Chapter 50: The truth of that year

"It's Shangguan Yue."

Mu Jingrui's heart skipped a beat, and immediately sank.

Mu Jingyan looked at his brother's expression changing and guessed what he was worried about.

"You said that Shangguan Yue framed my father. What's your reason?" Mu Jingyan asked.

Tutor Sun sighed softly and lowered his eyes sadly.

"A new emperor appoints new ministers. This is something that every official knows. Therefore, when faced with a fight for the throne, they will be forced to choose a side. If they choose the right side, their prosperity and wealth will continue; if they choose the wrong side, the lucky ones will just be dismissed from office, but the unlucky ones may even have their entire family executed."

"As the prime minister, Shangguan Yue has always been the target of the Crown Prince and the Second Prince's efforts to win him over. He is an old fox who has always refused to express his stance. He seems to be neutral, but in fact he is just waiting for an opportunity."

"It was not until more than a year ago when you came to propose marriage and were rejected by Miss Shangguan that everyone knew that her heart belonged to the Second Prince. Shangguan Yue doted on his daughter and would of course fulfill her wish. Naturally, he had no choice but to stand on the side of the Second Prince."

"At that time, the barbarians on the border attacked, and your father suffered a series of defeats. He was good friends with Shangguan Yue, who knew very well that your father had always been a supporter of making the eldest son the crown prince. That's why he colluded with the Minister of War and bribed your father's subordinates to accuse him of treason."

Seeing the faces of the Mu brothers and sisters becoming increasingly ugly, Master Sun stopped talking, a smile appeared on the corner of his mouth, and asked, "Do you want to continue listening?"

"Go on." Mu Jingrui clenched his hands into fists in his sleeves.

Tutor Sun seemed very pleased to see him trying his best to endure.

"As for your father's death... He did die on the battlefield fighting against the barbarians. No one knows whether he was ambushed or committed suicide because he knew he couldn't escape after returning."

As Mu Jingyan listened, tears quietly rolled down his red eyes.

"How do you know these things?" Mu Jingrui asked.

Tutor Sun stood up and slowly walked in front of Mu Jingrui.

"I was able to sit in the position of Grand Tutor not by luck. I was ordered to investigate this case. If I can't find anything, how can I explain to the emperor? However, after I found out these, I knew that Shangguan Yue stood on the side of the Second Prince. In this case, why should I expose such a powerful ally?"

What Grand Tutor Sun said is reasonable.

But Mu Jingrui couldn't accept that the person who actually framed his father was Shangguan Yue.

If it was really him, then Shangguan Wanning...

"This is just your one-sided statement. Why should I believe you?"

"I didn't ask you to believe me. I told you whatever you asked. I just wanted to protect my son from you. As for the rest...if you want to know more, go check it out yourself."

Mu Jingrui suppressed his anger and walked away, and Mu Jingyan hurriedly followed him out.

The two walked silently on the quiet midnight street, the bright moonlight lengthening their figures.

After walking aimlessly for a long time, Mu Jingyan walked forward and grabbed his brother's sleeve.

"Brother, are you okay?"

Mu Jingrui's thoughts instantly returned to his mind. He looked at his thin sister, forced a smile, and patted her head gently.

"I'm fine, let's go back."

"Brother, where can we go back to? Nowhere is our home."

Mu Jingyan's words completely broke down Mu Jingrui's last psychological defense. He lowered his head, his chest rising and falling.

"Brother, if... the person who framed Dad is really Shangguan Yue, will you kill him and avenge Dad?"

"Yes." Mu Jingrui answered firmly.

"Then...what about Shangguan Wan Ning?"

These words deeply hurt Mu Jingrui's heart.

"Brother, I know you like her very much, and she has helped us a lot these days. But why did she help us? She refused to fulfill the engagement at first, and now she is so nice to you. Don't you think it's suspicious?"

Mu Jingyan's doubts have always been the doubts in Mu Jingrui's heart.

However, he remembered Shangguan Wanning's brilliant smile and clear eyes, and he always felt that... the look in her eyes when she looked at him was sincere.

"Brother, you must stay calm and sober. This might be a conspiracy between the father and daughter. Don't be fooled by them."

Mu Jingrui secretly took a deep breath, he held Mu Jingyan's hand and said, "Xiaoyan, don't worry, no matter what, we must avenge our parents. However, we can't be so arbitrary and conclude that it was Shangguan Yue who did it just based on the one-sided statement of Grand Tutor Sun."

"Be obedient. Give me some time. I will follow this clue and investigate. I promise you, if it turns out that Shangguan Yue is indeed the culprit, even Shangguan Wan Ning... can't stop me from taking revenge. I will definitely kill him with my own hands."

"Um."

Although Mu Jingrui said so, Mu Jingyan's heart was still hanging in the air, feeling a little uncomfortable.

After returning to the Prince's Mansion, the two went back to their rooms to sleep.

Mu Jingyan became depressed. She didn't know how Mu Jingrui would start the investigation. She wanted to ask about the situation several times, but always swallowed the words back.

She was walking alone on the street to relax, and walked into a rouge shop. The owner came up to her enthusiastically and introduced the shop to her.

"Girl, take a look at this jade powder. It's especially suitable for your skin tone. It won't leave any marks on your face, but it can make your skin look more supple. The price is not expensive. How about I pack it for you?"

Mu Jingyan had been practicing martial arts since he was a child and had no interest in these rouge and powder. Just as he was about to turn around and leave, a voice came from the side.

"Shopkeeper, pack it up for this girl, and look for other suitable ones, all of which will be charged to my account."

"Oh, Miss Shangguan, you're here?" The shopkeeper immediately went out to greet her, bowing and saying, "Why did you come here in person? If you need anything, just send someone to say hello, and I'll bring it to you."

Shangguan Wanning nodded and walked lightly to Mu Jingyan.

"Jing Yan, what else do you like?"

Mu Jingyan slammed the box of rouge in his hand on the counter, raised the corner of his mouth, and sneered: "Although our Mu family has fallen on hard times, I can still afford a box of rouge. There is no need for Miss Shangguan to worry about it."

Mu Jingyan's words were unkind, and Shangguan Wanning was a little surprised.

"Jing Yan, you...what's wrong with you?"

"Nothing, I just don't want to have anything to do with your Shangguan family." Mu Jingyan turned around and walked away, then stopped at the door. He turned to look at Shangguan Wanning and said contemptuously, "Since you've cried and refused to marry my brother, everyone knows it. Then please stay away from him in the future, and don't write to him all the time, wanting to see him. You have no shame, but my brother still needs you."
