Chapter 36 What an incredible plot twist!
What an incredible plot twist!
Yu Nian was stunned. In the original owner's memories, there was nothing so explosive.
In a feudal dynasty like the Great Zhao, if Yu Jingzhen had an affair with the Imperial Concubine, no one in the Prime Minister's family would escape punishment; they would all be implicated and punished.
Confiscating their property and imprisoning them is a minor matter; that's the Emperor's most beloved concubine. If the Emperor were to get angry, all the heads of the hundred or so people in the Prime Minister's residence would be hung in front of Xuanhua Gate.
Yu Nian suddenly felt a chill on her neck. This was no longer just about saving the villains; she also had to save herself.
"Stay put, where are you going to crawl to?"
Chunyu Han coldly glanced at Yu Nian, who was trying to climb down from the bed. He could barely take care of himself, yet he was thinking about saving others. He was overestimating himself.
"My lord, my fourth brother would never do something so audacious. There must be some hidden reason behind this."
Yu Nian's mind flashed back to Yu Jing's gentle and refined face. A man as courteous as him would never do such a thing.
Yu Nian's words were not convincing to Chunyu Han. If Yu Nian was already so bold, it was only natural that her brother would be even more audacious.
“I’m going to the palace. Keep an eye on her, Sangtian.”
Chunyu Han left with a statement, neither confirming nor denying Yu Nian's words, but this matter was indeed tricky.
After Chunyu Han left, Yu Nian asked Sangtian to step down, saying he wanted to rest for a while.
After Sangtian left, Yu Nian looked at Chuntao, who was cleaning up the broken pieces of the porridge bowl on the ground, and whispered something.
"Chuntao, stop picking them up. Let's go back to the manor."
"Oh? But the Regent said that you should stay here obediently."
Chun Tao was taken aback. She was actually quite anxious; this was a very serious matter.
"Have you gone mad from staying in the Regent's Mansion? Have you forgotten who's been paying your monthly allowance?"
Yu Nian tapped Chun Tao's forehead. Chunyu Han was indeed her nominal ally now, but sitting idly by and waiting for death was not in Yu Nian's nature.
"But can we get out? The Regent said that Sangtian is watching over you, Miss."
Yu Nian felt that Chun Tao had probably been brainwashed by Chunyu Han, as she kept talking about the Regent.
“You already said that he had Sangtian watch over me, but not you. Now you can go back to the manor via the side path, and then ask Father to come over to see me via the side path.”
Unfortunately, Yu Nian could no longer exchange for the special medicine, otherwise she would have definitely sneaked away by now.
"Then I'll go right away."
Chun Tao felt as if a new world had been opened to her, and she immediately ran outside.
Watching Chun Tao leave, Yu Nian dared to hiss. Her wound was in great pain, but with Chun Tao there, Yu Nian couldn't say anything, afraid that the girl would worry about her again.
Not long after, Chun Tao rushed back, bringing Yu Huaifeng with her.
Sangtian knew Yu Huaifeng's identity, and as long as Yu Nian didn't leave Rendong Pavilion, she wouldn't stop her from seeing whomever she wanted.
Yu Huaifeng hurriedly followed Chun Tao over, and when he saw his daughter lying in Chunyu Han's bedroom, he almost couldn't catch his breath.
Judging from the girl's injuries, she must have been here for more than a day.
"Niannian, what are you doing here? Who hurt you like this?"
Prime Minister Yu had too many questions he wanted to ask Yu Nian, but in the end, all he wanted to say was about Yu Nian's safety.
"Father, my injury is not serious, I won't die, but if you had come any later, Fourth Brother would have been in danger."
Despite the pain, Yu Nian handed the Prime Minister a note summarizing her thoughts.
"You should go to the palace quickly. This concerns the life and death of the Yu family. Once this is over, I will tell you whatever you want to know."
Yu Nian guessed that in ancient times, the only way to determine if a newborn baby was not one's own flesh and blood was through a blood test.
So she wrote a short essay about the scientifically unfounded matter of blood kinship testing, using the most colloquial language to bypass the word "science" and cover two methods for separating and mixing blood.
As long as the prime minister can see the emperor and then explain the situation in a more tactful way, there shouldn't be any major problems.
The above is Yu Nianli's assumption; she doesn't know that Yu Huaifeng couldn't even get into the palace.
The Emperor decreed that members of the Yu family were not allowed to enter the palace unless summoned.
Just as Yu Huaifeng was pacing anxiously at the palace gate, a carriage with a dome embroidered with gold python patterns stopped in front of him.
Chunyu Han lifted the carriage curtain, leaving Yu Huaifeng with only a solitary and aloof profile.
"If the Prime Minister has anything to say, I can convey it on his behalf."
Yu Huaifeng thought he was hallucinating, as Chunyu Han never usually meddled in other people's business.
"Lord Chunyu is interested in matters concerning my Yu family?"
Having spent most of his life in officialdom, Yu Huaifeng knew that any act of assistance came at a price.
Chunyu Han nodded, correcting Prime Minister Yu's wording.
"I'm only interested in Yu Nian's affairs."
...
Inside the vermilion palace walls, the Emperor personally interrogated Yu Jing in the Phoenix Palace.
The palace servants all hung their heads, not daring to breathe too loudly, for fear of accidentally offending the emperor and losing their heads.
"Yu Jing, do you know your crime?"
Yu Jing, dressed in a light blue brocade robe, knelt on the ground. After several days of traveling and sleeping in the open, Yu Jing looked somewhat haggard.
"I have a clear conscience and do not know what crime I have committed."
Yu Jing was still worried about Yu Nian's poison and wondered how Yu Nian's health had improved in the past few days.
"How dare you! You had an affair with the Imperial Concubine and caused chaos in the royal bloodline, yet you dare to say you have no remorse!"
The emperor raised his hand, clenched his fist, and slammed it heavily on the table, causing the tea on the table to splash out.
Yu Jing looked up in shock, his usual composure gone.
"I have already performed a blood test with that bastard, and he is not my son at all! The Imperial Concubine's maid, Qinglian, witnessed your affair with the Imperial Concubine. I see you won't admit it until you see the coffin! Bring Qinglian up here!"
A petite maid was brought up. Yu Jing recognized her; she was the dowry maid of Consort Lu Mingyue.
Yu Jing believed he was upright and had nothing to fear, except for the few harsh words Lu Mingyue said when he resigned with the Imperial Concubine that day.
Could it be that those few words led to their deaths...?
Before Qinglian could speak, a eunuch whispered something to the emperor.
"Your Majesty, the Regent has arrived."
"What is he doing here? I appointed him as regent, and now he even wants to supervise my domestic affairs?"
The emperor was already angry, and he became even more furious when he heard that Chunyu Han had arrived.
"Your Majesty, please calm down. The Regent may have something important to discuss."
The eunuchs dared not offend the emperor, but they dared not offend Chunyu Han even more, for he was their godfather.
"Let him in."
After weighing his options, the Emperor reluctantly spoke.
Chunyu Han entered the room, glanced at the person kneeling on the ground, and his deep gaze lingered on the Empress for a moment.
The Emperor's voice was quite displeased: "Chunyu Han, I appointed you to act as regent, what are you doing here?"
