When the Empress Dowager saw Nan Zhiyun approaching, she quickly pulled her to sit down beside her. Perhaps it was because she was always vulnerable in front of those close to her, but Nan Zhiyun couldn't help but feel wronged.
The Empress Dowager didn't know how to comfort her. Sometimes, crying is a way to release emotions, so she didn't say much. She simply embraced Nan Zhiyun silently, offering her the care she could.
The side hall of Cixi Palace has been prepared, and the Empress Dowager intends for Nan Zhiyun to stay there permanently. Nan Su will be returning to the capital in about a month, and the Empress Dowager doesn't know what will happen during that time, but she will do her best to minimize Nan Zhiyun's injuries.
Now living in Cining Palace, Nan Zhiyun no longer felt the same fear and anxiety as before, but whenever she was alone, she would always think of her past life. Sometimes, Nan Zhiyun really felt weak and useless because she couldn't do anything and was particularly spineless.
But what could she do? Yu Jingchen was a king; perhaps with just a word from him, she and even the entire Nan family couldn't resist. Nan Zhiyun didn't know what would happen in the days to come, whether things would continue like this forever. If things continued this way, then this rebirth would have been meaningless. She didn't know why Heaven had given her this chance to start over, but since she couldn't escape, she could only face it.
In my memories of my previous life, Prince An rebelled... Could this be the same thing? His Majesty is suspicious of my father, so should I do something to dispel that suspicion?
Yesterday, when she heard Yu Jingchen say that Nan Su was coming back, she was shocked because in her previous life, Nan Su was supposed to return at the end of next year... Could there be something else going on? Is His Majesty going to take action against Father now?
Nan Zhiyun felt increasingly uneasy, but that was all she could do. Rather than doing everything herself, she decided to go to the Empress Dowager.
That evening, she dined with the Empress Dowager, who kept her to talk. They were close, and she didn't have anyone else serve her.
"Is something on Yun'er's mind?" Nan Zhiyun was practically raised by the Empress Dowager, and seeing her like this, one could tell that she was hiding something.
"Your Majesty, His Majesty says that Father will be back soon," Nan Zhiyun began.
"He told you everything?" The Empress Dowager seemed somewhat surprised.
"Hmm..." Nan Zhiyun's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Why is Yun'er still like this? A'Su is coming back, aren't you happy?" The Empress Dowager gently pulled her into her arms.
"Your Majesty, I'm scared... I'm afraid something will happen to Father when he comes back this time. I'm afraid the things in my dreams will become reality." Nan Zhiyun knew that the Empress Dowager never believed what she said about her past life, but apart from the Empress Dowager, she couldn't find anyone else now.
"It's just a dream, it won't happen, believe me, okay? Things will be different after Asu comes back this time." The Empress Dowager said meaningfully.
"Your Majesty, please believe Yun'er this time, okay? I'm telling the truth." Nan Zhiyun was almost crying with anxiety.
However, the Empress Dowager simply patted her back gently: "Good girl, then trust me this once, okay? If I say nothing will happen, then nothing will happen." The Empress Dowager seemed quite resolute in her attitude.
Nan Zhiyun looked at the Empress Dowager with red eyes. Perhaps she saw the unyielding authority in the Empress Dowager's eyes, so she slowly lowered her head. Was there really no way to change things...?
The Empress Dowager felt a sharp pain in her heart when she saw Nan Zhiyun's appearance. However, some things couldn't be explained. How could she not know what Nan Zhiyun was saying? She simply didn't want Nan Zhiyun to remain bound by those things.
For several days in a row
Nan Zhiyun never saw Yu Jingchen again. Perhaps because she had given up all hope, she always felt relieved when she couldn't see him. Apart from worrying about her father, she seemed to have no other concerns.
The Empress Dowager probably knew Nan Zhiyun's feelings, so these past few days she'd often spent time with Nan Zhiyun arranging flowers and playing chess together. She wasn't giving Nan Zhiyun much time to overthink or daydream.
On this day, the Empress Dowager was pruning potted plants with Nan Zhiyun as usual when they heard a voice outside: "His Majesty has arrived!"
Nan Zhiyun barely managed to hold on and accidentally injured her hand. The Empress Dowager quickly went to check on her injury.
"How did it happen? How could you be so careless? These scissors are incredibly sharp." Although the Empress Dowager's tone carried a hint of reproach, her worry and concern were unmistakable.
After all, these are pruning shears used for trimming branches; if someone accidentally pricks their hand, they're bound to get hurt. Yu Jingchen frowned slightly upon seeing this scene as soon as he entered.
"Your Majesty, I'm fine," Nan Zhiyun said gently.
Then she saw Yu Jingchen. There was always a slight pressure emanating from him, which made Nan Zhiyun feel fear as soon as she saw him.
"Your Majesty, I pay my respects," Nan Zhiyun said, suppressing the urge in her heart. Having been staying with the Empress Dowager recently, Nan Zhiyun's complexion had improved considerably.
Yu Jingchen glanced at her coldly, and naturally noticed that Nan Zhiyun's hand was still bleeding.
"Useless thing." Yu Jingchen said, referring to Nan Zhiyun. Upon hearing this, Nan Zhiyun's face paled slightly.
The Empress Dowager frowned slightly, pulled Nan Zhiyun up, and shielded her from view. Then she looked at Yu Jingchen and asked, "What brings Your Majesty here today?"
"Does Your Majesty think I can devour her?" Yu Jingchen replied irrelevantly, feeling inexplicably displeased that the Empress Dowager treated him like a thief.
