Of course, Yu Jingchen didn't say the last part aloud: Yu Jing'an… he had never taken him seriously. He had kept him around before because of Nan Su's military power; aside from Nan Su, Yu Jing'an was the first person he would deal with. But now… who knows what Yu Jingchen was planning.
Nan Zhiyun seemed to want to say something after hearing Yu Jingchen's words. It was something she had experienced in her previous life, how could she not care? How could she really just treat it as a dream? However... it was truly unexpected that Nan Zhiyun could say such a thing.
Yu Jingchen probably sensed Nan Zhiyun's emotions, and before she could speak, he stopped her, saying, "Alright, that's enough. Don't think about it so much, okay?"
Nan Zhiyun opened her mouth, but ultimately said nothing. Yu Jingchen patted her head and asked, "Does your foot hurt? Did you twist it while walking around?" Yu Jingchen was still concerned about her foot.
Nan Zhiyun shook her head, not wanting to aggravate her foot injury; she had actually been very careful with her movements just now.
"Don't walk barefoot on the ground next time. The ground is already cold, and it's easy to get hurt. What if you accidentally step on something?" Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun's exposed feet. Apart from the redness and swelling of her ankle, she seemed to be fine.
Nan Zhiyun listened to Yu Jingchen's words without speaking, her eyes following his movements. In truth, Yu Jingchen was indeed different now than before, but… Nan Zhiyun couldn't let go of the knot in her heart; the Empress Dowager had come today.
He talked to himself for a long time, and among the questions he asked her was, "Do you still want to leave, Yun'er? Compared to before, have you noticed that His Majesty treats you differently now?"
How could Nan Zhiyun be completely oblivious? But could such a thing be something to yearn for or cling to? Then what did the Empress Dowager say? She said… “Yun’er, there are some things I haven’t taught you before, but you must know that to achieve your goal, anything that can be used is acceptable. Even if it’s unscrupulous, it’s all acceptable to achieve your objective, understand?”
To achieve their goals, they would stop at nothing and use everything around them. When Nan Zhiyun heard the Empress Dowager say these things to her, she was bewildered, as she didn't really understand them.
“Just like His Majesty, he is different now than before, Yun’er. Perhaps… some things need to be changed, so… you should know what you want, right?” The Empress Dowager was very serious, and Nan Zhiyun took it to heart when she heard it, but… she herself had never tried it.
Thinking of all this, she lowered her head. Actually, Nan Zhiyun was really scared at first, because in front of Yu Jingchen, she felt that everything about her was exposed. But... she was really unwilling. She had never done anything outrageous before. She... Nan Zhiyun felt a surge of grievance.
Yu Jingchen didn't understand why she was acting like this again. He assumed she was still thinking about the "dream" she had just experienced, so he simply held her in his arms and gently comforted her.
"After your father returns, I will have him come over here directly. But it's still early, so would you like to eat something first?" Yu Jingchen asked her.
"I don't want to eat..." Nan Zhiyun's voice was still trembling with tears. Yu Jingchen wasn't angry; if she didn't want to eat, so be it. After all, she would have to eat eventually when Nan Su came back.
"Shall we take the medicine first? Is that alright?" Yu Jingchen asked.
Nan Zhiyun nodded. Yu Jingchen breathed a slight sigh of relief when he saw that she was willing to take the medicine. He had thought that Nan Zhiyun would also refuse, after all... she probably wouldn't trust him and wouldn't dare to take the medicine. So he was a little surprised when Nan Zhiyun agreed directly.
Yu Jingchen instructed the palace servants outside to bring in the medicine that Nan Zhiyun was going to drink today. He took the medicine; the temperature was just right, not too hot.
"Do you want to drink it yourself? Or what?" Yu Jingchen asked her. Nan Zhiyun reached out her hand, and Yu Jingchen handed her the medicine bowl. Nan Zhiyun's hands were actually very small, and holding the bowl like this, she looked strangely cute.
"Drink it, it'll get cold soon," Yu Jingchen reminded her. Nan Zhiyun glanced at it, hesitated for a second or two, and then drank it all.
It was really bitter. After Nan Zhiyun finished drinking it, her brows furrowed. Yu Jingchen found it amusing, but... well, there were no candied fruits or anything. How could someone like Yu Jingchen possibly prepare those things?
"Afraid of bitterness?" Yu Jingchen started a conversation.
Nan Zhiyun nodded. She was afraid of hardship and pain, afraid of the dark, and afraid of being alone.
"Then don't get sick. If you take good care of your body, you won't need to take medicine," Yu Jingchen said.
Nan Zhiyun: "..." She wished she could make that decision herself, but it was impossible, given her body...
Yu Jingchen noticed that Nan Zhiyun was in low spirits, so he didn't continue speaking. After reapplying the medicine for her, he returned to the table. However, Yu Jingchen still had Xinglai bring in the remaining memorials from outside.
However, it was almost time, so before Yu Jingchen could finish dealing with the situation, someone came to report from outside.
"Your Majesty, General Nan Su's carriages have arrived outside the city." Upon hearing this, Yu Jingchen raised his head, and Nan Zhiyun's eyes lit up the instant she heard it.
"Has the Empress Dowager been informed?" Yu Jingchen asked the Empress Dowager after glancing at Nan Zhiyun.
"We've already informed the Empress Dowager, but she said it's too late today and we'll meet again tomorrow," the palace servant replied.
