Chapter 319: The Fish That Slipped Through the Net

Wei Meiyu: “…”

Looking at the tall figure in front of her, who spoke without a trace of affection, Wei Meiyu's eyes slowly cooled down. After all, there was only family affection between him and her, not love.

It turns out that with some people and some things, no matter how hard you try, there is always an unbridgeable gap between you, just like she has always had a crush on Tang Yan, but Tang Yan has always treated her as just a younger sister.

While he was thinking, the elevator had reached the first floor. The elevator door opened and Tang Yan walked forward in a hurried step. Wei Meiyu followed behind him, staring at his back as he walked further and further away.

Suddenly, Wei Meiyu found the courage from nowhere and called out to Tang Yan's back.

"Brother Tang Yan, is it really impossible between us?"

Just two short sentences seemed to have exhausted all the strength of Wei Meiyu's life!

How she wished Tang Yan would turn around at this moment and reach out to her, and she would run into his arms without hesitation.

Unfortunately, the man just stopped and didn't look back. A dull voice came from the front.

"Xiaoyu, we have always been only suitable to be friends, not lovers. Let it go. Just think of me as... your brother!"

After saying that, Tang Yan took a step and strode away, leaving Wei Meiyu standing in the lobby on the first floor, looking at Tang Yan's back... He walked farther and farther away, and was withdrawn from her world.

Tang Yan walked out of the hall, came to the parking lot, and got into his car. The low-key black car whirred out of the parking lot and stopped in front of a grocery store. Tang Yan pulled over and went to the grocery store.

In the grocery store, a thin and capable middle-aged man was sorting the goods. Tang Yan walked in, stood at the cashier counter, and said something to the boss.

"Boss, give me a box of cigarettes, two boxes of mooncakes, and half a pound of milk candy!"

The boss, who was sorting the goods, paused and responded in the direction of Tang Yan.

"Oh, I see. Please wait a moment. I'll get the goods for you right away."

As he spoke, the capable middle-aged man swiftly took the goods that Tang Yan wanted, came to the counter, wrapped the goods in a phoenix bag, handed it over, and said enthusiastically.

"Seventy dollars in total!"

"Um!"

Tang Yan nodded, lowered his head, took out the money and handed it over. Then he saw the grocery store owner whispered in his ear while handing him something.

"The evidence Xiaoyue obtained is very important and played a crucial role. The bureau has already sent someone to obtain it, and the higher-ups have decided to close the net during this period. There are so many people involved in this case, so it's inevitable that some will slip through the net. The higher-ups asked me to tell you that since Xiaoyue is injured, let her stay with you. If you have connections, it would be best to change her identity and get her out of City A. This is the only way to ensure her safety. Xiaoyue's appearance has been exposed during the last operation."

The man spoke softly in just a few words, but Tang Yan heard them clearly. He calmly handed the money to the man again. The man enthusiastically took the money from Tang Yan, counted it carefully, and said to Tang Yan.

"Okay, I've received seventy yuan from you. The amount is correct. Please take care. Today is Mid-Autumn Festival. I wish you a happy Mid-Autumn Festival and a happy family!"

As he spoke, the middle-aged man waved in Tang Yan's direction. Tang Yan lowered his head with a serious expression.

After a simple "Yeah!", he returned to the car with the things in his hands.

Sitting in the car, Tang Yan started the car while thinking about the meaning of the middle-aged man's words.

I thought to myself, it seems that I have to send A Yue out of City A!

This grocery store was Ah Yue's secret contact point. Ever since Ah Yue was injured and unable to come out for meetings, he had been the one to contact the police station on Ah Yue's behalf.

He came to meet her today when he was leaving in the morning. Ah Yue told him that today was the Mid-Autumn Festival and there must be something she wanted to tell her at the bureau, so she asked him to come to the grocery store after get off work. That's why he had to work overtime alone until now.

Because it was near evening and every household was busy celebrating the festival, no one would notice that he would go to a small grocery store to buy things, and no one would connect the simple act of buying things with the matter of making a connection.

After all, A Yue's identity is now both sensitive and dangerous. He doesn't want people to know that A Yue has been staying in his house since she was injured. Since he saved A Yue, he will not allow any accidents to happen.

Tang Yan carried mooncakes and milk candies back to his residence in City A. It was a single-family apartment building, and most of the people living in it were single young men and women, or wanderers. Perhaps on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, when people are reunited, most people went home to celebrate the festival?

The corridor was so quiet that Tang Yan's footsteps could be heard. His mother had called him in the morning and asked him to go home for the holidays, but thinking of Ah Yue being all alone in his bachelor apartment, Tang Yan refused his mother's request to go home for the holidays. He found an excuse to work overtime and sent his mother away.

Arriving at his residence, Tang Yan took out his key and glanced around calmly. After making sure that there was nothing unusual or suspicious, he carefully observed the door to make sure there were no signs of human damage. The hidden lines he had left before leaving in the morning were still there. Only then did Tang Yan open the door with confidence.

Ever since Ah Yue moved into his bachelor apartment, Tang Yan found that he had automatically been promoted from a bank official to an intelligence officer and investigator.

No matter where he went, he would deliberately observe whether there was anyone following him or eavesdropping on him, so as not to reveal any flaws and expose A Yue's location.

After opening the door and entering the house, Tang Yan quickly locked the door and pulled the safety bolt to make sure the door was closed securely.

Tang Yan subconsciously looked for A Yue's figure. It was almost evening, the room was quiet and dark. A Yue sat quietly in front of the window, staring out with a distant and deep gaze, as if she wanted to see her future clearly through the hazy ink color.

When she heard the sound of Tang Yan opening the door, A Yue did not turn back, but just sat there stubbornly, as if she wanted to see clearly her way home under the heavy twilight.

Tang Yan put the things in his hand on the coffee table, slowly walked to stand behind A Yue, and said softly.

"It's already dark, Ah Yue, why are you still sitting here? Have you eaten?"

Ah Yue slowly turned around and looked at the tall figure of the man in the heavy ink and color. Her eyes darkened before she slowly spoke.

"Tang Yan, you're back. I'll go cook now. You weren't home before, and I was afraid that cooking in this room would make noise and expose my whereabouts, so I kept waiting for you to come back."

As an undercover agent, A Yue knew very well that if she lived in Tang Yan's bachelor apartment, she would have to follow his daily life.
