Chapter 281: Ambush

“Let go!”

Chu Xiaolian struggled hard and she could feel the wound splitting.

Jiang Yi held Chu Xiaolian's hands behind her back, pressed his whole body on her, and blew gently into her ears.

"You son of a bitch." Chu Xiaolian cursed angrily, "You dare to be rude to me? When I recover from my injury, I will beat you to death with one palm."

Jiang Yi did not take Chu Xiaolian's threat seriously. He reached out and gently lifted her hair, leaned close to her ear and whispered, "To die under the peony flowers is to be a romantic ghost. Your master... likes me to do this the most."

Chu Xiaolian was trembling all over and was trying desperately to avoid Jiang Yi's approach.

"Aren't you afraid that my master will find out?"

A gleam of disgust flashed across Jiang Yi's eyes, and his fingers gently stroked Chu Xiaolian's cheek.

"Sure enough, the young skin is different from that old witch's."

Jiang Yi was about to tear Chu Xiaolian's clothes when there was a knock on the door.

Chu Xiaolian was about to shout when Jiang Yi covered her mouth.

"I warn you, don't forget your mission this time. You can't think of someone like Mu Jingrui."

After saying that, Jiang Yi stood up and jumped out of the window.

Chu Xiaolian felt cold all over, and she took a few deep breaths before she could calm her thoughts.

She walked over and opened the door, and the waiter came in with the medicine.

"Girl, this is your medicine. The old man asked me to bring it to you at this hour, so remember to drink it."

After the waiter left, Chu Xiaolian looked at the bowl of warm medicine in front of her, and tears instantly wet her eyes.

It was already late at night when Mu Jingrui returned. He saw that the light was still on in Chu Xiaolian's room. He was sure that she was still in the room, so he did not disturb her and went back to her room.

He lay in bed with his clothes on, and not long after he closed his eyes, he heard light footsteps outside the door.

He immediately picked up his sword and rushed to the window. Through the gap in the window, he saw a group of men in black surrounding his room.

There were many archers lying in ambush on the roof.

Mu Jingrui frowned slightly. His whereabouts have always been secretive, so why are there still assassins chasing him?

Are these people targeting him or Chu Xiaolian next door?

Before Mu Jingrui had time to figure out what was going on, a dozen torches were thrown into the room.

A long whip was swung and Chu Xiaolian rushed out earlier than him.

Mu Jingrui had no choice but to draw his sword and walk into the yard.

He protected Chu Xiaolian while fighting.

"Don't worry about me, just go on your own."

Chu Xiaolian was sinking little by little, because Mu Jingrui's martial arts was much higher than she had imagined.

Seeing that the ambushing killer couldn't do anything to him for the time being, Chu Xiaolian couldn't help but feel extremely conflicted.

A palm wind came, Chu Xiaolian pushed Mu Jingrui away and used her body to block the palm for him.

Mu Jingrui was shocked, and as he caught Chu Xiaolian, he became anxious.

He had no intention of fighting any longer and prepared to escape while holding Chu Xiaolian in his arms.

Chu Xiaolian's injuries seemed to have worsened, and Mu Jingrui was unable to stay to treat her, while the pursuers behind her were relentless.

"There is a branch of the Soul-Snatching Hall nearby. We can hide there."

Chu Xiaolian guided Mu Jingrui to a remote place, and the two of them came to a house in the suburbs.

Mu Jingrui climbed over the wall at Chu Xiaolian's suggestion. Before he could stand firmly, he felt a palm wind coming at him.

At this time, he was holding Chu Xiaolian, and the space he had was limited, so he had no choice but to dodge sideways.

His body hit the wall, as if some mechanism was triggered. Several sharp steel knives came out of the wall and stabbed into his body.

Mu Jingrui endured the pain and pulled out the steel knife, preparing to escape with Chu Xiaolian, but he felt numb all over and collapsed to the ground.

He vaguely saw many people holding torches walking towards him.

"Well done." Jiang Yi led his men over and looked at Mu Jingrui who was lying motionless on the ground, and smiled proudly.

He walked up to Chu Xiaolian and looked at her with sarcasm and contempt.

"Women are indeed the most vicious. Even though Mu Jingrui risked his life to save you, it didn't stop you from betraying him."

As he said that, Jiang Yi kicked Mu Jingrui who had no ability to resist.

"Everyone says you're a young hero, but I think you're nothing special. You can easily pull off these petty tricks. It's really boring."

Jiang Yi looked at Mu Jingrui with contempt. "If it weren't for the instructions from above to keep you alive for the time being, I would have dragged you away to feed the wild dogs. Come, take you away and imprison you in the water dungeon. No one is allowed to approach without my permission."

While Jiang Yi said this, he kept staring at Chu Xiaolian.

Chu Xiaolian looked indifferent. She snorted heavily, turned around and walked towards the backyard.

The weather is gradually getting warmer and the afternoon sun is becoming stronger, which always makes people drowsy.

Shangguan Wanning calculated the days and waited for Mu Jingrui to come back.

"Miss, today is the fifteenth day of the lunar month. Are you still going to the palace?"

After Lutong combed Shangguan Wanning's hair, she picked up the hairpin but hesitated.

According to custom, on the first and fifteenth day of every month, one must go to the palace to pay respects to the Empress Dowager and the Queen.

Since Ling Zhiru was executed, the Shangguan family and the Ling family have had a feud. The Queen Mother also became very cold towards Shangguan Wanning.

In the previous few times, Shangguan Yue had declined to pay his respects on the grounds that Shangguan Wanning was not in good health. However, there were always times when he could not refuse.

Shangguan Wanning thought about it carefully and sighed helplessly.

"Forget it. I can hide for a while, but not forever. I'll just go to the palace today. At worst, I can just stay farther away."

Lu Tong smiled as she selected a hairpin for Shangguan Wan Ning and inserted it into her hair, teasing, "Then I will pray that Master Mu will come back soon."

"I went to the palace to pay my respects. What does it have to do with whether he comes back or not?"

"Of course there is. If the eldest lady gets married, she won't have to go to the palace to pay respects."

Shangguan Wanning's cheeks turned red and she gently pinched Lutong's waist.

"You little bitch, you are becoming more and more unruly."

Lutong dodged with laughter, and the master and servant played around for a while, then asked the butler to prepare the carriage to enter the palace.

Shangguan Wanning deliberately kept a low profile, and the other young ladies from official families, knowing full well that the Empress Dowager disliked her, also tried to avoid her.

She enjoys her leisure time.

But there are people who want to stir up trouble in order to please the Queen Mother and the Empress.

The Queen Mother and the Empress led everyone to enjoy the flowers in the Imperial Garden. The Queen Mother said nonchalantly, "The weather is getting hotter and hotter. I wonder if the lakeside cottage has been tidied up. I see that the flowers on both sides of the lake are blooming brilliantly."

"Mother, I have already asked the Ministry of Internal Affairs to clean up the lakeside cottage. Would you like to go and take a look?"

The Queen Mother hesitated for a moment, then nodded and said, "Okay, take these girls with you to have a rest."

Shangguan Wanning felt helpless.

She really wanted to say goodbye and go back, but she didn't want to attract too much attention, so she could only follow behind silently.
