Chapter 6 Yu Nian, do you know your crime?
"My dear lady! Why are you still sleeping at this hour?"
Chun Tao's anxious voice woke Yu Nian, who was still asleep.
"What's wrong? We don't have to go to work today..."
Yu Nian rubbed her eyes and muttered a dissatisfied grumble under her breath. Last night, because of that guy Chunyu Han, Yu Nian didn't fall asleep until midnight, and her half-open eyes were still a little sore.
"What are you saying, Miss? Get up and wash up. Master is waiting for you in the hall after returning from the morning court session. He looks quite angry."
As Chuntao combed Yu Nian's hair, she muttered to herself that she had never seen the master and the fifth young lady get angry before, so something important must have happened.
Yu Nian yawned dismissively. In the original owner's memories, Prime Minister Yu Huaifeng doted on her. When he was angry, he would only scold her a couple of times. Compared to Chunyu Han's threats, those were nothing.
"Huh? What is this thing? Take it off, take it off!"
Yu Nian saw the intricately patterned beaded flower in Chun Tao's hand in the bronze mirror and looked at her with disdain.
Beaded ornaments were the favorite of the original female protagonist, Yu Zhirou. In order to imitate her, Yu Nian deliberately wore the same headdress, makeup, and light-colored clothes, losing herself in her infatuation.
Little did they know that all their efforts were merely a poor imitation, appearing extremely low-end and cheap compared to the original owner.
"This one, I'll take it."
Yu Nian picked out a blue-and-white jade hairpin from the jewelry box and handed it to Chun Tao.
Wearing a light pink ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress), Yu Nian exudes the charm of a young girl.
The original owner had a pair of beautiful peach blossom eyes and a small face the size of a palm. She was clearly not bad-looking, but she insisted on imitating other people's outfits, which made her look less attractive.
When Yu Nian appeared in the living room, Prime Minister Yu almost choked on his tea. He hadn't seen Yu Nian in her original form for a long time, and he was momentarily lost in thought.
Today's daughter looks a lot like her mother when she was young.
But then he remembered what Yu Nian had done yesterday, and Prime Minister Yu's face hardened.
"Niannian, look at you! You're in the prime of your youth, a flower in full bloom. Even if you don't marry the Crown Prince, you can choose any of the talented men in the capital. Yet you had to say in front of the entire court that you're in love with that eunuch Chunyu Han. Are you trying to make your father die of anger?!"
Prime Minister Yu, with a fierce expression, lectured Yu Nian at length, saying that she was his only precious daughter and that she absolutely could not marry a rootless scoundrel.
Being a eunuch is certainly not a wise choice, but it's better than marrying the crown prince and having your whole family die.
Yu Nian cleared her throat and sat down in the chair next to Prime Minister Yu, her tone carrying a hint of coquetry, which was exactly what the original owner remembered about Prime Minister Yu.
"Father, don't be angry. Although Chunyu Han has a few minor flaws, he is still a very good person."
He owns a large number of mansions and luxury cars, is extremely wealthy, wields immense power, and has an exceptionally handsome face.
Putting aside his identity and personality, Chunyu Han was a diamond-level heartthrob in Yu Nian's era.
Prime Minister Yu's anger subsided somewhat because of Yu Nian's coquettishness, but he still strongly disagreed with Yu Nian's statement.
"He's not bad? The blood on his hands could stain the entire moat red. Don't let his good looks blind you."
Chunyu Han entered the Eastern Depot at a young age, crawling out of piles of corpses, and rose to become regent in just a few years. Now his influence even surpasses mine. Such a person is extremely cunning and calculating, not suitable for you.”
Yu Nian sighed slightly. "Has Prime Minister Yu forgotten that he himself is a great traitor?"
Moreover, the Crown Prince is the most cunning one, okay? Just by a quick glance, he's got at least 180 schemes in his head.
Whether it suits you or not is one thing, but at least you can give it a try.
Yu Nian couldn't back down at a time like this, otherwise, given her father's temperament, if Yu Nian took a step back, he would immediately arrange a series of blind dates for her.
"Try? What's the point of trying with a castrated dog?"
"Is your brain damaged by the Crown Prince? Someone, bring the Fourth Young Master over so the Fifth Young Master can take a look!"
Castrated dog? Father, watch your words! Don't let the Prime Minister's mansion be ruined by the Crown Prince one day, only to have Chunyu Han confiscate it the next.
As soon as Prime Minister Yu finished speaking, the steward hurriedly walked in from outside.
Prime Minister Yu glanced at the steward and said casually, "What kind of behavior is this, all flustered and panicked?"
"Reporting to your master, someone from the palace has come to summon the Fifth Miss. They say Her Majesty the Empress has invited her."
Yu Nian's eyes flickered slightly. The Empress was the Crown Prince's mother. The reason she was summoned to the palace at this time was probably because of the annulment of the engagement yesterday.
Before the vermilion palace gates, Prime Minister Yu solemnly instructed Yu Nian. His initial anger had long since dissipated; beyond this gate lay the imperial territory, and it would be a lie to say he wasn't worried.
"Niannian, your father is waiting for you outside the palace. If anything seems amiss, just send someone with money to let us know. Don't be afraid, your father is here."
Although Yu Huaifeng was a treacherous official, he was incredibly good to his daughter.
Yu Nian was a left-behind child since childhood, and after growing up, she devoted all her energy to her work. Yu Huaifeng's words made her feel the long-lost family affection.
"Don't worry, Dad, I'll be back."
Yu Nian smiled and waved to Prime Minister Yu, then turned and stepped into the palace gate. Since Yu Nian had made up her mind to live in this world, she should face these things with dignity.
It took an hour just to walk from the palace gate to the Phoenix Palace where the Empress resided.
As Yu Nian could see a corner of the magnificent palace in the distance, the system's notification sounded in her mind.
[Ding~, system clocking in. The daily life-extending mission has been refreshed; you can check it on the bound entity's homepage. Congratulations on successfully completing the life-extending mission! You have received a newcomer gift pack: a pair of knee pads to prevent kneeling pain, a minimalist sachet, and a talisman (capable of blocking two fatal attacks). Would you like to claim them now?]
It has to be said that this system is incredibly lazy; it even asks you to check things yourself, showing that it's too lazy to say a single extra word.
"Let's get a pair of knee braces first, we can talk about the rest later."
Yu Nian took a break while using the restroom and put on the very ordinary-looking knee pads.
In the original owner's memory, the empress seemed to treat her quite well, but that was when Yu Nian was still the crown prince's fiancée; things might not be the same now.
Led by a eunuch, Yu Nian entered the Fengyi Palace and performed a standard kneeling bow to the Empress.
"Your humble servant Yu Nian greets Your Majesty the Empress. May Your Majesty enjoy boundless blessings and peace."
The Empress sat gracefully in the main seat, admiring a newly delivered pot of peonies. She plucked a peony petal, sniffed it, and then squinted at Yu Nian, who was kneeling on the ground, her eyes flickering slightly.
The sound wasn't loud, but it was extremely intimidating:
"You audacious Yu Nian, do you know your crime?"
