at night
Gu Yin entered the palace, of course, secretly, so no one noticed. However, no one knew what he did inside.
However, the Empress Dowager, who had been guarding Consort Shu, finally returned to Cixi Palace that night. She had been keeping watch for two days, and Anxin was very worried seeing the Empress Dowager like this.
The good news was that Nan Zhiyun showed signs of waking up shortly after the Empress Dowager left. She felt as if she had seen her entire life in a dream, except that in that life, her relationship with Yu Jingchen seemed somewhat different from now; she was very dependent on him, and he was very gentle and patient.
Her heart ached, but she couldn't pinpoint the reason. Nan Zhiyun slowly opened her eyes. The scene before her began to shift from the dream, the current environment both familiar and strange. Her consciousness gradually cleared, and the things in front of her became clearer.
This is... He'an Palace.
"Your Highness, you're awake?" The palace servants who were attending to Nan Zhiyun quickly came up to her when they saw that she had woken up.
Nan Zhiyun glanced at her. This person wasn't Qianxia. Oh, right, she was awake now; it wasn't a dream anymore.
"This servant will go and summon the imperial physician immediately," the palace maid said, and then sent someone to fetch the imperial physician. Nan Zhiyun, however, had shown no particular expression from the beginning.
The imperial physician came in to take Nan Zhiyun's pulse, but Nan Zhiyun kept staring at the ceiling of the bed the whole time, showing no interest in the physician's diagnosis.
"How is Consort Shu?" the palace maid asked.
"Now that Consort Shu has regained consciousness, there's nothing seriously wrong. She just needs a few days of rest to recover," the imperial physician replied. The palace maids were relieved; if anything happened to Consort Shu, none of them would be able to escape.
The imperial physician prescribed the medicine and left, but he remained in the He'an Palace, afraid that something unexpected might happen.
"Your Highness?" The palace maid was naturally very worried when she saw that Nan Zhiyun had not spoken.
"Get out," Nan Zhiyun coldly uttered. The palace maid dared not disobey, but she was also worried about leaving Nan Zhiyun alone in He'an Palace.
However, she ultimately didn't get in the way, but she didn't go too far either, just watching from the entrance. Nan Zhiyun didn't think much of it, or perhaps she just didn't notice.
Her mind was a jumbled mess. She remembered everything from her past life: how she shielded Yu Jingchen from a sword, how she spent her life with him, and how she faked her death to escape… Her emotions were complex.
She suddenly remembered the scene in the sea of fire, how Yu Jingchen, dizzy and unable to stand, still carried her as they tried to escape the flames, how he had the palace servants take her away, and how he asked her if she hated him. And what was his last sentence? He asked if this fire could fulfill his wish…
Her eyes were already wet, but she couldn't express her feelings. Did she regret it? It seemed not; she hadn't done anything wrong. Did she feel sorry for herself? What did she have to feel sorry for? If she did feel sorry for herself, then who would feel sorry for her?
So… how is he? When she came out, she seemed to see that Zichen Palace was almost completely engulfed in flames. The eaves were also beginning to collapse. He hadn't left when she came out. So what is his current situation?
Nan Zhiyun naturally didn't believe he was gone. If that were true, the palace would probably be in chaos by now. But if he was alright, then what was he doing now? Why wasn't he here? Was it because of anger and rage?
Nan Zhiyun closed her eyes. She suddenly felt a little irritated. Why was she even thinking about these things? Were they even important? What did his life or death have to do with her? Hadn't she already said she didn't care?
But... whenever Nan Zhiyun tried to calm down, those things would involuntarily resurface in her mind. Her heart ached; these past relationships were all different, which made it difficult for her to see things clearly.
But no matter how chaotic her emotions were, she couldn't let go of Yu Jingchen... In her past life, she watched helplessly as her father was killed by him, as well as the Empress Dowager perished in a sea of fire, as the Nan family was wiped out, and as he repeatedly plundered her.
But why was she feeling so bad? In that instant, Nan Zhiyun suddenly felt incredibly pathetic. She should hate him, even want Yu Jingchen dead, but now, with the memories of these past lives intertwined, she suddenly wondered if this really had to continue indefinitely? And if it did, what good would it do?
But when it comes to truly letting go, it's not that easy. In her dream, she vividly witnessed her previous lives, and all the accumulated emotions made her hesitant and unable to see herself clearly anymore.
"How long have I been asleep?" Nan Zhiyun finally asked.
"Your Highness, you have been asleep for three days, with the Empress Dowager watching over you the whole time. You only just returned today," the palace maid replied truthfully.
"I'm sorry to have worried the Empress Dowager. Please don't disturb her." Nan Zhiyun's voice was very soft.
"Yes," even the palace maid knew her place.
"Where is my father?" Nan Zhiyun continued to ask.
"General Nan has also come, but the weather has turned cool these past few days, and General Nan has been too worried about Her Majesty, so he's not feeling well. Her Majesty the Empress Dowager told him to rest. The imperial physician went to check on him and said there's nothing seriously wrong, just that he shouldn't overexert himself." The palace maid wasn't lying, but to prevent Nan Zhiyun from worrying, she added the rest of the story. Sure enough, hearing this, Nan Zhiyun felt much more at ease.
"Mmm," Nan Zhiyun responded.
The room suddenly fell silent again, and at that moment, thunder began to rumble outside. Nan Zhiyun naturally reacted to the thunder as well.
