Chapter Twenty: Zhu Jiayu, I'm Not at a Loss

Wei Qinglou turned his head and stared at her for a long while before slowly withdrawing his gaze.

There was no other reason than that Zhu Jiayu's tone was too firm.

This steadfastness manifested in her like spring grass and autumn reeds; though humble and lowly, given the opportunity, they could grow wildly and flourish all over the mountain.

In the past seventeen years, Wei Qinglou had never met anyone like this.

The people around him always seemed indifferent to what they wanted. After all, they were born with a silver spoon in their mouths, so it was destined that they would get whatever they wanted more easily than others. Wealth and luxury, or a carefree life, were all things that were readily available to them.

Before tonight, he had never thought there was anything wrong with that.

But perhaps it was the gentle night breeze, or perhaps it was the dim light of the fire in front of him, he suddenly thought that the past ten years or so had been incredibly boring.

"You said last time that you had something to be upset about, is that also related to what you're going to do?" Wei Qinglou asked, thinking of the drunken night under the moon.

As he spoke, a smile crept into his eyes again: "Life is truly unpredictable. Last time we met, he was dressed in fine clothes, but I never imagined he would be in such a sorry state now."

Upon reflection, Zhu Jiayu had witnessed all of his few moments of dishevelment.

Zhu Jiayu had long since forgotten about Xingyunfang; she was always like that, forgetting unimportant people and matters almost immediately. But she wouldn't forget completely; if someone reminded her, she could easily recall it, thanks to her good memory.

She paused for a moment, then said, "Yes."

Even if someone tries to stop you?

Zhu Jiayu drew the dagger from his waist.

Her past life experiences taught her that no one would always be by her side, and that she needed to always have a weapon at hand to have the courage to fight to the death in times of crisis.

So the day after smashing the decorated tower, she went to the armory in the city and bought this dagger. Suiping City was small, so there were naturally no treasures circulating. Fortunately, although this dagger could not cut through iron like mud, she found it very useful.

By the firelight, she carefully wiped the dagger with a silk handkerchief and said calmly, "If someone obstructs me, I will kill them; if the great path blocks my way, I will not fear death."

"What the heart desires, we will pursue until death."

She spoke casually, but Wei Qinglou could hear the immense sincerity and determination in her seemingly indifferent tone.

"Zhu Jiayu, has anyone ever told you that you're quite strange?" Wei Qinglou wanted to laugh, but couldn't.

Sincerity is never something to be laughed at.

Sometimes, a person's sincerity may make her seem foolish or clumsy, but that is not a reason to laugh.

He didn't know where Zhu Jiayu got the confidence to say such things, but at this moment, he inexplicably believed that she really could do it.

The two had known each other for several days. Wei Qinglou had finally put aside his arrogance as a person from a prestigious family, and Zhu Jiayu had finally let go of some of her prejudices after his righteous act at the city gate yesterday. The atmosphere between the two had eased up somewhat for the first time.

At least it's not as tense as before, with people constantly clashing.

If it had happened before yesterday, and Wei Qinglou had dared to speak like that, Zhu Jiayu would probably have already taken action and personally taught him what the art of speaking is.

But now, she just smiled and said, "No one has ever said that before."

After all, in the past, she was just a pitiful wretch who was devoted to Rong Heng. The nobles and celebrities in Yujing would laugh at her, ridicule her words and deeds, and belittle her feelings, but they would never find her strange.

— Rong Heng was a prodigy, a young man of great talent and ability, and the youngest general in Daye. However, she was just the daughter of a merchant, and at most she was born with a beautiful appearance. However, those who rely on their beauty to please others will eventually lose their beauty and their love. She had no outstanding knowledge or cultivation, and no family to rely on. The only person she could count on was Rong Heng.

It would be strange if she didn't take Rong Heng seriously and her heart wasn't with him.

Wei Qinglou lay back on the green grass, his hands behind his head, gazing at the lonely stars in the sky: "Now we have it."

After he finished speaking, he added, "But I never thought I was boring before. It was only after meeting you that I started to feel that way. Zhu Jiayu, you've got what you deserve."

Changsheng and Lüzheng, who were both perceptive, had already retreated into the woods with two guards to gather branches.

Now, only the two of them were on the empty grass. Seeing that Zhu Jiayu didn't speak, Wei Qinglou asked again, "Aren't you curious about how I got injured?"

Zhu Jiayu turned her head and looked at him seriously: "Are you scared?"

His tone was firm.

Wei Qinglou cursed inwardly, but did not deny it.

He didn't know how Zhu Jiayu figured it out, and he didn't want to ask, but he was indeed very scared.

He was afraid of dying here without knowing why, without even seeing his parents one last time. He was also afraid that he hadn't done many good things while he was alive, and that his death would bring shame upon his family.

He had too many fears, so he wanted to hear what Zhu Jiayu had to say.

When Zhu Jiayu speaks, his tone is mostly even, giving people a sense of reassurance.

He longed for that sense of security that would make him feel less cold.

Zhu Jiayu sighed silently and offered a dry reassurance: "Although you are indeed from a privileged background, don't worry, your injuries are not serious, and your body is not that delicate. You'll be fine."

Wei Qinglou suddenly didn't know what to say.

Fortunately, the night passed quickly. According to Zhu Jiayu's idea, they should set off when it was just getting light, so that they could rest at the inn in the morning, eat and drink their fill, and then continue their journey.
