Suddenly, an image flashed through my mind of Fu Yanshen taking care of Xiao Miaomiao while she ate McDonald's.
It was just a fleeting moment, and I braced myself against the bed to get up.
The man's hand quickly withdrew.
After getting out of bed, I turned around. The man on the bed was lying on his side with his eyes closed, seemingly still "asleep".
As I combed my long hair with my fingers, I walked towards the bathroom to wash up and change my clothes.
When he came out, Fu Yanshen had already sat up.
He leaned against the headboard, his face gaunt, his lips dry, his eyes staring blankly at a point, lost in thought, as if shrouded in melancholy.
He didn't come to his senses until I handed him a toothbrush with toothpaste on it.
"Lin Xiao has brought the food; it's in the outer room. Go and eat," Fu Yanshen said gently, looking up at me with a faint smile on his lips.
I nodded, placed the toothbrush cup on the bedside table, and pulled out the spittoon from under the bed for him to rinse his mouth.
It was already afternoon, and I was starving.
Halfway through the meal, I brought in Fu Yanshen's lightly seasoned hospital food, set up a small table on the hospital bed, and laid out the food for him to eat by himself.
"I've had your phone found." Fu Yanshen took a sealed bag from under his pillow and handed it to me.
My eyes lit up when I saw the phone.
My phone contains a lot of important videos and data; it would be a huge problem if I lost it.
The screen is cracked, but it still works normally.
As soon as I opened it, there were countless missed calls, the most numerous being from a familiar number, with 99+ missed calls.
It was Fu Yanshen's old account.
There's also Luo Luo, Mu Ye, Ji Yan, Chen Hanxing...
I took my phone and went out to call them one by one to let them know I was safe, even though they probably already knew I was out of danger.
After finishing the call, I walked towards the ward and was greeted by a familiar woman with a gentle demeanor. She was backlit and getting closer, her fair face becoming clearer and clearer.
Shi Jin.
She wore a beige sleeveless long dress made of chiffon, which was elegant and graceful.
The woman drew closer, her gaze fixed on me, the corners of her lips turned up, her eyes and brows, just like mine, filled with a smile.
She stopped in front of me.
"Miss Sheng, I just got back from out of town. Thank you for taking care of Ashen. It must have been hard work," Shi Jin said with a smile.
Judging from her tone, it was as if she were Fu Yanshen's closest and dearest relative, asserting her ownership over me.
I smiled and said, "I'd also like to ask you to persuade him to stop asking me to take care of him."
Shi Jin's smile froze for a moment, then deepened. "That's because I wasn't there. He... I've been taking care of him personally for the past two years."
As she spoke, she seemed to exude pride.
It felt like the competition for favor among concubines in the imperial harem. I just found it funny. "Miss Shi, whatever makes you happy."
I couldn't be bothered to argue with her.
Shi Jin's lips twitched slightly. "I'm going to take care of A Shen."
I didn't say anything, turned around and made a phone call. I was going to miss today's flight and had to rebook.
After making the call, I went back to my ward to get my clothes and left.
There was no one in the outer room of the ward; my clothes and toiletries were in the bathroom.
I went straight to the restroom and pushed open the slightly ajar door.
A man in a hospital gown stood next to the toilet, while a woman in a beige dress had her hands intimately draped over his waist. The man's hand was holding the woman's wrist, and he was looking down.
I immediately stepped out, gently closed the door, and turned to walk towards the ward entrance.
"Ah Shen!"
Shi Jin's shout rang out behind me, accompanied by a loud commotion.
"Qiaoqiao!"
Fu Yanshen's urgent voice came from behind me. I didn't turn around and quickened my pace to leave the ward.
"Qiaoqiao!"
A man in a blue and white striped hospital gown stumbled up behind me and blocked my way.
He leaned against the wall to steady himself, his chest heaving, and beads of sweat appeared on his pale forehead.
His left foot barely touched the ground; his slipper seemed to have slipped off. His foot was swollen, and the gauze on his calf was gradually stained with blood, growing larger and larger...
I glanced at him indifferently from head to toe, my face expressionless, and walked past him, continuing on my way.
I had only taken two steps when Fu Yanshen reached out and grabbed my arm.
"Ah Shen, God! Your leg is bleeding!" A woman's anxious shout rang out in the corridor, her tone clearly revealing her worry and anxiety.
Shi Jin had already reached Fu Yanshen's side. She looked up, her brows furrowed, and she looked distressed.
"Jin...Shi Jin, I'll say it again, I don't need your care." Fu Yanshen's voice was cold, as if carrying a clear sense of estrangement.
As he spoke, his eyes were fixed on me, without glancing at Shi Jin even once.
"Ah—"
Shi Jin was about to speak when Fu Yanshen looked at her, his cold gaze interrupting her.
The woman's gaze shifted to me, and I was looking at her too. She gave a seemingly embarrassed smile.
At this moment, is she thinking about what she said to me before?
"Ah Shen, I'll go back first. Your leg, hurry up—" Before she could finish speaking, she noticed Fu Yanshen's gaze, shut her mouth, and left.
Their steps looked hurried.
Her figure quickly disappeared around the corner.
I started walking again.
Fu Yanshen tightened his grip, and I frowned, looking up at him.
"Are you...jealous?" He looked down at me and asked softly, his tone clearly probing.
The man's deep eyes gleamed with tiny, fragmented light as he stared at me intently.
I scoffed, "Do you think I would?"
As I asked him a question, his eyes gradually dimmed.
