The butler hugged her tightly, smiling obsequiously, "My dear aunt, if you've become a faded beauty, then who in this world can still be beautiful?"
Haitang nestled in his arms, and upon hearing this, wrapped her arms around his waist and looked up at him: "Really?"
"Really." The butler said seriously, "Good Begonia, we can talk about it another day. Right now, the master wants you to come over."
"What?" Haitang pushed him away, turned around, and said in a coquettish voice, "I'm not going."
"It turns out it was all wishful thinking on my part. I thought you remembered me, but I never imagined you were still following his orders."
She gave a bitter laugh: "Go away. Go tell him I'm not feeling well."
"Haitang," the butler grasped her hand, "Don't you know what kind of temperament the master has? If he tells you to go, then go, so you won't get yourself into trouble later, right?"
"I think you're just afraid of getting yourself into trouble." As she spoke, the smile disappeared from her charming face, and two lines of clear tears fell from the corners of her eyes. "Back when I was in Dechun Class, I was always waiting for you to come and pick me up. Who could have imagined that you would end up sending me to your master's bed in the blink of an eye? I should have known that I could never have a single bit of sincerity towards someone like you!"
Hearing her say that, the housekeeper couldn't help but sigh.
He and Haitang had long harbored feelings for each other. Later, when the master heard that he had a lover in the Dechun Opera Troupe, he said he wanted to go see his sister-in-law. However, Haitang was beautiful, with a slender waist and a good voice. The master immediately gave him twice as much money as the money to redeem Haitang and took her into his room.
He was afraid of the master's methods, so he naturally dared not have any objections. Instead, he advised Haitang to accept her fate.
The master had four wives, all of whom were first-rate beauties. After taking in Haitang, he was only excited for half a month before quickly getting tired of her and leaving her in Qingyin Garden for a long time without paying any attention to her.
But when he and Haitang broke off their relationship, it was also a time of deep affection. The master's actions, in effect, gave him and Haitang a chance to rekindle their romance.
"I promise you, this is the last few times, okay?"
Haitang turned around, looked at him inquisitively, and wiped away her tears: "What do you mean?"
The butler looked at her again and said nothing more.
He did have a vague suspicion in his heart, but he dared not say it aloud. He had already done his best to speak to her as he had just said.
"You're not comfortable saying, are you?" Haitang nodded. "Okay, since you won't say, I won't ask anymore, but remember what you said."
A vague thought flashed through her mind, but she didn't dare to push him too hard. She reached out and took a moon-white jacket from the golden nanmu inlaid with floral and bird patterns on the silk screen, put it on, and went out the door.
Before leaving, she whispered, "As long as you remember not to let me down, I will never make things difficult for you."
