Chapter 16: City Trip
The tractor drove for forty minutes and arrived directly in Chen City. Xia Wanyang was glad that she didn't eat too much in the morning, otherwise she would have vomited and was very shaken.
Gu Xiuyuan wanted to ask Xia Wanyang to go with him, but thinking that she was unwilling to go with them to get food yesterday, he thought she would probably refuse if he asked her this time.
After thinking about it for a long time, I still didn't say anything.
Xu Jiaojiao and Wang Jing left alone. Wang Yan and Duan Xiaoyu asked Xia Wanyang if she wanted to go shopping together, but were also rejected. They agreed to go back at three o'clock in the afternoon and then went their separate ways.
Xia Wanyang went to the post office first. The post office was crowded with people, and she finally squeezed in. She took out the package that Xia's mother had sent her earlier, which contained a mattress and some heavier items.
Afterwards, she handed the letters she had written to the staff and watched them being put into the mailbox. Then, she came to the place where she could make a phone call. There was already a long line here. Time passed by minute by minute, and finally it was Xia Wanyang's turn.
She carefully handed the phone number of Xia's father's office to the staff. After a few beeps, a familiar voice came from the other end of the line: "Hello? Who is this?" After just two beeps, the call was connected.
"Dad, I'm Yangyang. I've settled down there. Tell Mom not to worry. I wrote letters to her and my family. Please tell her that she should read the letters to her secretly." After she finished speaking, her eyes turned red. It has been less than half a month since she was reborn, and she has already left home again.
Xia Qingshan felt very uncomfortable when he heard his daughter's voice. Thinking of the suffering she had endured in her previous life, he felt extremely distressed: "Yangyang, your mom has already told dad about your situation. Dad supports you in whatever you want to do, just like your mom does. Your mom has already given dad the things. Dad thanks you."
Xia Wanyang was stunned, "It's okay, Dad."
The father and daughter talked for a few more words before reluctantly hanging up the phone.
She walked several streets carrying the big package before finding a place to carry it. She then took out two bottles of Moutai and put them in her backpack. Then, Xia Wanyang took the note her father gave her before she left and went to the police station.
"Hello, comrade. I'm looking for Director Fan."
The receptionist looked at Xia Wanyang, stunned for a moment, and then asked, "Who are you?"
"I am an educated youth sent to the countryside. I am here to visit Uncle Fan on behalf of my elders."
After a while, the young policeman brought Xia Wanyang to Director Fan's office. After explaining the situation, the young policeman left with a red face.
"Uncle Fan, I am Xia Wanyang, the daughter of Xia Qingshan. My father asked me to come and visit you." After saying that, she took out two bottles of Moutai from her bag.
Fan Guangrong is in his fifties this year. He retired from the army due to injury 20 years ago and then returned to his hometown to work as a civilian. If Xia Qingshan had not blocked the attack for him, he would not have been injured so easily.
"My daughter, your father called me. If you don't come today, I plan to visit you in the next few days. Take the things back. Your father's children are just like my own children. What kind of wine did you give to your uncle?"
Xia Wanyang blocked Uncle Fan's hand and said, "I didn't buy this wine. My parents asked me to bring it to you. If you don't accept it, I can only mail it back to them. I don't drink!"
Xia Wanyang brought the wine specially, fearing that her father's friends would not accept it. Sure enough, Fan Guangrong laughed after hearing this, "Your father still remembers my preferences. I haven't seen him for many years."
At noon, Fan Guangrong took Xia Wanyang to a state-owned restaurant for lunch. "My daughter, you are here to join the queue. If you have any problem, just look for Uncle Fan. Remember my office phone number. You must come to me for dinner when you come to the city. Let your aunt make delicious food for you. Your father and I have a life-long friendship. You must treat me as your own uncle!"
After dinner, Xia Wanyang said goodbye to Uncle Fan and went to the scrap yard to look for her high school textbooks. It was now 1974, and the college entrance examination would be resumed in three years. She wanted to take Zhang Shiye with her to take the exam.
When I arrived at the scrap yard, I unexpectedly ran into two familiar people.
"Comrade Xiao Xia, we are really destined to meet. We have only been apart for two days and we meet again?"
Xia Wanyang looked up and saw the old couple who had eaten dumplings with her on the train. "Uncle and Madam, why are you here?"
"Hehe, my grandson has started a family in Shanghai, and we two old guys can't stay at home. We are too old to go out and work, so the scrap recycling station is the best place for us!" said the old lady, holding Xia Wanyang's hand.
The old man also smiled, "What are you looking for, Xiao Xia?"
"Uncle and Auntie, I'm not going to the countryside. I don't have anything to do. I just want to find some books to read!"
The old man turned and walked inside. "It's better to arrive at the right time than to arrive early. I just collected a batch of books. I'll bring them all for you to choose from!"
Xia Wanyang followed him, "No, it's too heavy, I can go and see it myself!"
When they came in, a mountain of books came into view. Wow, there was really all kinds of things. Xia Wanyang didn't mind the dirtiness and looked around. Finally, she found three complete sets of mathematics, physics and chemistry books, and two notebooks. The handwriting was beautiful, and it was obvious that the books were very serious.
Xia Wanyang carefully arranged the books as if they were treasures. The old lady found some ropes and brown paper for her and said, "Xiao Xia, wrap them up quickly. If someone sees them, it will cause trouble."
"Auntie, just call me Yangyang from now on. That's what my parents call me!"
"Hey, come and find me when you come to the city next time, and I will cook for you." The old couple really like her. She looks soft and sweet, but she has a hot temper and is kind. It is rare to have such a straightforward daughter.
After leaving the scrap yard, it was almost the appointed time. Xia Wanyang found a secluded place to put the books into the space, and took out the big package. She had everything, so there was no need to spend any more money. Besides, with such a big package, she could take out whatever she wanted when the time comes, and she didn't have to be afraid of others asking. She could just say it was sent from home.
When there were 20 minutes left, Xia Wanyang came to the tractor. Gu Xiuyuan, Zheng Yu, Duan Xiaoyu, Wang Yan, Huang Chen, Chen Qi and Li Xiang had all returned. Li Xiang saw her jump off the tractor and said, "Sister Yang, how much stuff did Aunt Gu mail for you?"
Gu Xiuyuan retracted his foot that was about to jump down. Zheng Yu wanted to laugh when he saw his lonely eyes. This kid has been a favored child since he was young, but his grandfather was a peasant. His mother registered him privately in order to win favor in front of his grandfather.
You know what, ever since he went to the countryside, his grandfather really looks at his mother differently. Just now, his grandfather praised him on the phone, saying that he is the child who is most like himself among all the younger generations.
Xia Wanyang took out three big meat buns from her bag and handed them to Zhou Yan, who was a little hesitant to take them.
"Here, take it. You took up a lot of your time by sending us to the city. Take it and eat it!"
Zhou Yan had heard his brother talk about this beautiful educated youth when he returned home. He never expected that she was not only beautiful, but also so enthusiastic?
"Thanks!"
Wang Jing and Xu Jiaojiao returned two minutes before three o'clock. As soon as Xu Jiaojiao got in the car, she glared at Xia Wanyang fiercely.
"Xu Jiaojiao, do you really not want your eyes anymore?" Xia Wanyang also glared at her, not at all inferior.
Xu Jiaojiao retracted her gaze and lowered her head to think. She could speak without restraint before because she had her father to back her up. Although she was not favored at home, her father would never let herself get into trouble and discredit him for the sake of his own future.
But she just called home and her younger sister told her that her father had not been home for three days and her mother was nowhere to be found. Her younger brothers and sisters had been relying on help from neighbors to barely get enough food these days. Something must have happened at home.
A week before she went to the countryside, she heard his father and mother whispering that they wanted to severely suppress Xia Qingshan. She had only been away from home for three days, and the house had become like this. What was going on?
