"If you're free, you can have something to eat," Yu Jingchen said to Nan Zhiyun. Nan Zhiyun glanced at the things in front of her; there was a table with grapes and other things on it.
However, she didn't move, and Yu Jingchen didn't say anything either, letting her do as she pleased. The teahouse was quite close by, so the carriage stopped after a short while, and Nan Zhiyun began to look forward to it.
"Your Majesty, we've arrived," Xinglai called out from outside. Yu Jingchen took off his veil and then helped Nan Zhiyun down from the carriage. Xinglai saw this and silently took two steps back.
"Alright, we're here," Yu Jingchen said, then put Nan Zhiyun down and put the veil on her head.
"Don't show your face in crowded places," Yu Jingchen said.
Nan Zhiyun didn't know the reason either, and of course, she didn't dare to ask too much. Anyway, it was just a hat, so she might as well wear it.
"Can you walk by yourself?" Yu Jingchen asked her, reaching out to support her. Nan Zhiyun tried to walk, but she couldn't manage just one step. The next moment, well, she was suspended in mid-air again, picked up by Yu Jingchen, attracting the attention of passersby.
The teahouse was already quite full, but luckily we had arranged our seats early. We got a spot on the second floor with a great view and a nice environment.
Not only that, the servants behind her also brought a lot of food. Nan Zhiyun watched as they replaced all the food on the table and put the food she had prepared on top. Wasn't that a bit too much?
"Don't eat things from outside indiscriminately. You don't know if these things are really clean, especially since you're in a special situation right now, so you need to be even more careful," Yu Jingchen explained. Nan Zhiyun felt he had gone a bit too far, but she didn't say anything more.
"It's about to start. Are there any other questions?" Yu Jingchen asked.
Nan Zhiyun shook her head. Okay, seeing her shake her head, Yu Jingchen didn't say anything more. Soon, the servants below arrived.
Nan Zhiyun had rarely seen such a scene before; she had mostly watched it rather than listened to it. Moreover, these storytellers always liked to linger on the most exciting parts, so she didn't like waiting and ended up buying the book directly.
Today's storyteller tells the tale of a little fox who falls in love with a mortal. The mortal rescues the injured little fox, and after spending some time with him, the little fox develops feelings for him beyond gratitude.
For this love, the little fox tried her best to transform into a human. However, by the time she transformed into a young girl and wanted to repay his kindness, the mortal had already reached his twilight years. She watched him leave before her eyes, heartbroken. Later, she thought of waiting for his reincarnation, but when that time truly came, she could no longer find him.
To find this mortal, the little fox didn't hesitate to harm innocent people and use forbidden magic to endanger all living beings. She finally found the mortal, who was then the son of a great general. The little fox accompanied him as he grew up, secretly helping him to grow up safely and embark on his official career.
One day, that mortal became the great general in everyone's hearts... but the little fox was hated, and she accidentally exposed her identity and was condemned by the world.
She had thought her general would protect her, but he didn't. Not only that, the general in her heart wanted to act on behalf of Heaven and kill her...
Nan Zhiyun listened intently, tears welling up in her eyes without her even realizing it. Yu Jingchen had never been interested in these kinds of stories, but he had been keeping a close eye on Nan Zhiyun.
She seemed a little off now, but because of the veil, her expression couldn't be seen, so I couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong?"
Nan Zhiyun snapped out of her reverie and gently shook her head. But how could Yu Jingchen be so easily fooled?
"If you're unhappy, just say so. Why are you trying to hide it?" Yu Jingchen frowned slightly. Nan Zhiyun remained silent. Yu Jingchen looked down, perhaps because of the story this person was telling?
"It's just a story, it doesn't count." Yu Jingchen picked up the cup beside him.
“But… the little fox will truly be in despair…” Nan Zhiyun suddenly said. Yu Jingchen paused, his hand holding the cup still, and looked at Nan Zhiyun. Then he listened as she continued, “The little fox has harmed people, but even if she wronged the world, she would never wrong that general. Yet, in the end, it was that general who dealt her the most fatal blow, not only physically but also emotionally. Even if her crimes are unforgivable, that general is the least qualified to condemn her, because everything he has now is largely because of the little fox.” Nan Zhiyun whispered, and Yu Jingchen never expected to hear such words from her.
Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun. Did this woman really think that feelings were such a simple thing?
"Do you really think that as long as that fox likes it, that's enough?" Yu Jingchen asked rhetorically, and Nan Zhiyun didn't know how to answer.
“If it’s a relationship between two people, and only one person cares, then not being liked is the original sin. She willingly went up there, so who can she blame? She doesn’t respect herself, she doesn’t cherish herself. She gave away her dignity and integrity with both hands. What she can easily give away, why should she expect others to cherish it? Nan Zhiyun, do you think that once you like someone, you have to make that person like you back?” Yu Jingchen’s tone wasn’t very kind, and Nan Zhiyun didn’t know how to refute him.
"If you can't even do self-respect, self-love, self-esteem, and self-reliance yourself, how can you expect others to do it?" Yu Jingchen told her.
“But…some things are beyond our control,” Nan Zhiyun explained, then thought of refuting her statement.
"Why can't you control yourself? Why can't you let go?" Yu Jingchen asked in return.
