Chapter 60 Jiang Ruan Sobers Up
"Weren't you sleeping?" Huo Zhizhou sat up, his emotions showing no sign of anything unusual.
“Sleeping is nothing compared to gossiping.” Gu Shixi said this while greeting the people outside, asking them to bring in two glasses and a bottle of wine. After giving these instructions, he continued to Huo Zhizhou, “Especially since it’s your gossip.”
Huo Zhizhou did not speak.
The wine and glasses were brought in.
After asking the others to leave, Gu Shixi opened a bottle of wine, filled two glasses, and handed one to him, saying, "You have a story, and I have wine. Tell me."
Huo Zhizhou looked at him.
His eyes held so much in that moment.
"Don't look at me like that, it's creepy," Gu Shixi joked.
Huo Zhizhou took the wine glass from his hand and placed it on the table.
Gu Shixi: "?"
Gu Shixi was now genuinely curious: "What exactly happened?"
“Last night, Sui Sui asked me two questions, and he got angry after I answered them,” Huo Zhizhou said calmly. “He even told me to pretend he was dead.”
"Which two questions?" Gu Shixi realized that these two questions were definitely not simple.
Sui Sui is a sensible child. Even though he has rarely come back these past few years, I know he wouldn't say such things casually unless he's been deeply hurt.
Huo Zhizhou glanced at him but did not answer.
He wasn't bothered by those two questions; rather, they reminded him of other things.
“I won’t force you to tell me, but it’s most likely related to Su Anran.” Gu Shixi could guess something. “But since you know Su Anran isn’t a kind person, why are you still entangled with her?”
Knowing that she was scheming and distorting the truth, instead of throwing her away, he indulged her even more.
This tactic is so unlike Huo Zhizhou's.
"Because of a promise." This was the first time Huo Zhizhou had confessed this to him.
“Even if it’s a promise, you can’t…” Gu Shixi paused as if he had thought of something.
His lips parted slightly, and his originally relaxed and carefree mood suddenly became depressed.
Silence fell over the private room; neither of them spoke.
After a long while.
Gu Shixi picked up the glass of wine on the table and drank it all in one gulp. His voice was a little hoarse: "What happened back then wasn't your fault. You don't need to take the blame on yourself."
Huo Zhizhou kept his head down and didn't speak, his hands resting naturally on his knees.
"Forget it, you can handle your own affairs." Gu Shixi didn't try to persuade him anymore. "Relationships are not like other things. No matter how much others know, they can't empathize with you as the person involved, and they have no right to judge. As a brother, I'll just be there for you when you need me."
"Tell Su Bingcheng that if Su Zhu wants to come back, let her come back," Huo Zhizhou said. "As long as she doesn't offer any benefits, I won't interfere."
Gu Shixi pressed further, "Where is Ye Yanzhi?"
Huo Zhizhou glanced at him sideways and said, "What do you think?"
Gu Shixi understood instantly.
Su Zhu is acceptable, but Ye Yanzhi is not.
Huo Zhizhou didn't say anything more. He stood up, picked up the car keys and phone from the table, glanced at Huo Zhizhou's empty wine glass, and asked, "Do you want to go back? I'll take you."
"Nonsense, of course I will." Gu Shixi regained his usual carefree attitude, as if his previous silence belonged to a different person. "Don't call me at this time next time, I'm so sleepy."
Huo Zhizhou gave a faint "hmm".
The two left the private room together.
Gu Shixi tossed the car keys to the club manager, telling him to find someone to drive the car back at dawn, while he himself got into Huo Zhizhou's passenger seat.
On the way back, Gu Shixi glanced at the person driving from time to time and asked what was on his mind: "Why did you suddenly decide to bring Su Zhu back? You've always disliked her talking badly about you in front of Jiang Ruan."
“She is Jiang Ruan’s friend,” Huo Zhizhou answered directly. “I’ve limited her financial support, but I can’t deprive her of her emotional value to Jiang Ruan as well.”
Gu Shixi paused for a moment, then smiled.
He arrived home more than forty minutes later.
He got out of the car and closed the door in one smooth motion.
As Huo Zhizhou was about to leave for the waterside villa, he called out to him, "Huo Er."
Huo Zhizhou stopped pressing the accelerator and glanced at him.
Before he could even ask what was wrong, Gu Shixi spoke first: "Don't live in the past, don't carry such a heavy burden forward. If he were still here, he wouldn't want you to be like this."
Huo Zhizhou tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
He pressed his thin lips into a line and didn't say a word.
"Be careful on the road, drive slowly." Gu Shixi smiled and waved to him, as if trying to convey her happy and relaxed mood.
Huo Zhizhou stepped on the gas and drove off. On the way back, past events kept flashing through his mind, and he thought of that smiling, optimistic boy.
He achieved fame at a young age, and his life was brilliant.
But such people are forever stuck at the most beautiful age of seventeen.
drop--
A car horn sounded.
Huo Zhizhou suddenly came to his senses, and realized that the red light in front of him had turned green at some point.
He composed himself and started the car. Perhaps he was exhausted from staying up all night, or perhaps he was thinking about the past and was not in the right state of mind. When he returned to the waterside villa, he exuded a sense of distance.
Hearing the door to the next bedroom open, Su Anran came out wearing a silk nightgown.
Upon seeing it was him, she glanced at the time; it was not yet six o'clock. "Zhizhou, why are you here so early?"
"Did I disturb you?" Huo Zhizhou's eyes were indifferent.
Su Anran noticed that something was wrong with him and casually made up an excuse: "No."
"Then go back to sleep, it's still early." Huo Zhizhou's hand was still on the doorknob of his room. "Wake me up when you wake up, and I'll go shopping with you."
Su Anran said "okay".
Huo Zhizhou hummed in agreement and went into his bedroom.
The closed door separated them, and Su Anran looked thoughtfully in the direction of the door, trying to figure out why Huo Zhizhou was acting strangely.
Although she didn't know much about him, she knew that even if he didn't want to be intimate with her, he would still care about her out of a sense of responsibility and commitment, but he didn't say anything.
Unable to get an answer, she attributed it all to Jiang Ruan.
Jiang Ruan never imagined that she would be burdened with such a huge accusation.
6:30.
The alarm clock rang.
Jiang Ruan finally woke up from her drunken stupor.
She has a low alcohol tolerance; she gets drunk after just two or three drinks. But she can fully recover after a good night's sleep. She doesn't need any hangover soup or any time to recover.
Her memory of last night stopped at the point of finishing the fourth glass of wine; she couldn't remember anything after that. She had intended to rely on willpower to finish the bottle, but she didn't expect her willpower to be so weak under the influence of alcohol.
She didn't even know if she had finished the bottle of wine; she only knew that she had completely blacked out. She didn't delve too deeply into it and planned to ask Sui Sui and Ye Yanzhi later.
After she got up and washed up, she made breakfast. By the time breakfast was ready, Sui Sui had also gotten up and washed up. Looking at her darling sitting obediently at the table eating breakfast, Jiang Ruan hesitated for a moment and asked, "Sweetie, did Uncle Ye bring me home last night?"
