The old village chief and Mai Zizi breathed a sigh of relief, their faces beaming with joy.
Su Jinxia saw through the magistrate's intention; he was clearly trying to deceive her.
"How can we save her?" Su Jin asked urgently.
"According to the law, we should first resettle the refugees and then help them rebuild their homes." The magistrate said it lightly, but making promises is one thing, and actually doing it is another.
Su Jin pressed further: "But so many trees have been cut down on West Mountain, and the soil is already loose. The county magistrate must know very well that this village is no longer habitable. What should be done?"
The magistrate gritted his teeth, thinking to himself that Su Jin was a difficult person to deal with.
"Whether it's habitable or not requires an expert assessment. Even if it's not habitable, it needs to be reported to the imperial court. This is not something I can decide on my own. If you're worried, young lady, you might as well stay here and see how I handle it step by step!"
The magistrate knew that Su Jin was just a passerby and couldn't possibly stay and wait. This matter involved the imperial court in the capital, and it might take three to five months to get a result.
The old village chief sighed. He couldn't let Su Jinxia worry about this anymore; the result was already very good.
He bowed and said, "Thank you, Magistrate."
Su Jin glanced at the old village chief, then gave up and said no more.
After leaving the county government office, the old village chief was moved to tears, saying, "Thank you so much, Miss Su and Miss Mai, for speaking up for justice."
If it weren't for these two young ladies today, he would definitely be dead.
Su Jinxia helped the old village chief up, saying, "Old village chief, there's no need for this. Although the government has agreed, they may not do their best."
"This result is already very good." The old village chief said as he walked away, "I have to hurry back and tell everyone this good news."
Su Jin pulled him back, "Don't rush, let's go eat something first, and then buy some food to take back for everyone."
Filling one's stomach is the most important thing.
The old village chief nodded repeatedly, "The young lady is very thoughtful."
So the three of them found a restaurant and sat down to eat.
Su Jin felt that the county magistrate was no kind person and remained worried, losing her appetite.
After the meal, Su Jin helped the old village chief into the carriage. Suddenly, a commotion broke out ahead, and a group of soldiers escorted a carriage as it drove by.
The carriage was discreet and well-concealed, making it impossible to tell who was inside.
Pedestrians quickly made way for them, peering out curiously.
Su Jin also pulled her own carriage further inside.
"Miss Su!"
Suddenly, a sound of surprise rang out.
Su Jinxia turned around curiously, and a woman beside the carriage ran towards her with a smile on her face.
Su Jin felt the woman looked familiar, but couldn't quite place her.
The woman stopped in front of Su Jin's lower body, looked at Su Jin's puzzled expression, and said, "I am Zhou Lian, don't you remember me, young lady?"
Su Jin suddenly realized, "You've become even more beautiful in the months since I last saw you."
Su Jinxia really didn't recognize that this was Zhou Lian, the lady who had kidnapped her. Her appearance had changed a lot, and her spirit was completely different.
"You flatter me, young lady." Zhou Lian smiled shyly. "You are truly a beauty of heaven; I spotted you at a glance in the crowd."
Su Jin stepped down from the carriage and raised her chin. "What are you now?"
Zhou Lian looked at Su Jinxia with eyes full of gratitude, "Thanks to you, Miss, I went to Tianyang City and am doing very well now."
The carriage seemed to stop upon hearing Zhou Lian's movement, and the curtain of the small window was lifted, revealing a handsome man's face.
Their eyes met, and Su Jin guessed that this might be Han Qing, the honest official she had once recommended.
Zhou Lian ran back and hurriedly said, "Young master, this is Su Jinxia, Miss Su, whom I told you about."
A slight smile crept across Su Jin's lips; it seemed the village was saved.
Su Jin stepped forward and said politely, "I have long heard that Magistrate Han is an honest and upright official who saves people from suffering. I am fortunate to see his true face."
Zhou Lian whispered a reminder, "He's the prefect now."
Su Jin took a deep breath, her face showing embarrassment, "Excuse me."
"It's alright," Han Qing replied calmly and kindly.
Su Jin thought for a moment, then, without beating around the bush, said directly, "I have some things I'd like to report. I wonder if the Prefect has the time?"
Han Qing was somewhat surprised, but still agreed, "There are too many people here, blocking the way, it's not suitable for discussing business. Miss, please come with me to a place to stay."
"good."
Su Jin agreed and hurried back, taking out all the money she had and handing it to the old village chief, saying, "Go and buy food for everyone first, and we'll meet at the city gate."
"How can this be accepted?" The old village chief refused to accept it.
Su Jinxia knew that the old village chief didn't have much money on him, but so many people in the village were waiting for food.
"Take it."
Su Jin insisted on giving the money to the old village chief, gave Mai Zizi and the driver a few more instructions, and then returned to the car.
Han Qing suddenly stared intently at Su Jin's waist.
Su Jin followed Han Qing's gaze downwards and noticed that half of the Lone Shadow Token was protruding from inside the belt.
Su Jin instantly became wary and pushed the token inside to hide it.
Han Qing's gaze towards Su Jinxia was completely different now, filled with deep inquiry.
"Come on in the car, young lady, let's talk," Han Qing suddenly invited.
Zhou Lian gasped in surprise. Good heavens! The young master was always very clean and never allowed anyone else into his carriage.
Su Jin subconsciously realized that Han Qing had recognized the Lone Shadow Token, and hesitated, after all, the Lone Shadow Society had a terrible reputation in the martial arts world.
But thinking of the village, he gritted his teeth and got into the car.
The two sat facing each other, and Su Jin couldn't help but marvel at Han Qing's long legs that seemed to have nowhere to go.
Han Qing was not only handsome, but also had a great physique. He wore a moon-white robe, which gave him an air of elegance.
The carriage was clean, piled high with books, and filled with the faint scent of books.
