"Can we really go out now?"
Looking at the three children so intently peering out the window, Cheng's mother realized they weren't joking, but through their heads, all she could see outside was thick fog.
Cheng Zhi nodded and handed the mask to her mother, indicating that she should put it on so they could go out soon.
Cheng's mother and father put on masks with some skepticism, and Liu Liu obediently squatted down beside them. The family did nothing but wait.
After waiting for a while, Mr. Cheng's patience wore thin. He took off his mask, intending to start cooking. Unexpectedly, Cheng Zhi and Xiao Feiran suddenly straightened up. Cheng Zhi turned around and said, "The fog is starting to lift!"
As soon as Cheng Zhi said that, her parents immediately gathered around. The fog dissipated very quickly, and in just a short while, they were able to see the ground floor.
Cheng's mother was shocked. She looked at the rapidly dissipating mist and murmured, "It's ridiculously fast, as if it was sucked away by someone."
The fog had almost completely dissipated, and Cheng Zhi and the others walked to the door, preparing to go out. They could hear sounds from outside; other people had also noticed the dissipating fog and were calling to their friends to come out and see.
Mr. and Mrs. Cheng hadn't been out for a long time, and when they put on their outdoor shoes, Mrs. Cheng was actually a little nervous.
The three little ones were also very nervous. Just as they turned the doorknob, Cheng Zhi suddenly remembered the bloodstains left after using the chainsaw that night. If nothing unexpected happened, there should be bloodstains on the ground and walls now. How should she explain it?
Cheng Zhi didn't open the door for a long time, so her parents poked their heads out. "What's going on? Is our doorknob frozen shut?"
Xiao Feiran laughed awkwardly, "Haha, no, how could that be? Cheng Zhi, hurry up and drive."
Having come this far, there was no way she wouldn't open it. Cheng Zhi gritted her teeth, stamped her foot, and opened the door.
The moment it was turned on, a clear world came into view, and Cheng Ye couldn't help but exclaim, "Wow, we can finally see clearly!"
Since she hadn't left the house since the disaster began, Cheng's mother felt as if she had been transported to another world when she saw the city, which had changed so much.
The fastest to run out was Liu Liu, followed by Cheng Ye, who was afraid it would get lost.
Cheng Zhi and the others followed closely behind. As soon as they reached the door, Cheng's parents saw that their front door looked like it had been the site of a murder.
When Cheng's mother saw the dark red bloodstains, she wanted to scream, but she managed to hold it in and covered her mouth with her hand.
Mr. Cheng saw it too. He sensed Mrs. Cheng's fear, put his arm around her, stroked her back, and shook his head slightly, indicating that she shouldn't ask any more questions.
After everyone went down the stairs and stood in front of their own doors, Cheng's father looked at the once clean and tidy three-story house, which now seemed to have been corroded, with some of the plaster falling off the walls. He felt a little heartbroken, saying, "Our house now looks like a ruin."
After all, this is a place they've lived in for most of their lives. Every brick and tile is the result of their hard work. It's heartbreaking to see it in this state. "It's alright, we'll find someone to renovate it once it's finished."
Cheng Zhi stood to one side, gazing at the street that was both familiar and unfamiliar, and sighed silently.
Xiao Feiran patted her shoulder without saying anything.
Perhaps it was just bad luck, but Uncle Yang from the next building was standing at the door with his wife, getting some fresh air.
Seeing that Cheng Zhi's family had all come out, Uncle Yang didn't dare to greet Cheng's father.
Cheng Zhi and her brother, along with Xiao Feiran, met Uncle Yang's gaze and simply nodded to him as a greeting.
The children didn't want to delve into the affairs of adults. However, Xiao Feiran had never seen this couple before, so she took a few extra glances.
Both of them were very thin and old, especially the woman, who looked like she could be blown away by a slight gust of wind.
Cheng Zhi and her family walked further and further away, eventually leaving the street and heading towards the park next door.
Midway through, Cheng Ye led Liu Liu into a nearby residential building. Not long after, he came out with his head down. He originally wanted to visit the grandmother he used to chat with, but unexpectedly, she passed away not long after the cold wave arrived.
Cheng Zhi wasn't familiar with this grandmother, but her mother remembered her. She comforted Cheng Ye, telling her not to be too sad, "Grandma Li is almost ninety. Her children are all filial, and her grandchildren are very sensible and well-behaved. She has lived a very happy life. Don't be too sad."
Cheng Ye nodded and went back to playing with Liu Liu.
After leaving the park, they split up. Cheng Zhi and Xiao Feiran took Liu Liu and continued deeper into the park. The three of them, including Cheng's father, headed towards the usually bustling commercial area.
The park, which is usually lush and green with excellent air quality, is now covered with withered branches and fallen leaves, and the original facilities have been eroded by the previous rain and turned into a pile of scrap metal.
Looking at all this, Xiao Feiran said, "It's such a pity that so many flowers and plants are either extremely cold or extremely hot, and they can't even get any sunlight."
When disaster strikes, plants and animals in the wild suffer the most, unlike humans, they don't even have a place to shelter from the wind and rain.
Cheng Zhi continued walking up the mountain, with Liu Liu leading the way. Xiao Feiran, who was still admiring the flowers and plants, called out, "Are you going to go any further?"
Cheng Zhi, who had been stopped by Xiao Feiran, turned around and said, "Since we're already here, and there's a waterfall inside, aren't we going to go see it?"
Seeing Cheng Zhi so focused, Xiao Feiran was very surprised. "You've really forgotten everything? We still have things to do, things we didn't finish last time. Can you remember them?"
Cheng Zhi stood there, frantically recalling the things she hadn't finished...
Finally, she remembered, slapped her forehead, and grabbed Xiao Feiran as they rushed down the mountain, shouting, "Quick, quick, library! Library! Run!"
Xiao Feiran: "...Sis, we have a car."
The owner suddenly rushed down the slope like a madman. Liu Liu was stunned for five seconds, then got so angry that it barked.
Why did it suddenly run away?! Why aren't you calling it?!
And so, the two of them and the dog finally arrived at the park entrance, and Xiao Feiran easily took the car out of his spatial storage.
However, Cheng Zhi sat in the driver's seat, holding the steering wheel for a long time without moving.
Xiao Feiran stared at her with a dark expression, "Have you forgotten how to drive it?"
Cheng Zhi was still stubbornly insisting, "How could that be? I was just having a spiritual exchange with this car to make it easier for us to cooperate in the future."
"Just keep bragging," Xiao Feiran said, silently watching her without saying a word.
After a moment, Cheng Zhi turned her face with a smile, "Sister Feiran, I have a small question."
Xiao Feiran, who was being called "sister," got goosebumps all over and gritted her teeth, saying, "Let go!"
"Which side is the brake, and which side is the accelerator?"
That's such a sincere question, and that's exactly what Cheng Zhi herself was thinking.
Xiao Feiran had mentally pounded Cheng Zhi a hundred times over, “…Get out of this position.”
