Bai turned on the flashlight, and she inadvertently shone the light across a patch of grass.

There was a strong reflection there for a moment.

Li Ziyu took the evidence bag, squatted down, picked up the thing, and said, "It's a piece of glass."

Lu Bai also squatted beside her, "There are some garbage and other things here, which should be relatively normal."

Li Ziyu handed the fragments to her.

After she saw clearly, she denied what she said.

The glass is very clean, there doesn't seem to be any debris or garbage on it, and there are no scratches at all.

If it is randomly thrown on a road like this, it will be crushed by pedestrians or vehicles in less than half a day.

Li Ziyu spoke slowly, "We received the report two hours ago, which means this place was discovered two hours ago."

Lu Bai continued her words: "So this thing might have been left here between the time the crime occurred and the time the police were called."

Li Ziyu added, "The grass here is covered with wheat ash, which means that after the burning, the smoke and dust were scattered here, but there is no dust on this glass. It is very likely that this thing was dropped some time after the burning."

The two of them talked to each other, and there was a rare tacit understanding between them.

"Hey! Mr. Wang, why are you here?"

A surprised cry from a villager in the distance attracted the attention of both of them.
