Yu Jingchen didn't offer any reminders or say anything else. He picked up the things Nan Zhiyun had just copied. This girl had only managed to copy a few pages after all this time? At this rate, even if she had another night, she wouldn't finish. If he followed the punishment he suggested, she'd probably be beaten to death.
However, Yu Jingchen didn't rush to say anything. Instead, he looked at what Nan Zhiyun had copied today. He didn't know what Nan Zhiyun had written before, so... his face darkened when he saw it.
He slammed the Xuan paper onto the table with a thud, and his hand followed suit. Because of the force of his hand, the table shook. Nan Zhiyun was so frightened that she trembled all over. She didn't know why Yu Jingchen had suddenly lost his temper again.
"Is this the mistake you made?" Yu Jingchen asked.
“Yes…” Nan Zhiyun replied. Huh? She finally realized that she could speak again, but before she could be happy, she was stunned by Yu Jingchen’s anger.
"Tell me, what did you do wrong?" Yu Jingchen threw the papers on the ground.
"...Your Majesty, I shouldn't have lied to you about going to Cixi Palace and staying there all this time." Nan Zhiyun had only just come up with this idea, and she thought it counted.
Hearing her words, Yu Jingchen's anger flared up. He had asked her to think about the wrong things she had done that day, and after writing for over an hour, this was all she had written?
"You're really something else! Copy it all again, now!" Yu Jingchen was furious. Nan Zhiyun had no idea what she had done wrong, and now she had to copy it all again?
"Please enlighten me, Your Majesty..." Nan Zhiyun kowtowed.
"What's the use of me telling you? Think for yourself, and if I'm not satisfied, rewrite it." Yu Jingchen threw away everything she had just copied.
Nan Zhiyun had just spent so much time copying, and now she had to copy everything again, only to have Yu Jingchen throw away her copy. Moreover, she genuinely didn't know where she had gone wrong; how was she supposed to find ten mistakes?
Nan Zhiyun felt very wronged, but she didn't dare to say anything, so she could only hold it in. Her eyes were full of tears, but she could only suppress them.
“Yes…” Nan Zhiyun sniffed, she dared not cry.
Yu Jingchen was surprised that someone like her could cry, and said with some displeasure, "Raise your head."
Nan Zhiyun slowly raised her head, her eyes already brimming with tears, a hint of suppressed emotion in them. Her pitiful appearance was heartbreaking. Yu Jingchen was slightly taken aback when he saw Nan Zhiyun like this, but he quickly suppressed this unusual emotion.
"Why are you crying? Compared to what happened before, this is already giving you a lot of face. How dare you cry? We haven't even settled all those scores for you today, and now you can't even handle this little punishment?" Yu Jingchen said coldly. Nan Zhiyun remained silent; she just couldn't hold back, feeling extremely upset and wronged.
Yu Jingchen was furious when he saw her remain silent. Fortunately, he was speechless. What were these two doing? Your Majesty, can you please not be so hurtful with your words?
"Your Majesty, it's getting late. Would you like to rest?" Xing Lai broke the awkward silence, though he admitted he said it on purpose. He wanted to see if His Majesty could actually sleep while Consort Shu was busy copying things.
"Put out the candles," Yu Jingchen ordered.
Nan Zhiyun's heart tightened upon hearing this; she was afraid of the dark. Yu Jingchen hadn't actually stayed here for an entire night before, and he didn't come for long periods, so Nan Zhiyun always kept a candle lit before going to bed, ensuring at least one lamp was left on in the room.
"Your Majesty, Consort Shu still needs to copy things, so this is going to be destroyed..." Xinglai said this on purpose.
"There's no room outside, so go outside and search. I think we can find a spot inside the courtyard." Yu Jingchen was in a bad mood.
But Xinglai knew very well that if His Majesty were truly determined to punish someone, he would never act this way. Nan Zhiyun knelt there like an abandoned child, completely bewildered.
"What are you kneeling there for? Can't you get up?" Yu Jingchen was furious just looking at her. Nan Zhiyun looked at the few pieces of paper that had been thrown on the ground and silently stood up.
"Take everything away," Yu Jingchen said again.
Yu Jingchen had just told Nan Zhiyun to go outside to the courtyard to continue copying, so she thought he really meant it. Even Xinglai was a little surprised. Was he really going to do it for real? Would he really be copying all night? And it's so cold outside!
"Your Majesty, should someone be watching when we copy in the courtyard?" Xing Lai probed indirectly, trying to find out if Yu Jingchen really meant it that way.
"I told you to remove all of these," Yu Jingchen said, somewhat annoyed. Was what he said really that hard to understand?
"Yes," Xinglai immediately understood; it meant he wouldn't copy it today.
Nan Zhiyun had been standing by the side the whole time, still feeling unwell, and had no idea what was going on.
"Aren't you sleepy?" Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun, who was still standing there dumbfounded, and suddenly wondered if there was something wrong with her brain. Why was she so slow to react no matter what it was?
Upon hearing this, Nan Zhiyun looked at Yu Jingchen, bewildered, her eyes still red. Yu Jingchen, having given up, didn't want to argue anymore and went to rest, leaving Nan Zhiyun still confused.
Not to mention Yu Jingchen, even Xing Lai felt anxious seeing Nan Zhiyun like this. Your Highness, are you paralyzed with fear? Don't be so oblivious!
"Your Highness, let me help you rest." Qianxia finally came to her senses and took the initiative to speak. Nan Zhiyun was still not in a good mood, and only after Qianxia spoke did she look at Yu Jingchen, who had already walked away.
"I haven't finished copying yet..." Nan Zhiyun felt her hands were sore just looking at all these things.
"Oh dear, Your Majesty means you don't need to continue copying tonight. It's alright, you can rest early." Xinglai was really anxious to death.
Nan Zhiyun had just realized that this might be what it meant, but she still couldn't believe it. After all, today had passed by so easily.
"Your Majesty, please go quickly, or His Majesty will get angry again," Xinglai added.
Nan Zhiyun hesitated for a long time before finally walking over. Yu Jingchen saw her coming but didn't say anything, but what was she supposed to do next? Nan Zhiyun hesitated again.
"Do you intend to stand here all night?" Yu Jingchen's icy voice rang out. Fortunately, upon hearing Yu Jingchen's tone, she knew things were not good. His Majesty was truly losing patience. If this continued, he would likely become angry soon.
