The mountain breeze at night blows on my body, bringing a little coolness. It is a bit cold as it is not yet officially summer.
Chief Rick made a gesture of invitation and led the way, and Jun Shutong followed in.
As soon as I stepped into the room, a smell of medicine and mold hit me in the face.
Following the light of the candle, Jun Shutong looked around as he walked.
The room was simply furnished with a wooden table, a wooden bed covered with hay, and a quilt of an indeterminate color.
There were two stone-polished bowls and a stone-ground knife on the table. Under the window was a dilapidated stove with medicine still boiling on it.
At the base of the wall, there were three old wooden chairs, covered in dust.
"If Miss Jun has no suggestions, please sit down and talk."
“Not recommended, not recommended.”
Jun Shutong waved her hands repeatedly. In such a situation, what else could she suggest? When mice came, they would cry and leave. When thieves came, they would leave ten gold coins. How could she bear to despise them? As she spoke, she walked towards the chair.
Darcy quickly wiped it with his sleeve, then embarrassedly asked Jun Shutong to sit down.
"Chief, are you sick?"
"Is there any doctor in the clan who knows how to treat illnesses?"
When Chief Rick was young, he also went to the outside world to gain experience for a few years. He remembered all the names in human society, otherwise he would not have become the chief.
"What the young lady calls a doctor is what we call a witch doctor here."
"This is an old problem of mine. When it breaks out, my whole body aches. These medicines can only temporarily relieve the pain, but they can't cure it. I'm sorry to have embarrassed you, Miss Jun."
Elder Rick pointed to the medicine on the stove, then said to Jun Shutong, "Miss Jun, on behalf of the Kunda tribe, I would like to thank you for your help over the years."
"Without your help, who knows how many people in the Kunda tribe would have starved to death."
"My lady's great kindness will never be forgotten by our Kunda people."
"In the future, if the young lady needs us, please let us know. Although the Kunda tribe is poor, we have no obligation to our friends."
The old patriarch moved his legs and was about to kneel down, Jun Shutong quickly supported him and lifted him up.
"No need to be so polite, Patriarch. This is just a trivial matter, not worth mentioning. It's just a small favor."
"To be honest, I came here today to discuss something with the clan leader."
"Miss Jun, please speak."
"I believe Darcy has already told you the general outline of what happened. From now on, I will be living in the Mysterious Beast Forest."
"My guards and I will be bothering the Kunda people in the future. I hope we can help each other and live in peace."
"But please rest assured, Elder. My guards are all law-abiding people and will never interfere with the normal life of the Kunda people."
Jun Shutong believes that it is a matter of principle to use courtesy before force.
"Miss Jun, the Kunda tribe welcomes you to live with us in the Mysterious Beast Forest."
"I wonder how many guards Miss Jun has? Do you need our help in building a house?"
Build?
Upon hearing this, Jun Shutong knew that the clan leader had misunderstood, and immediately said:
"I have over 4,000 guards. I came here today to ask the chief to help me find some tribesmen to build houses."
"Of course, I pay wages. If your people don't want gold coins, I can also settle with supplies."
"The main supplies are rice, wheat, flour, corn, oil, salt, sugar..."
Chief Rick's lips trembled as he listened to the long list of supplies.
What do they need the gold coins for? Of course, they need the supplies that can keep them alive. They are not going to leave the Mysterious Beast Forest, so what is the use of the gold coins?
“No, I wonder how many people Miss Jun needs?”
"My Kunda tribe has a total of over 135,000 people, 34,000 of whom are young and middle-aged men, and the rest are women, the elderly, and children."
"I wonder if these 30,000 people are enough?"
Jun Shutong was almost petrified. Why didn't anyone tell her that the Kunda tribe had more than 130,000 people?
If she had known there would be so many people, she would have doubled the amount of supplies she sent every year.
Only now did she understand why the old patriarch's residence was so simple. There were hundreds of thousands of people, and the little supplies she sent every year were only enough to keep the elderly, the weak, and the sick alive.
Jun Shutong felt guilty and said embarrassedly:
"I'm sorry, Chief. No one told me that the Kunda tribe had over a hundred thousand people. If I had known there were so many people, I would have sent more supplies."
"Miss Jun, there's no need to do this. If it weren't for the supplies you sent us, many of us would have starved to death. We're doing very well now."
Jun Shutong nodded: "If these 30,000 people are unemployed, I am willing to hire them."
"The wages are half a pound of food per person per day. Is that feasible?"
"As you know, I'm new here and unfamiliar with everything. Could you please ask them on my behalf if they are willing?"
What? It can solve the problem of food rations for more than 30,000 people at once. Who wouldn't want to do it? Of course, a hundred or a thousand people would be willing to do it.
Chief Rick shook his body and immediately knelt down.
"No need to ask them. I have promised them. Miss Jun has given us a great favor in rescuing the Kunda people. We are unable to repay her. From now on, all the members of the Kunda tribe will be at Miss Jun's command."
"Chief, please get up quickly and don't kneel before me again. I'm still a child and I can't bear it."
Jun Shutong helped Chief Rick up, and then said:
"Chief, since the tribesmen are all willing, can I take 5,000 people with me tomorrow?"
"I need more than just houses. I also need people to open up wasteland and cultivate it. However, the location is rather mysterious, so I can't tell you right now."
"If the clan leader trusts me, I can pay these five thousand men one month's wages first."
