But even so, what is it that is crying?
“What’s there to cry about?” Yu Jingchen asked.
"I still remember that sweetness. I've looked forward to it countless times since entering the palace. Even if it wasn't this, I hoped to hear a kind word from Your Majesty, but it never happened. I feel that life in the palace is really bitter, so bitter that I can no longer taste sweetness, nor can I taste it anymore," Nan Zhiyun said.
Yu Jingchen paused, his hand about to grab another candied fruit. He never expected Nan Zhiyun to say that.
"Your Majesty, I wish to be alone..." Nan Zhiyun said again.
Yu Jingchen's expression changed slightly, but he still appeared calm.
"What's wrong? Don't you want to see me?" Yu Jingchen took out the candied fruit again and handed it to Nan Zhiyun.
Nan Zhiyun glanced at it and said, "I don't like eating it anymore. The Empress Dowager said that eating too much of this kind of sweet food will cause toothache."
Yu Jingchen's expression stiffened slightly: "Aren't you afraid of hardship?" His tone revealed a hint of nervousness.
“But I’ve gotten used to it, and I don’t need to eat this anymore,” Nan Zhiyun said.
"Are you blaming me?" Yu Jingchen put down what he was holding.
"Your Majesty, I dare not say that. I just feel that I was too presumptuous before. I am the one who disturbed Your Majesty." Nan Zhiyun lowered her head.
"You spent a few days with the Empress Dowager. What did she say to you? Why did you suddenly think this way?" Yu Jingchen asked, his tone more serious than before.
"Her Majesty the Empress Dowager didn't say anything, but I feel that I've been doing well during this time. I've thought a lot, and I realize that it's much easier not to keep hoping for the impossible," Nan Zhiyun replied.
"Nan Zhiyun," Yu Jingchen suddenly called her name. Nan Zhiyun looked at him.
"Have you been having a good time lately?" Yu Jingchen asked her.
“Yes, spending this time with the Empress Dowager feels like going back to my childhood,” Nan Zhiyun said.
"And I think it's enough as it is now," Nan Zhiyun continued.
"So you're planning to never see me again?" Yu Jingchen asked her.
"I know Your Majesty won't like me. I was too ignorant before." Nan Zhiyun didn't dare to look at Yu Jingchen's expression.
Yu Jingchen fell silent for a moment.
"What if I forbid it?" Yu Jingchen's tone softened slightly. Nan Zhiyun thought that she must have said something to displease him. After all, Yu Jingchen was the emperor, the Son of Heaven.
"Your Majesty, please forgive me," Nan Zhiyun stood up and then knelt down respectfully to beg for forgiveness.
Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun kneeling in front of him without speaking or calling her to get up. Nan Zhiyun's heart began to panic again; she was naturally still afraid of Yu Jingchen.
"It's too late." After a long silence, Yu Jingchen finally uttered those two words. Nan Zhiyun felt uneasy; she didn't know what Yu Jingchen meant by that.
“If you had thought this way earlier, perhaps I would have gone along with you. But now I cannot meet your request, so I will not agree.” Yu Jingchen stood up from his seat.
Then he went to help Nan Zhiyun up, but Nan Zhiyun dodged him. Yu Jingchen's lips curled slightly, and his expression gradually turned cold.
"Afraid?" Yu Jingchen lifted Nan Zhiyun's chin. Looking at Yu Jingchen's expression, Nan Zhiyun felt fear mixed with heartache.
“But if you’re really afraid, then you shouldn’t have said those things,” Yu Jingchen said, his tone gentle yet inexplicably unsettling.
