When they got home, their parents were still asleep, so they tiptoed back to their room for a nap.
They didn't get up until it was a little light.
The first thing Cheng Zhi did after getting up was to drag her father to make dumplings.
"Dad! I want to eat dumplings with chive filling and corn and pork filling!" Cheng Zhi pulled on her father's arm and shook it incessantly, as if she wouldn't give up until her father agreed.
The water in Cheng's hand was about to spill, so he quickly put down the teacup. "It's not that I don't want to, but where would we get chives from?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Xiao Feiran smiled and brought out a bowl of chives, which Xiao Zhi had just picked from the ground and were very fresh.
Judging from the way the two children cooperated, they must have already decided what they wanted to eat.
Now that everything was provided, Mr. Cheng didn't refuse and nodded in agreement.
Before Cheng Zhi could even cheer, her father quickly restrained his restless daughter. "Hey! Don't get too excited. Although I agreed today, I'll only provide technical guidance; I'll just talk the talk, not walk the walk."
Originally, I thought Cheng Zhi would throw a tantrum and refuse to do it, but to my surprise, Cheng Zhi calmly agreed after hearing this, and even waved her arm, "Come on!"
After saying that, he immediately went to the kitchen, took out the flour and the basin, and asked Xiao Feiran and Cheng Ye to take out the rest of the things that might be needed.
Sitting on the sofa, Cheng's parents looked at the old-fashioned ceramic kneading basin with flowers in Cheng Zhi's hand and felt it looked increasingly familiar. Cheng's mother tentatively asked, "Zhi Zhi, is this the basin we used before?"
Cheng Zhi nodded, "Yes, I brought it with me when I moved."
For a moment, Cheng's parents didn't know what to say. Cheng's father was actually very reluctant to part with the family's things, but the middle-aged man was stubborn and refused to admit it, muttering, "You little brat, you only bring these useless things."
Cheng Zhi patted the washbasin and retorted, "How can our eating utensils be useless? Besides, everything in our house was carefully purchased by you, and it's all useful..."
These words touched her parents deeply, and they were just about to praise her.
Then Cheng Zhi added, "I even handled the toilet plunger in the bathroom, aren't I amazing, hahaha..."
Mom and Dad: "..." For some reason, the tears of emotion suddenly flowed back.
Finally, everything was ready, and Cheng Zhi started massaging it in.
Cheng Ye thought this was a physically demanding task and wanted to take it on, but Cheng Zhi refused.
Cheng Zhi exerted a great deal of strength, saying, "It's okay, I'll do it. I'll also practice my arm strength."
Rejected, Cheng Ye had no choice but to give up and squat down to watch.
Three minutes later, Cheng Zhi was still vigorously kneading the dough.
Xiao Feiran suddenly patted her shoulder and gave her a gentle reminder, "I heard from your aunt and uncle that this basin is older than you, so take it easy. Besides, you're kneading dough, not killing it, so don't use too much force."
The kneading process is finally over; now it's time for the dough to rest.
After Cheng Zhi finished setting out the noodles, she was about to sit down and rest when her father brought her up, "The filling isn't ready yet. Did you chop the meat? Did you remove the corn kernels? Did you chop the chives?"
Cheng Zhi: "..." I really want to escape, but I can't~
There was no escaping it now. Cheng Zhi looked pitifully at Xiao Feiran and Cheng Ye sitting in the dining room, "We three siblings should share both good times and bad, right?"
Xiao Feiran and Cheng Ye shook their heads in unison, "It's okay, I'll do it. Let's practice our arm strength, come on, come on!"
Cheng Zhi was like a puppy being bitten by the scruff of its neck, about to be dragged into the kitchen, when the two of them finally stood up to help.
"Uncle, let me chop the chives."
"Dad, shouldn't we wash this meat first?"
Cheng's mother, who was originally sitting on the sofa, peeked into the kitchen, though she wasn't sure if it was just her imagination.
She always felt that since they came to Yangzhou, the three of them seemed to have grown up, especially Cheng Zhi and Cheng Ye. Although they still bickered and teased each other, it was only a small quarrel that ended quickly.
Needless to say, Fei Ran has always been well-behaved, but you can tell that Fei Ran is much more relaxed now than when she first arrived, and she is much more natural in her interactions with the two elders and Cheng Ye.
As Cheng's mother watched the four of them busy from behind, she couldn't help but shed a few tears. If time couldn't be turned back, it would be good to stop at this moment.
As if sensing Cheng's mother's emotions, Cheng's father turned to look at her. Although he couldn't quite put his finger on what was wrong, he still walked over to her.
As he approached, he noticed his wife's slightly red eyes. Mr. Cheng quickly squatted down and asked softly, "What's wrong? Did you get sand in your eyes?"
Cheng's mother shook her head, took a deep breath and said, "It's nothing, it's just that when I was looking at the backs of the three of them just now, I felt very gratified that they had suddenly grown up, but as I looked at them... I felt inexplicably sad."
Seeing that Cheng's mother's voice was getting softer and softer, Cheng's father immediately took her hand that was resting on her knees and said, "I understand, you're worried about them."
Mr. Cheng squatted down in front of Mrs. Cheng and comforted her. After a long time, Cheng Zhi and the others had finished dealing with the things and were just waiting for the next step.
As Cheng's mother calmed down, her gaze swept over Cheng's father and she saw the three little ones eavesdropping. Each of them was sticking their heads out to listen, and Cheng's mother couldn't help but burst out laughing.
When Cheng's father saw Cheng's mother smile, he turned to look at the kitchen, putting on a stern expression, "Have you finished your chores? You dare to eavesdrop on your elders? You don't want to live anymore!"
