Song Jiangmei sat in the carriage, watching the girl in the emerald green dress walk along. Then she suddenly stopped to tidy her clothes and hair, and smoothed the hair behind her ear, as if she had already made up her mind.
She smiled with interest, told the coachman to stop the carriage, got off, and quietly followed the girl. Then, when the girl was about to bump into a well-dressed young man, she suddenly reached out and pulled the young man aside, causing the girl to fall to the ground unexpectedly.
The young master clearly hadn't grasped the situation yet. Song Jiangmei had already withdrawn her hand, smiling as she looked at the girl who had fallen to the ground, and said softly to the young master beside her, "A young master like you, with such outstanding looks and an extraordinary family background, should go out..."
When Song Jiangmei slowly raised her eyes and saw that the person in front of her was actually Wei Qinglou's second brother, she blinked and swallowed the rest of the words she hadn't had time to say.
“Young Master Wei… Second Young Master Wei.”
After Wei Qingwu returned to the capital, he became a minor official in the Ministry of War. Calling him General Wei was no longer appropriate, as it might evoke painful memories. However, calling him Lord Wei was also problematic because Song Jiangmei felt it could be confused with Wei Qinglou. Therefore, she simply referred to him as Second Young Master Wei.
Wei Qingwu nodded, then remembered that she was a good friend of his future sister-in-law, and asked her gently, "Miss Song, what brings you here?"
Song Jiangmei smiled and first had Fuyao help Zhuang Shengxian up from the ground before answering Wei Qingwu's question: "Second Young Master, you may not know this, but this Miss Zhuang in front of you recently tried to ride in the same carriage with your brother under the pretext of forgetting her paper umbrella in the rain. It seems she was rejected, so she changed her mind and set her sights on you."
"Although Miss Zhuang's surname is Zhuang, I can tell that she really wants to be a member of the Wei family. She's even willing to sacrifice her reputation for it. Next time the Second Young Master goes out, it would be best if he brought more servants and guards with him. Otherwise, it would be bad if he were to fall into a trap set by someone with ulterior motives. Don't you think so?"
When Zhuang Shengxian heard that her secret had been exposed and revealed, she finally couldn't stand it anymore. She pushed Fuyao away and ran away like a whirlwind, showing no trace of the weakness and helplessness she had shown when she fell to the ground and couldn't move.
Watching her retreating figure, Song Jiangmei finally couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Wei Qingwu couldn't help but turn his head to look at her.
He had only caught a fleeting glimpse of Miss Song on the pleasure boat, and thought she was no different from the other young ladies from noble families he had met, with the same temperament and methods.
However, he now feels that perhaps that's not the case.
"Does Miss Song have a grudge against that Miss Zhuang from earlier?"
Song Jiangmei glanced at him in surprise, seemingly not understanding why he would ask such a question. But then she thought that this was Zhu Jiayu's future older brother, so in her eyes, Wei Qingwu had become one of her own. She always answered questions from her own people. After a moment of contemplation, she replied, "It's not a grudge. It's just that I don't quite like her way of doing things."
Zhuang Shengxian's desire to climb the social ladder is none of her business, and she has no opinion on it. Everyone has their own way of living. Once you've chosen your path, just keep moving forward. Once you take that step, right and wrong become irrelevant. In the end, life boils down to eight words: "Destiny is in my own hands, and fortune is in my own hands."
Zhuang Shengxian made a thousand mistakes, but the biggest mistake was setting her sights on Wei Qinglou.
Who is Wei Qinglou? He is the person Zhu Jiayu admires.
This alone was enough for Song Jiangmei to despise Zhuang Shengxian.
For Song Jiangmei, if Zhu Jiayu hadn't enlightened her back then, she might still be in Heling dealing with those young men who came from relatively well-off backgrounds but were actually neither good at literature nor martial arts, let alone avenge her father. She might even have been given away as a favor by her stepfather and mother when she reached a certain age.
After all, she is a young lady from the Nie family, and that title carries some weight.
But with Zhu Jiayu's help, she escaped her fate. It was Zhu Jiayu who told her that she didn't have to be a parasitic plant that needed trees to climb upwards; as long as she had the will, she could also brave the wind and rain and grow tall and strong.
Moreover, when she was navigating the social circles of wealthy young men, she didn't use such low-class tricks as Zhuang Shengxian. Not only were they beneath her dignity, but they also made her a laughingstock.
Wei Qingwu chuckled again.
When Song Jiangmei said this, his nose wrinkled slightly, and his expression resembled that of the kitten he had raised when he was a child.
He found the kitten in the haystack, and after keeping it for a while, it disappeared. His father said it went back to find its parents.
Wei Qingwu was depressed for a long time and never kept any pets again. He would occasionally think of that delicate little cat, but he had actually forgotten what the cat looked like, and how its tail sometimes grew longer and sometimes shorter.
But upon seeing Song Jiangmei today, he suddenly felt quite certain that if his kitten grew up, it would be just as adorable as Miss Song beside him.
"Thank you for today, Miss Song." Wei Qingwu said with a smile, and was about to take his leave when, as soon as he turned around, his keen intuition, honed over many years in the army, made him sense the danger that was about to occur. He turned back and saw an arrow piercing the air, heading straight for Song Jiangmei.
At the critical moment, he pushed Song Jiangmei aside and chased after the arrow in the direction it came from.
Song Jiangmei rubbed her temples, and before she could ask what was going on, she saw the arrow that had fallen to the ground, right where she had been standing.
Fuyao was already pale with fright, but she still didn't forget to support her young mistress.
Song Jiangmei closed her eyes briefly: "Go back to the manor and have the people there hurry to Quzhao to find Nie Yundie. If they can't find her, invite my good brother-in-law here."
