A suffocating feeling quickly washed over her. Nan Zhiyun gripped her blanket tightly; she wanted to call for help, but she couldn't make a sound, no matter how hard she tried.
Nan Zhiyun struggled to sit up, but she had no strength at all. She felt as if she was being controlled, unable to speak or exert any strength.
A sense of fear washed over her, and Nan Zhiyun felt helpless. Yu Jingchen hadn't noticed anything unusual when he first came out, but he frowned when he got closer and saw Nan Zhiyun's appearance.
"What's wrong?" Yu Jingchen touched Nan Zhiyun's forehead. "Why are you sweating so much?"
When Nan Zhiyun saw Yu Jingchen, she felt a little calmer, but she couldn't calm down for a while because of the fear she had just felt.
"Hmm? Are you feeling unwell?" Yu Jingchen asked her.
"No... I'm scared..." Nan Zhiyun was probably a little uneasy, so she even changed her form of address to "I".
"What are you afraid of? It's alright, I'm here." Yu Jingchen pulled her into his arms. Because of the strangeness just now, Nan Zhiyun did not avoid Yu Jingchen's actions, but let him hold her, and even took the initiative to pull on Yu Jingchen's robe at the waist.
Yu Jingchen also sensed something was wrong: "What just happened?" he asked.
"No, I was just scared... I couldn't speak just now, and I didn't have any strength..." Nan Zhiyun didn't dare to let go.
"Are you scared? It's okay, don't be afraid." She couldn't speak and had no strength. What kind of description was that? Yu Jingchen assumed that she was scared because she was alone, so her reaction was temporarily restricted.
"No..." Nan Zhiyun suddenly said this, and Yu Jingchen really didn't react.
"What can't you do?" Yu Jingchen asked her.
"Fear, can't be overcome, don't try to overcome it," Nan Zhiyun said, sounding a bit childish. But Yu Jingchen was a little confused by her words. What did she mean?
"I don't understand. What's wrong?" Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun, who was hiding herself tightly in his arms, somewhat bewildered.
"I was afraid of the dark before, and Your Majesty said I should overcome it. This time, I am still afraid, but I don't want to overcome it anymore. I'm scared," Nan Zhiyun said intermittently.
It took Yu Jingchen a while to understand, and he was both amused and exasperated.
It's likely that Nan Zhiyun used to be afraid of the dark, so she would light two candles even when sleeping. She even extinguished the candles, telling Nan Zhiyun that she had to overcome these fears herself. That's probably why Nan Zhiyun is saying what she's doing now; she probably means that she's afraid, can't overcome it, and doesn't want to.
"Are you that scared? I'm right here." Yu Jingchen didn't directly tell her that she didn't need to overcome her fears.
“Even I am afraid of Your Majesty,” Nan Zhiyun added.
Yu Jingchen: "..."
It sounded to him as if Nan Zhiyun was saying, "So what if you're here? Am I afraid of you? It was supposed to be a scary environment, but now that you're here, aren't we watching a scary story in a scary environment?"
"Afraid yet still holding on so tightly?" Yu Jingchen didn't seem to mind.
“I’m scared, I won’t let go,” Nan Zhiyun replied, but… why did this sound so strange to him? It seemed to contradict what she had said earlier…
It's like... I'm just scared, but I just won't relax...
"Then let's not loosen it." Yu Jingchen had no way to deal with her.
Nan Zhiyun didn't respond this time, but remained nestled in Yu Jingchen's arms, not moving. If this continued, Yu Jingchen was starting to suspect that she had fallen asleep.
"Are you resting?" Yu Jingchen asked tentatively.
"The lights cannot be turned off," Nan Zhiyun said.
“No, the lights must be turned off.” Yu Jingchen raised an eyebrow.
Nan Zhiyun made a move and looked up at Yu Jingchen: "No, no, you can't, you can't not overcome it." Nan Zhiyun said "no" several times in a row, but her aggrieved look made her words have no deterrent effect at all.
"We must destroy it. We can, we can, we must overcome it." Yu Jingchen seemed to be deliberately teasing her.
Nan Zhiyun: "..."
"It was gradually getting better before, so why is it not working again now? I'm here, nothing else will happen," Yu Jingchen reassured him.
"No," Nan Zhiyun said succinctly. Was she really going to argue with Yu Jingchen today?
Yu Jingchen called her name, "Nan Zhiyun," his tone light, but his helplessness was genuine.
"Don't turn off the lights..." Nan Zhiyun still did not compromise.
Yu Jingchen sighed; in the end, he was the one who gave in first.
"Then let's not destroy it yet, go to sleep." Yu Jingchen pulled the person out of his arms.
"Is it really not going to go out?" Nan Zhiyun looked at Yu Jingchen cautiously, afraid that he would turn off the light when she wasn't paying attention.
"Bu Mie, get some rest." Yu Jingchen gently put her down, covered her with a blanket, and then lay down to sleep beside her.
Nan Zhiyun's hand, still gripping Yu Jingchen's clothes, was pulled into Yu Jingchen's grasp, and he gently embraced her.
"Sleep peacefully, everything will be alright," Yu Jingchen comforted her.
However, Nan Zhiyun was so nervous that she couldn't sleep at all, so Yu Jingchen gently patted her back to help her relax.
"Your Majesty..." Nan Zhiyun called out in a very soft voice.
"Hmm?" Yu Jingchen responded to him.
But Nan Zhiyun didn't speak again. Yu Jingchen looked at the person in his arms and found that she had fallen asleep. He immediately smiled, and his heart softened a lot.
“You fall asleep quickly,” Yu Jingchen said, pulling her closer and even tidying up the hair that was sticking to Nan Zhiyun’s face.
But... Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun's shoulder, which was half-exposed due to her clothes slipping down, and there were faint scars on it.
Yu Jingchen gently placed his hand on it. In fact, he could hardly feel it anymore just by touching it, but it was really an eyesore to look at.
"I'm sorry..." Yu Jingchen murmured to himself, talking to himself, and no one could hear him.
Yu Jingchen helped her pull her clothes up, then covered her with a quilt, and pulled her closer to him. After doing this, Yu Jingchen looked at the sleeping Nan Zhiyun, thinking that she should be completely asleep by now.
So after thinking about it, he simply waved his hand and used his inner force to extinguish the candle. After doing this, Yu Jingchen carefully observed the sleeping little girl in his arms before finally letting out a sigh of relief.
He was also worried about disturbing Nan Zhiyun, who had just fallen asleep and didn't want to be startled awake. He had always felt that Nan Zhiyun's fear of the dark was something she needed to overcome.
