As she spoke, she stepped out the door, only to see that it was raining. So she turned back inside to get an umbrella before heading out again.
Upon reaching the gate of the mansion, she saw Wei Qinglou standing in the rain. His features were exquisite, his hair black and his robe green. Amidst the apricot blossoms and light rain, his appearance stood out.
As they drew closer, Zhu Jiayu noticed that he wasn't carrying an umbrella. So she quickly walked over, held the oil-paper umbrella high above his head, and said, "Why isn't Lord Wei waiting in the carriage? What if he catches a cold when the rain gets heavier?"
Wei Qinglou turned around and saw her struggling to hold the umbrella. He smiled and took the umbrella from her, then looked somewhat flustered: "You knew everything? I didn't mean to hide it from you—"
He was interrupted halfway through his sentence by Zhu Jiayu: "I know, whether you deliberately hid it from me or not is not important." Her tone was as cold as ever, unchanged despite Wei Qinglou's change in status. "Lord Wei, is there something you need for your sudden visit?"
Wei Qinglou looked down at her waist, which was empty, and suddenly asked, "Why aren't you wearing the jade pendant I gave you?"
“It’s too conspicuous,” Zhu Jiayu replied.
After being questioned by Qiu Lingyan in the carriage, she returned to her courtyard and took off the jade pendant. Given her current status, such a jade pendant seemed rather inappropriate.
Wei Qinglou sighed silently.
If it were before, he would have laughed and cursed long ago. It's just a jade pendant; objects are ultimately inanimate. No matter how precious it is, it can't surpass a person.
But now, he can't say those words anymore.
Having served as an official for several months, he had witnessed too much of the complexities of human relationships and was even more afraid that he might cause trouble for Zhu Jiayu because of his own actions. Therefore, he nodded: "It's better not to bring it."
