Chapter 39 Poison

Qianxia tidied up the table for Nan Zhiyun and prepared the writing brush and ink.

Just then, Yu Jingchen brought back the digestive medicine that he had sent to fetch.

"Take this medicine first," Yu Jingchen instructed.

Nan Zhiyun hesitated to take the medicine, as she didn't know what kind of pill it was. Qianxia was also a little nervous.

Yu Jingchen noticed Nan Zhiyun's hesitation, and raised his eyebrows slightly, thinking, "So she does know fear after all."

"Want to know what this is?" Yu Jingchen asked her.

Nan Zhiyun looked at him, and although she didn't dare to ask, her eyes conveyed the same meaning.

Yu Jingchen suddenly had some wicked thoughts, so he deliberately put on a cold face and said, "Of course it's poison. Didn't you yourself list so many crimes? You even mentioned the death penalty, so do you think copying the palace rules a few times is enough?" Yu Jingchen spoke as if it were the truth.

Nan Zhiyun's face paled, while Qianxia immediately knelt down after hearing this.

"Your Majesty, please have mercy! Miss didn't mean it. Miss's stomach has always been weak, but it was a gift from His Majesty, and Miss dared not refuse to eat it, so she couldn't resist. Even if Miss is at fault, she doesn't deserve to die! Please, Your Majesty, have mercy! Please, Your Majesty, have mercy!" Qianxia pleaded.

Yu Jingchen was inexplicably displeased by Qianxia's form of address. He hadn't cared before, but now he didn't like it. So he said, "Now that you've entered the palace, you should abandon your old titles. So do you need someone to tell you how to address me?" Yu Jingchen's tone was unfriendly.

"Yes, Consort Nan, please, Your Majesty, spare me this time!" Qianxia continued to plead.

Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun and asked, "What do you think?"

Nan Zhiyun remained silent.

"Although this medicine is poison, it's not fatal. At most, it makes you wish you were dead. It will flare up three times a month, each time more painful than the last. It's like having your bones gnawed by thousands of ants, an excruciating pain." Yu Jingchen's words became increasingly frightening.

Nan Zhiyun was perhaps genuinely frightened; her face was deathly pale. Seeing this, Yu Jingchen felt it was enough; he knew she was truly terrified, so he asked again, "Want to eat?"

Nan Zhiyun was genuinely afraid, but she also genuinely dared not beg for mercy. Moreover, she didn't believe she could escape punishment by begging. So many people had pleaded with Yu Jingchen for their lives before, and he had never shown a moment of weakness. Especially now, with her being the victim, it was even less likely. She had just been thinking, how could it be simply a matter of copying palace rules a few times? How could Yu Jingchen possibly be merciful?

"This concubine dares not beg for mercy," Nan Zhiyun said, accepting the pills.

"You want to eat?" Yu Jingchen's face darkened again. Even in this state, couldn't he say something he could listen to? He really was asking for trouble.

No sooner had Yu Jingchen finished speaking than Nan Zhiyun swallowed the pill.

"Miss!" Qianxia called out again in a hurry.

Upon seeing this, Yu Jingchen felt an even stronger urge to kill.

"Nan Zhiyun, do you really want to die?!" Yu Jingchen was furious.

Nan Zhiyun had been very nervous after taking her medicine, and Yu Jingchen's shout made her even more flustered.

Yu Jingchen pointed at Nan Zhiyun without saying a word, and finally shouted in an unfriendly tone: "Go and copy the palace rules!"

Nan Zhiyun didn't delay. She didn't know when the medicine would "take effect," so she was uncertain. She only hoped that Yu Jingchen wouldn't be there when the medicine took effect. She already had no face left in front of him, so she didn't want Yu Jingchen to see her in such a disheveled state.
